AESOP ROCK!!

My conspicuous consumption last night was accompanied by the latest Aesop Rock album. Hot damn, it sounded GOOD. You know, that literate, skillful hip-hop stuff. Didn't buy the album (because, you know, I needed _Cut_ and _The Modern Dance_), but, hey, let's discuss him anyway.

C'mon, I was looking forward to a new genre setting fables to electric guitar. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ned, stop blemishing my threads with your "rock" silliness, you dastardly cad, you.

David Raposa, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

er, 'scuse my ignorance but what is Aesop Rock's steelo?

Ruby D, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Question is... does he continue the Def Jux legacy, currently spearheaded by the trailblazing CANNIBAL OX?

Honda, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This album is fantastic; my roommate got it a few weeks ago, and I've listened to pretty much the whole thing. He manages to be literate without seeming to try too hard; his verbosity is like a fantastic puzzle to piece together rather than an empty signifier of "intelligence." Also, he lacks the preachy annoyingness of a lot of underground MCs, instead spouting fucked-up streams-of- consciousness peppered with moments mind-boggling wordplay. He's very inspiring in that he makes me want to write rhymes myself. Plus, his production is very unique and good-sounding (acres beyond his earlier EPs).

All of my friends make fun of me because I have a crush on Aesop Rock. I pretend I'm not home when they call.

Dana Green, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ace Rock is better than Cannibal Ox in that he actually has personality and appeal beyond incredible rhymes. I like him a lot... he has a melancholy tone to some of his stuff which sets him apart from a lot of MCs... and it's nice to hear something other than battle rhymes from someone from the underground.

AES Rock... is an inspiration to me, he helps me paint a picture in my head of what he means, in most cases i interperate his lyrical ballads into my own meaning, of what i'm going thru at the time. his skill is beyond many MC's, and his rhyme scheme is complex like alien technology, it makes me want to write personal poetry. i start small by recording a few tracks with my friend sean from around the way. if u would like to hear, go to my website: "www.droppedasachild.com"

He's on the radio right now. I'm guessing this song is called "None Shall Pass". It is fantastic.

nickalicious, Monday, 17 September 2007 21:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Yep. I've not paid super-close attention to his career or anything, but "None Shall Pass" is the first thing of his that's made me perk up since "Daylight."

The new album is really good.

Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, I might be hallucinating, but is John Darnielle never actually singing on "Coffee"? Maybe it's because I grabbed it from emusic, but it really sounds like the lyrics sung by... someone who is not John. But reviews mention him being on it, so I'm wondering if it changed after the promo.

mh, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmm, I'm not sure. I have the actual album and it is most definitely John D. on there.

Um, nevermind, bad headphones setup issue.

mh, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i was half-hoping that he was going to rap instead of sing when i saw his name on there

ciderpress, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I was one hundred percent hoping.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:01 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah that's exactly what I need, to get clowned on by a bunch of internet dudes 4 rapping

no thanks

You would rather be krumped on, I see.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah this album is pretty tight, the hook to Catacomb Kids gets me every time.

thingsfallapart, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Yep, Aesop's best for sure. It's all about track 6 (I don't have the titles in front of me)

Also, big up to Def Jux for making their promobot SO annoying it makes me go out and actually buy the albums. Even though it might give critics a headache, it's the only surefire anti-piracy strategy I've seen.

ok the fact that any of you compare aesop to ghostface, shows your ear for music (poor). Aesop is a truly great rapper and performer, whearas ghostface has semi good beats with bad lyrics. i mean if you were listening to aesop from the appleseed days, i respect you, but people need to stop talking shit when they have no clue what there talking about...

billstevejim, Monday, 21 January 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link

there needs to be entry into the political arena. the hardcore realist is limited to action, doesn't waste time rapping. the entry should be written and said except aesop doesn't convey well the real issue might be the unification of the poles of the mind aesop is from the left we need moderation. at least he seems to work in revision. but his whole mindstate necessitates it. at least he's not a farce like his demographic. does he get realer by the year or is he a mediocre poet.
