has anyone ever said this to you regarding your liking of a certain music? annoying, isn't it?

what musics have you been encouraged to "grow out of"?

COnversely, my mum&dad were convinced I'd grow 'into' folk.

oh was this phrase thrown at me through my teenage years. now with wife/kids/mortgage etc they still say it ..
go figure... parents. suspect i shall use the phrase in next 2 years and curse the parental cycle where you find your parental phrases being regurgitated against your will ..

Punk. Funnily enough, I did.

(said to me the other day re:hip-hop. i'm still irritated now.)

how do you respond to this? you can say "No, i won't grow out of it!" but then you're admitting that your tastes are somehow childish. or you can say "there's nothing childish about liking X anyway" and be met with another smug "I once thought the same thing, but then i matured!" response. ugh.

you can say "No, i won't i won't i won't grow out of it! I won't!"

Goth. I grew out of that, too.

there's a difference between moving on to something else and "growing out" of a certain music, though. there's stuff i listened to when i was younger that i don't know, but it's not because i realised it was silly and juvenile, or that i can see the flaws much better now that i'm older. kate - did you "grow out" of those types of music,or did you just get a bit tired of them?

i suppose there were bands i was obsessed with as a teen that i stopped worshipping when i got a bit older - the Manics, for instance. I didn't "grow out" of liking the manics though,i still think they made some great records.i grew out of being obsessed with them (ie. being strongly attached to individual bands is more common among younger foax, although it's not uncommon among grown adults)

My dad said this a lot. Funny since he's still stuck in his Northern Soul obsession.

Anyone who did not grow out of a heavy metal phase causes me great concern.

Electro, by all six of my "rockist" housemates who hated the stuff.

Pour shame all over us
Harden into a crust
- - - cement - - -
Forget the glamour and
Mumble a jackhammer
- - - under your breath - - -
Hide your face in the curtains
Better unsaid, so close
And it rolls off the tongue
ALMOST
The world expects the pose
Perfectly natural
- - - loosen up - - -
Smearing wet concrete
And swearing you'll never be
- - - caught - - -
At your weakest, etched in stone
And we're frozen here, peeking
ALMOST
sweet talk
CAFFEINE
Make contact
Up to my neck
I confess in quicksand
"But it's so easy for you"
"There's always one thing"
"Do you have something to tell me?"
"Say something"
"Anything"
I'm warning you
I'm warning you
I'm fucking you
I'm warning you
"Relax"
"It's just a phase"
"You'll grow out of it"
Believe anything anyone ever tells you
It's not funny anymore
It's thing you hate the most
The thing you hate the most
The thing you hate ALMOST

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother keeps saying that she used to like Phil Glass, but grew out of it. Now she doesn't have any patience for it. She keeps telling me I'll grow out of any minimalistic music. But I think the opposite will occur.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was worried when I started having a taste for alt-country and folky singer-songwriter stuff that I was growing up and/or out of edgier tastes. Turns out it was just a phase; right now all I want to listen to is psych-rock and hip-hop.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

For me it was odd. I started out really young liking smooth jazz, really soft folk music, showtunes and classical music. Then I grew into punk, glam rock and hip hop.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I eventually grow out of (and later, back into) every style of music.
