music as a memory tool

oftentimes i find myself thinking about a year (mostly the 90's) and have no idea what i was doing during that time. (too much pot)

so to spark my memory, i find out what albums were released that year and it puts everything into perspective. i can then remember buying that record and all the other details of my life at the time.

has anyone else found themselves doing this?

i don't have to find out, i just remember. that is my curse. i am not allowed to forget.

i used to study for school with the radio blaring and i would sing the songs in my head and remember what i had studied.

Yep. The second I bang on an old record, the memories come flooding back. Recently I found some old various artist albums from the late '80s, that set off a chain reaction of remembering stuff.

This totally works with my old Phish bootlegs. Then again, that's about the only positive aspect of my old Phish bootlegs.

P.S. Mike Gordon likes touching little girls

P.P.S. Scissor Sisters are the new Erasure

i remember listening to maxinequaye a lot when i was on a school trip in greece, especially on long bus journeys. then when i came back, the first time i played it, i could suddenly remember a lot of sights i'd seen from the bus while listening, which had otherwise slipped out of my head. that was the strongest example, but it happens all the time, with lots of records. certain albums are very much entwined with periods of my life, and i often wouldn't realise this until i put them on and i'm suddenly overwhelmed with unlocked memories.
