Great Band, No Personality

I never really hated the Stereophonics. Some songs were OK. (noever motivated enough to buy them, and I could quite happily shoot real guns at bluddy "you can have it all in your life and pay for it the rest of your life" r whatever it's called.

But when they got interviewed, particularly on radio, there was no way I could stay listening for any time at all. Mind wanders. Sleeps. Begod. The old Melody Maker gave out a free CD with music and interview, and I had to chuck it out for the wellbeing of other road users...

So, who would you consider a great band? without any noticeable personality offstage/offmusic?

It's somewhat amazing that Coldplay have gotten as big as they have despite being such boring people.

Replace "despite" with "because of."

Television †

Any indie band since 1995, really. Even The Darkness seem to be more like estate agents than rock stars. Obviously not every indie band since 1995 is 'great' though.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 29 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do you say Television? I've never read interviews with them or anything, but their lyrics are full of character!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 29 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Verlaine's lyrics may have character (and yes, they do), but as personalities go, the band just aren't very dynamic in that capacity (I mean, Guns'n'Roses they're not!)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Television *had* personalities. It's just unfortunate that their personalities (OK, Tom Verlaine's really) was that of "Asshole".

Blur.

No Graham, speaking in a uniquely Colchester accent and fidgeting heaps doesn't automatically make you interesting. No Alex, your looks don't qualify you as Mr Fun-to-Be-With 1994-2003. No Damon, I don't care how hard you've worked to cultivate a north London accent, you do not ooze sophistication.

A little perspective/counterpoint. Think of all the terrific, larger-than-life-folks (you probably know a couple) who wanna wanna wanna be great artists but have never produced anything with a whit of personality.

So how much does the question matter, either way?

I think Queens of the Stone Age had piles of personality....or at least until they sacked Nick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the guy with the personality in Television got kicked out (i.e. Richard Hell).

The Pretty Things seem to fit. The camera lense was not kind to them (Or, were they not kind to the camera lense) and they were not very charismatic in a make-the-headlines-kind-of-way, but they made music as good as Beatles, Stones, Small Faces, Love, Zombies, etc.
