since i posted the above i've been thinking about why i like YYN so much. a lot of their music sounds like generic 80s indie today, but the lyrics had a wit & intelligence that is sorely lacking in most bands.

'he was attracted to the clumsy left,
blind faith, badges, che guevara posters,
"i am an enemy of the state"'
-tommy opposite

that phrase 'clumsy left' sums up student politics so well, kids with middle class accents trying to sell you copies of 'living marxism', che t-shirt under their army surplus jacket.
oh, i've just remembered 'married miss new jersey', thats probably my favourite song.
