His shop is in South Shields. Take the metro to Chichester (yes, really!) and there it is...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've mentioned this before, but Lawrence is convinced a major should (and maybe will...) put it out. He hasn't got a manager at the moment, which is also a problem. I'm sure a major wouldn't sign him.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 29 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Much as I love Lawrence, he really does need to realize that the world has moved on (for the worse). "Majors" as such no longer exist, and what shells remain of them wouldn't and won't go near anything resembling MUSIC. Come on, man. This isn't 1975. EMI is nothing but a logo fast going down the drain and Decca is a hazily remembered bygone. There may be something woefully and madly romantic about pop star dreams in a world in which pop stars no longer exist, but enoughh is enough already!

And while we're at it, whatever happened to Lawrence's plans for his Cherry Red-distributed label, West Midlands or whatever he called it? None of the projected releases ever materialized, aside from the Go Kart Mozart album.

Look, Lawrence, we know how talented you are but I have to admit that I wonder what the hell you do all day. There's no way you're filthy rich, a la Kraftwewrk, living off billion-dollar sampling royalties. Get back to work already! I'll buy your albums.

kjoerup, Thursday, 29 April 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Leave him alone! He's done plenty. You can't rush genius. Its like fine wine you foolz!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. that's what i told him last night. norman, i emailed yr cycle shop link to kathryn!

robotman, Thursday, 29 April 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course while he's hanging around, there's always the Tyde to provide a tenth rate travesty of his work! ;-)

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

sorta like going to "wing wongs imperial bamboo hut" in alton towers after the dragon ride cos your local chinese restaurant is closed for renovation

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

.. and you have, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i LOVE the tyde. no tyde naysayers for me, puhlease! my love of the tyde is well-documented.

DOOMIE X, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah yeah I know, i'm just winding you up. i'd seen some comments elsewhere. I stand by my tortuous chinese restaurant analogy though...

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. its funny because its so WRONG!!!!!!!

doomie x, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and also because he obv. HAS been to "wing wongs imperial bamboo hut" in alton towers after the Dragon ride...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

how would you describe the felt vs tyde dichotomy, restaurant-wise, then?

x post i made "wing wongs" up you fool

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

never been to alton towers mate.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha!

doomie x, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps you see them as two curry houses roughly equal in reputation and stature at equidistant ends of your street, and you're torn between which to visit? one is a trendy new "bombay street food" establishment, and one a hoary but satisfying 1980s throwback with the old favourites of bright red tikkas, poppadums and korma?

or perhaps you'd visit them both in one night, throwing your gut and caution to the wind?

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd go to the 80's throwback one, only to find L.Heyward gorn to the other one...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

cripes, that would explain his rumoured appearance at a tyde show in 2003!

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That wasn't rumoured. I got him down there. I've posted this before, but one more time won't hurt. He was "bewildered" at how much they sounded like Felt. Lawrence claimed to have not listened to any Felt since the 80s so he was having trouble placing which songs had been ripped off. But he was sure most of The Tyde's songs were, uh, 'inspired' by Felt. And they were. He was a bit disorientated by the experience. I don't know what he thought of Once, which he was given that night.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lawrence should sue the Tyde.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh that's funny, poor Lawrence. i saw the tyde and was also bewildered - a song about crystal canyons or something that was just a shameless rip - if martin duffy had had his fingers taped together in the 80s they would have sounded exactly the same!

sorry, i'm being harsh. but this is the "weird felt news" thread.

Dave Amos, Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the only night of the tour the Tyde didn't cover Space Blues. They wouldn't do it when Lawrence was there. And Lawrence dismissed my suggestion he join them on stage for a rendition. But at least he would've known which Felt song they were doing then, I suppose.
