to rococo rot

Looks like to rococo rot does not have it's own proper thread. I heard their new "Hotel Morgen" at a friend's, only once. It seemed more jazzy than past efforts--more vibraphone? Just wondering if anyone's heard the new album, and what the general consensus c/d-wise is about the group. I'm sure they are irrelevant to most. But, "Music is a Hungry Ghost" seemed to have a little something extra to it.

They are okay. I haven't heard any of the stuff with I-Sound and beyond, but the early stuff was decent enough nuevo-Krautrock that never really seemed to go beyond that (for me anyway.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Caught part of them supporting The Pastels last year and enjoyed their warmth, but the new album seems a bit too polite for my tastes. I've only listened to it once, but nothing really stood out. I'd been listening to Fennesz / O'Rourke / Rehberg beforehand, and it appeared utterly tame and unoriginal in comparison.

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd heared they were doing the next Beth Orton album.

Are they still?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? Matt Ward is on it too. If only it wasn't for Beth, it might be a good record... ;o)

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Check their remix of "Carmella", that's why it may well be fine!

Stewart was that @ ICA?

If so....I saw that show, and really dug them. I had one of their records from a couple years back...never did much for me...but live, it was really quite nice.

ddb, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Initial listens to Hotel Morgen have not been memorable. I much prefer The Amateur View. Their contributions to St. Et's Sound of Water almost make that record.

bchan (bchan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like The Amateur View and esp. Music is a Hungry Ghost, and am not as much into their previous releases. So I guess I'm hoping the new one will be in that more recent vein -- is it?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Amateur View - totally classic
Hotel Morgen - dud

Releasing a "jazzy" album should be added to the list of career moves that indicate a creative well gone dry.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the Amateur View's the one then, huh? Funny, one of the only reviews I found of Hotel Morgen compared to rococo rot with Tortoise's new album. Overall, Hotel Morgen does end up sounding more like Veiculo and less like Music is a Hungry Ghost.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The new one sounds like they've been sleeping.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

they have a history of making interesting artists boring-saint etienne, luke sutherland(though maybe mr sutherland had more to do with it than the man from the rot). strangely, though, one of them made meriel barham interesting.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I liked that I-Sound thing I have. I haven't played it in years though. That must mean something.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And I don't think I've heard the stuff before The Amateur View. And I like Kriedler for what its worth.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ddb- yes it was at the ICA. I had heard one of their tracks beforehand, but it didn't really do it for me. I enjoyed their interaction with The Pastels that night as well though. But on record ... nah, I'm not convinced (although I haven't heard The Amateur View).

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So ILM agrees on the new one, then? I loved Amateur View but found Hungry Ghost incredibly unengaging, so I guess I should stay away from the new one.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

most of their releases so far have been brilliant and very relevant to the time they were released.... but abstract/ambient/experimental/idm/whatever has really taken a hit to the belt over the last few years. electronica has in general. it's seems as if a point in time happened where everybody sat back and said, "well damn, everything's been done but harsh noise."

it feels like it hasn't been until the last 6 months that collective comas are starting to wear off. but i think in that same sense, we're gonna see a lot of retread.

electronica is a weird genre to me because, like science, it's is expected to constantly change... compare that to rock or jazz... or folk or classical.

when will the critical crowd take a step back from electronica and let it breathe?

(am i on crack here?)

five years pass...

Anyone heard Speculation? It was recorded on Faust's studio and features Jochen Irmler in one song. Read a favorable review on Resident Advisor but dont trust them completely as they tend to give favorable reviews to everything.

as I already said 6 years ago (sheesh) - I really loved Amateur View when it came out but I'm not sure where TRR would fit in my life right now.

Been listening to Paris 25, She Understands the Dynamics and TRR+D. "Dual Use" on Paris 25 is kind of amazing.

"Lift (Denso)" from Paris 25 is the first TRR I ever heard and it's still my favorite. wish there were more like it.

so, two years later... how is 'Speculation'? AMG review has me interested

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 12 January 2012 09:59 (fourteen years ago)

it's great! i got it a while ago and never listened to it, until today. sonically, i'd say it's pretty much a cross between Veiculo and Amateur View. really good.

Any thoughts on the new album? Norman Records only gives it 4/5 so I'm wondering if it is dreadful.

man the song on the amateur view that bjork sampled on vespertine

Once I realized that this song was almost entirely lifted from Gigi Masin, I was kinda sad how I'd considered this to be TRR's greatest accomplishment.

Only recently realized this was a Move D remix. This tune forever. Was really formative for me.

Their final gig tonight. I confess I had begun to take them for granted.
