Threnody Ensemble

What do you think of them? I didn't know until very recently when I started checking out the ATP music player because of the new Sonic Youth and found these guys more interesting.

This is what I said about the first two tracks available there:

"Now I've finished listening to the first two Threnody Ensemble tracks. I wasn't familiar with this group before. I like how they use the loose sparse sounds with the chord progressions slowly pieced together. "Tension As Opposed to Tension" has some nice interesting intricate guitar work in it. "ThaRoman pt 1" just came on. I like the thick dense drones. They might actually work better than those in the Sonic Youth. Now the repetitive keyboard hook with the strings fading in and out. This is all quite nice. It sounds like post-rock informed by contemporary composed and improvised music, which comes off pretty well by its standards. The loop sounds increasingly yearning. Now they just broke it to go into a tenser droney section. The ultra-gradual fade-out is handled expertly."

Now I'm listening to "ThaRoman pt II", which is my favourite of the three so far. It has beautiful and intricate interlocking clean guitars with a cello. It's actually a little reminiscent of Fred Frith. I like the meandering feel. It's very absorbing.

Threnody Ensemble features Erik Hoverstein formerly of A Minor Forest in SF, now (I think still) living in San Diego. I liked the little that I've heard from them... but I liked the other A Minor Forest spinoff, Lumen, a little more.

Are A Minor Forest and Lumen similar?

A Minor Forest certainly rocked more... Lumen, or at least the earliest tracks I heard from them, sounded more like the quieter moments of AMF.. the drumming is there but the music is more stripped down (U think Lumen is/was two or three people at most) It was more pleasant overall and had more flow.

Sorry, I was asking if they were similar to Threnody Ensemble. I haven't heard either AMF or Lumen. I've now listened to all the TE tracks. I like them all.

(Oh, maybe that's what you were answering anyway. AMG sez AMF were a noisy melancholy take on math rock. Hmmm...)
