!!! - Louden Up Now: C/D?

Right now the only thing I can think of while listening to this album is that Mr. Show bit where the performance artist can't crap on the American flag because the color scheme gives him constipation.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"America, you shit on me? Well, I ... shit ... on ... you!"

I like the !!! album a lot, though I listen to the singing like it's just another instrument. I take it the lyrics aren't worth a closer listen?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What lyrics

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One chorus: "like I give a fuck/like I give a shit".

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's their "battle" response to Peaches.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nate i figured this would be right up your alley!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(not a diss, btw)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This record is way funkier, in both the unwashed hippy + makes me dance in my seat ways, than I expected. Which strangely makes me like it very much.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ARE YOU A TRIPSTER?!?!?! OMG WTF LOL

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I'm gonna take it as one, har har

It's weird because I really love "Me and Giuliani and Simon and Whatnot" but the rest of the album feels juvenile in a kind of cloying way. Some of the beats are all right in a poor man's Defunkt sorta way but the voice/lyrics are Trying Too Hard personified -- all the curse-word choruses are spat like they're discovering swears for the first time, and the "in evil I did dwell" chorus of "Dear Can" is the least fitting tribute to the band since the Mooney Suzuki.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wheeew. Close . I'm #'s 5 (though def. not microhouse) and #10. But that's it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoy this more than their previous album. Slightly less... jammy?

Steev (Steev), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

rhythm section - classic (for the most part) rest - dud

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it extremely irritating that the lyrics make it impossible for me to play the album around my kids. I mean profanity is not beyond the pale on its own but when it is this gratuitous and idiotic it's a problem. Saw this band live once and the vocalist was even worse than he is in the studio (where his sub-Mick Jones thing is at least bearable). Rhythm section is damn good though, use of horns not bad.

kdfd, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hello? Is This Thing On" is great.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhythm section? What part of !!! isn't the rhythm section? Besides the singer, of course.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm enjoying it. They can really build and release on their tunes. I think the music holds up v. well (production is bang-on) and there's plenty of good ideas. Some of the non-dancey tracks are great too. "Theme from Space Island" is like Le Voyage Dans La Lune soundtracked by Young Marble Giants!

Michael B, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What don't you like about the horns?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The guitars are good too. I like the dissonance over dance rhythms thing the way they do it

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

when's this out?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

in "Hello? Is This Thing On" at about the 6:00 min mark when he sings "hey! hey! hey!", is it just me, or doesn't he sound like Will Ferrel playing Harry Caray ?

"hey! would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs?"

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant just the bass and drums. The horns/guitars sometimes grate on me. vocals have to go.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the bass and drums. LOVE. the guitar's nice most of the time and i like that the singer is as low in the mix as he is. i think it's great.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

when's this out?
June 8.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone else going to see them and LCD Soundsystem on Thursday in SF?

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a great album. The lyrics are irrelevant (as mentioned upthread) because the groove is 99% of what they're doing (also mentioned upthread). So if the lyrics don't matter, you might as well swear like a goddamned motherfucker.
Titling a song "Shitsheisemerde" is genius.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yah they sound good on this. why do they sound so bad live?

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 29 April 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope they release a completely instrumental version of this.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 30 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Think you guys might be exaggerating a teeny bit?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 30 April 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You hear that falsetto on "Pardon My Freedom"? THAT'S exaggerating.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"do any of you SQUARES know where to get a joint 'round here?"

Elliot (Elliot), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they are playing right now a block from my house but my nose started running. :-(

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

So if the lyrics don't matter, you might as well swear like a goddamned motherfucker.

That's only if you think swearing is inherently cool ("transgressive!"). I'd say if the lyrics don't matter then there's no reason to alienate listeners with them. These are very nice grooves, but I can't play them around my kids, and the only apparent reason is that the singer is a dork.

kdfd, Friday, 30 April 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax, you missed quite a show -- I saw !!! at Bottom of the Hill last summer and wasn't too impressed, but they were on FIRE last night. Nic is more Bez-like than ever (the dancing! the hair! it was 1990 all over again!), and the band was ridiculously tight. Didn't stick around for the entire set (I really went to see LCD, who were as good and as well-received an opening act as any I've ever seen) but the crowd ate it up.

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 30 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

LCD Soundsystem was great (it was too bad they weren't headlining cuz it took the crowd a while to get into it, I think.) !!! was bleh. They sounded like Phish (it felt creepily like a drum circle at a beginning, bad flashbacks of college) meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the lead singer has an unhealthy resemblance to Carrot Top attempting to do a James Brown impression. I left after two songs (haha such a running them with me and shows isn't it?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was unmoved for the first couple songs, and that improvised drumming intro was pretty weak, no argument -- I thought it was interesting that after it was over, Nic said "okay, here's our first song," as though even *he* wasn't that thrilled with it. But by the end of the third or fourth tune they did hit a nice stride (and I'm no major fan).

I actually got the impression that the audience was slower in warming up for !!! than for LCD -- !!!'s first couple tunes drew a pretty lukewarm reaction, which seemed to puzzle the band -- but by the time I left the crowd was just as worked up as they were by the end of "Yeah"...

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nic Offer reminds me of one of the Zoo Animals On Wheels on the "Get A Life" TV Show. Whenever he pogos into the audience with his "Come On, everyone! Dance!!! DAAAANCE!" I expect someone to just punch his lights out.

But I DO like Out Hud and the !!! album.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Monday, 17 May 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a Life really needs to be syndicated. Andrew Todd Keller's Zoo Animals on Wheels was oneof the funniest things ever on TV.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 17 May 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

an evening with phillip glass. just an evening?

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Monday, 17 May 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to Philip Glass today.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it was a Norwegian summer evening, Jim, and last three months.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

So fucking classic!

I love how Nate basically nails why this album is awesome.
