Taking Sides: The Beastie Boys Vs Mansun

"Sabotage" is alright, I admit, but is it on a par with such fine bursts of POP as "Stripper Vicar" and "Wide Open Space"? I think not. I've seen both bands live (without meaning too, mind) and don't own CDs by either, but if memory serves "Attack of the Grey Lantern" aint all that bad and so Mansun win. The Beasties are a bit rubbish really.

I bought that Manson "Take it easy chicken" single, back in the day.

I played the b-side, thinking the A side was called "Take it easy" and the B side was called "Chicken". Thought to myself, "Hmm, they found a sound and are definitely sticking to it..."

Two words: Paul's Boutique.

Beasties win. Thank you and goodnight.

I was seriously underwhelmed by Paul's Boutique...

Do your ears work, man ????c

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. 4

I was seriously underwhelmed by Paul's Boutique...

Considering your own gift for lyrical ingenuity, Mark, I believe it.

Buster (mokey), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you have rhetorical questions with binary oppositions?

Also try: Pavement or Gene???

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm really getting the hang of this taking sides thing.

P.S. So Mansun win, right?

CRW (CRW), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Lateral oppositions are more entertaining, to be honest.

e.g.

Gary Barlow vs Robbie Williams
Thread = yawnfest.

Robbie Williams vs Kiss
mmm, you can see the connection, but in the end, will be predictable.

u2 vs Simple Minds
No-one cares.

Ivor Cutler vs Menswear
now, that one will have much intrigue...

(Not counting your vote as proposer, it seems to be 2-1 to Beasties, with one abstaining)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mansun = one-dimensional indieish pop rock with an occasionally nice burst of energised despair (choruses) but they fall short of Suede i suppose

Beastie Boys = relatively unique force in music combining a broad range of elements into their albums (inc. electro, punk rock, country, 'world music' and latin jazz over the years) whilst following established hip-hop 'code' to the letter most of the time. over classic breaks and hooks adding lyrics and flow that range from the sharp and cogent to the goofy but funny to the downright lame (see recent output) yet getting away with it just about. Had a major influence on college boy lifestyle from music choices to fashion (e.g. the preppy look) appealing to skaters, geeks, stoners, punks and b-boys alike (the most likely fan being a combination of all of those)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so which way you swinging your vote, stevem?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well summed up, Stevemj

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Incase I was unclear and people believed me to be a Gene fan: it's obviously the Beasties.

Stewart Gardiner (Stewart Gardiner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ivor Cutler vs Menswear
now, that one will have much intrigue...

Of course, I could be wrong...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, why would you guys like The Beastie Boys? Don't you think the whole being cool with Dali Lama thing is soooooooo, like, just not cool at all?

CRW (CRW), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

don't hurt yourself wondering

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Considering I'd completely forgotten the existence of Mansun until seeing this thread, I'd have to go with the BB.
