reunions

Listening to the (excellent) Mission of Burma disc and looking forward to this summer's Judas Priest outting, I thought now would be a good time to round up notable reunions. Specifically, it would be helpful for a piece I'm working on to hear what everyone thinks are the best reunion albums, the worst, and then hypothetical reunion albums you'd like to (and could still conceivably) hear, i.e. no Clash, Hendrix Experience, etc.

So, what say ILM?

not to derail this thread but some of these are getting out of hand... is this the music industry's answer to Addams Family/Rocky & Bullwinkle/Scarecrow and Mrs. King cinema revivals?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Velvet Underground's live reunion album - largely crap
Kiss' Psycho Circus - Utter, utter, complete abject crap
Iron Maiden's Brave New World (which reunited the band with Bruce Dickinson after a two album departure) - Better than it should've been.
Bauhaus' live reunion album, Gotham - Needless
Television's eponymous reunion album (`92) - Not terrible, surprisingly.
The Soft Boys' Nextdoorland - Should've been great, but ended up being rather yawnsome

Bands who SHOULD reunite: Devo, Cop Shoot Cop, the Stranglers (with Hugh Cornwell, I mean), the original Modern Lovers

Scarecrow and Mrs. King? Are you fuckin kiddin me? Tell me yr kiddin me.

(all reunions are bad, by the way)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the amc reunion album (out later this summer) is allegedly great according to people who've heard it. but I don't know how notable it is.

part of me wants the pixies to record a new album and another part of me wants them to tour endlessly playing nothing but old songs until they become a tired oldies act.

both Wire reunion albums (The Ideal Copy and Read and Burn) are arguably the highlights of their catalogue.

Devo never really broke up, did they? They play corporate bullshit things every few years.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Reunion records are a pretty far cry from TV reruns. With the exception of the Television reunion, which looks pretty close on paper.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is kinda true. They just played some big thing for Nike in LA (and they're doing again this summer in NYC). But, they did go into a hibernation period (not having a record deal to speak of'll do that to ya, I guess). Supposedly, Jerry doesn't want the band to record again, but the other gents are up for it. Cynical bastard, he.y

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

since most bands are well past their heyday, both commercial and artistic, when they break up, and since most have pretty good reasons for breaking up in the first place, and since lightning never strikes twice, despite what lou christie and ozzy osbourne say, no band should ever reunite ever.

(though i do admit to getting a decent amount of pleasure from seeing the reunited go-betweens. but then again, i got just as much pleasure out of seeing forster and mclennan do back-to-back solo sets, so they could've just kept doing that instead.)

i heard good news on the peter-laughner-less rock from the tombs reunion, anyone go?

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from the singing, that live Velvet Underground reunion album is cool. They were playing really well, no?

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from the singing,

That's a pretty big impediment, though, don't you think? T

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My band is playing a show with the reunited Urge Overkill in a few weeks, but I have heard very bad things about their live show right now.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post: Not if it's "Hey Mr. Rain" or "The Gift!" (Or Cale on "All Tomorrow's Parties" or Maureen.)

Was kind of curious about the Urinals reunion album (with rare early Bee Gees b-side cover version), but not enough to spend fourteen dollars or something.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like the Tombs reunion I saw in New York much at all.

I'm a big fan of the new Burma, Wire,Go Betweens, and Soft Boys discs. Per an earlier thread, I think I'd like to see Gabriel-era Genesis reunite. Blondie's been pretty sucky since reuniting. Missed Radio Birdman.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The only time I saw Urge Overkill live they had a huge black guy(?!) playing bass in a cowboy hat and Luscious Jackson opening. Luscious Jackson was kinda fun (it was right after the In Search of Manny ep, sadly the highpoint of their career) but UO was crap.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Possibly Levi from My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult (who also played for the Jah Wobble-less Damage Manual).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Urge about 10 years ago on the Exit the Dragon tour, they were decent. Unfortunately, they broke up after the next show, apparently Blackie got beat up by one of their roadies, etc. They just played a show here in Detroit a week ago or so, and sucked apparently. I always liked them, but it comes to a point when you realize they've just become a horrible live band.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Would be interesting to hear the results of a Lawrence/Maurice Deebank (re-)pairing. They wouldn't necessarily have to call it Felt either. I know it will never happen, though.

kjoerup, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree, Josh, the Blondie reunion has been great.
Are there any judgements yet to pass on the Pixies reunion? Who has seen them this year?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Pixies, and I think that they'll eventually get bored of this, but for now they seem to be having a good time and playing well. I hope they just tour the hell out of the next year or less, and then go back to their respective projects.

Huck, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Blondie's been fine, live, but their records are about as bad as all the bad records they released when they were around the first time.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

X's reunion with Billy Zoom has produced terrific concerts and no new songs, which is to say no bad new songs.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to see a cocteaus reunion, won't happen, I'm sure.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

X seconded- the show I saw in '93 was great.

I met a girl a few weeks ago who told me Pavement played a one-off show in Portland "at my boyfriend's party". I wasn't sure how to take that. Besides, it's not a reunion w/out Gary Young

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed on the X reunion. I saw them last summer and was blown away (perhaps because I was standing right beside the huge PA speaker).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

X reunion with Billy Zoom was quite good live.

Deep Purple's reunion turned ugly down the line, but the first record 'Perfect Strangers' is pretty good, if you like the band.

Some friends saw the Urge OK tour a few weeks back and said it was fun. They weren't exactly the tightest live band when they were around the first time.

Isn't there one member of Cop Shoot Cop that ripped off a bunch of gear from the rest of the band?

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't there one member of Cop Shoot Cop that ripped off a bunch of gear from the rest of the band?

That depends on who you ask. Phil Puleo and Natz claim that Tod [A] ripped off a sampler from them, whereas Tod maintains that it was compensation for monies owed. In any case, they don't get along at all well (or even acknowledge each other's existence, for the most part) -- so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reunion. Moreover, after "Suck City" (the lyrics of which decrying the entire concept of reunion tours), it'd seem a bit hypocritical. Ain't never gonna happen, basically. Still, it'd be fun to hear "Shine On Elizabeth" or "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose" one more time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was an interview with JF Coleman where I read about that situation.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm highly skeptical of this sort of thing but...a Big Star reunion gig in 1994 is/was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

(All the same, their pending reunion album can't but suck, I imagine.)

I heard great things about those Rocket From The Tombs shows...

M Specktor, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was an interview with JF Coleman where I read about that situation.

Well, technically, it woulda been his instrument (being that Cripple Jim/Phylr/JF Coleman was, indeed, the sampler player in the band), so it'd make sense. Oddly, I think he's the least upset by the dissolution of the band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex and Jody still get together as Big Star every once in a while since the '94 reunion, so the only thing that's different this year is the album.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, big star show a few years back still one of my alltime faves, some crazy german kept shouting 'PLAY BIG BLACK CAR LATER'. still taking a wait and see to any new stuff. go betweens are the only one i can think of who reunited after a significant period of time (i mean hell wasn't raw power a reunion record?) and for me didn't drop off at all with the new stuff.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Raincoats' mid-90s reunion shows were AMAZING. The resulting records, _Extended Play_ and _Looking In The Shadows_, were respectable if not groundbreaking.
