Never listened to them at the time but I know they were one of those Reynolds bands yadda yadda yadda... so I've just got hold of 'Hope Against Hope' and it is very good.

What else of theirs is good and what isn't?

Venga, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Seek out The Word and the Flesh, Veil and Here Comes Success, all of which are quite grand. There's a cover of Wire's "Ahead" that they do which is also worth the finding.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I remember reading a good review of them and going to see them at the Beat in Port Chester... but after getting stoned and having a few drinks, I had to go lie down in my car where I fell asleep, missing the show.

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The first EP/_Hope Against Hope_ are the ones everybody seems to like, but I'm pretty fond of _Here Comes Success_. Especially "Pardon My French," which has the best Stones riff the Stones never thought of (mostly because it takes three or four guitars to play correctly-- you'll understand what I mean when you hear it).

Douglas, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That Wire cover is indeed splendid, Ned. Thanks.

Venga, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Does any of it get better than the Wired for Sound 2-CD set?

sundar subramanian, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Love Agenda from 1989 is their best album by far. Very of it's time but that's good given it was the last glory period of guitar rock.

David Gunnip, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like pretty much everything they've done, with a slight preference for the first and third line ups. It's a real pity they've split up; the one gig of theirs I saw was outrageously good.

RickyT, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ok, I know I saw them (or attempted to) when they were touring for "Love Agenda"... 1989??? Goddamn, say it ain't so.

Sean, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually, the chief Susan herself, I just now remembered, played bass for Nick Cave's semi-solo tour back in March. And she did a fine job too.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And she plays occasionally in a group called Big Bottom nowadays. All bassists.

James Kyllo, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

lead susan (= stenger) also played bass on solo siouxie tour some years gone: as is personal friend — tho actually i haven't seen her since i think the masonna gig — i shd probably not remark that she = MOST HANDSOME WOMAN ON THE PLANET

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Susan Stenger played flute w/Sonic Youth at the RFH recently. Think she also plays flute on some of Niblock's tunes.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

they had interesting moments but were ultimately boring, do to lack of hooks, etc., somewhat like Live Skull say. I imagine they might have been a good live band, but I never saw them

g, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lack of tunes? Are you kidding? All their albums had at least two songs on which they basically tried to write pop songs, and they worked brilliantly. The noise assault seemed to overpower the song eventually, but the harmonic overload didn't push the melody out. Check out "Now is now" or "Torniquet". Best place to start is the "Wired for sound" double CD, then get all the CDs if you can (I never found a copy of "Veil" though), but I have to say that "Here comes success" was by far their worst album, a fine album to fall asleep to (which is all I ever did to it).

I was gonna do a thread abt band of susans until i thought of searching first.

I got the 'word and the flesh' alb? Released before loveless, I wonder if K.Shields just blatantly ripped it off.

After hearing the record again this morning I must declare that it is one of the best rock albums I've heard in the 1990s (or any toher decade). Those riffs burn, man. the lyrics are a wonderful 'this means nothing' and are sung beautifully in morose kinda style. Ends really well with a cover of Chatham's guitar trio.

Despite the cover similarities the only other thing in common with MBV is their greatness. You can't compare the sound as band of susans had this minimal guitar sound riffage. It's an all new brand of rawk riffage.

Susan Stenger is indeed lovely looking, which is nice.

Have to find the compilation wired for sound. Has anybody got any thoughts on the Peel sessions disk?

Can i have an answer tomy question please!

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I haven't heard the Peel Session disc -- as for Shields listening in, both albums were recorded around the same time (Loveless a touch earlier, I think), though it's likely both bands were aware of each other.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think I read loveless was released Nov. 91 whereas Band of susans was released earlier that year but yeah both must have started recording at the same time w/ band of susans recording theirs quicker (I'm sure). Listening to 'word and the flesh' it's quite remarkable how they were ignored (maybe it's because the records are difficult to find though i'm not sure: it's only here in canada that I saw some of these, never having seen them in britain).

I love the guitar sound, how the guitars just dissolve into each other, very beautiful.

Do you know if wired for sound is still available?

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Regarding the Peel sessions EP, it's worth owning for the superior and longer version of "Hope against hope" on it, and their rather cute attempt at Wire's "Too late", but the other tracks offer nothing new or different.

Rob M, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

thanks rob.

I think it's time for a revival. Sadly, all I still own is Wired for Sound.

One of those bands that keep on surprising me. I just realized after god only knows how long that 1. they've quietly become the most-played band on my iPod and 2. "Throne of Blood" from the Peel Sessions is fantastic...almost as good as the Peel "Hope Against Hope," which is indeed (as noted above) better than the album version(s).

Still convinced that "Here Comes Success" is their best album by a long shot, but who knows what the future may bring.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Kind of neat REM cover too (1,000,000). Not as good as the Wire cover, but worth hearing.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:06 (seventeen years ago) link

is "dud" allowed here?

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Sunday, 4 February 2007 04:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but given that I thought "dud" for over a decade and then changed my mind it might be worth reconsidering...I really had to get over comparing them to other bands before they started to make sense. Also volume and/or headphones (poor ears) seem to be critical, and picking up Die Donnergotter didn't hurt.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 4 February 2007 04:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I hear ya... will re-ev... thx. Saw them a few times back whenever ('88-89) and found them to be sub-Branca/Swell Maps reinterpreters (i.e. not as good as Sonic Youth were back then) but I will check them out again. It's been a good 15 years since I even heard the name. What is the S/D on them exactly?

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Sunday, 4 February 2007 05:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Stenger and Poss were in London recently playing compositions by Phil Niblock. Anyone go?

An exhibition of Niblock's films will be shown till early March.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Sunday, 4 February 2007 13:16 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost. I don't think there's huge agreement on the S/D, though pretty much everyone who likes them is probably going to like "Hope Against Hope." I tend to agree w/Ned and Douglas who posted early on.

R. Poss goes on at length about not being influenced by Branca, and my appreciation of the band definitely went up when I ditched the Sonic Youth comparisons: they're really doing very different things.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Sunday, 4 February 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago) link

"Love Agenda" is a great, overlooked record. esp. song "It's Locked Away" which is ridiculously catchy. Rather like Wire's "Map Ref." it's too perfect pop to actually be a hit.

Hmmm, bunch of their stuff now on Spotify (hadn't noticed that before). Including bonus tracks (radio edits) on Here Comes Success, and I can't figure out where they came from...

This popped up on Robert Poss' FB feed today:

"I have just received the digitalized version of part of my cassette archive, transferred by Jeff Keibel. (Thanks, Jeff !)
This includes live stuff, my original Band Of Susans demos and alternate mixes, basic tracks, and other ephemera.
Much to be gone through, and some pitch/speed adjustments to be made for sure."

He's thrown a couple of things up on Soundcloud already.

Had the vaguest of awareness of this band back in the 90s but apparently I’ve never heard them until now. Liking what I’m hearing so far.

Does anyone know, are the versions of “Hope Against Hope” and “You Were an Optimist” that appear on the debut album the same versions that we’re on the Blessing and Curse EP?

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link

AFAIK the version of “Hope Against Hope” on the first album was (just) a different mix but the version of “You Were an Optimist” was a brand new recording for HAH

Master of Treacle, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 17:24 (three years ago) link

They are identical as far as I can tell.

everything, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:28 (three years ago) link

The Peel Session version of Hope Against Hope is the best one.

everything, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

Unmentioned on this thread (and my only context for them) is that they were "the first band on the Internet," or at least positioned themselves that way -- I remember they were active on one of the pre-WWW online services in the early '90s.

babe for the weekend (morrisp), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:36 (three years ago) link

Just looking at the album notes and it says that the album was recorded at Platinum Island, NY except Hope Against Hope which was remixed there. The EP was recorded at Caliope Productions. So perhaps Master of Treacle is correct. They sound the same though.

everything, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

xpost Might be a running tie between them and Poster Children, and I'm sure there are others.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:45 (three years ago) link

I think Master of Treacle is correct - the EP version of You Were An Optimist is 15 seconds longer than the album version, but Hope Against Hope is about the same length on both releases.

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:28 (three years ago) link

I remember I met Page Hamilton as a member of them before he went solo. Or formed a new band like.
They were on the Blast First package I first hitched following. Alongside Rapeman and Dinosaur Jr.
Have meant to pick up the 2cd anthology for ages. Had the lp with Hope Against Hope at the time.
Did love the bits where the only dynamic instrument was the drums cos everything else was laying down layers of drone.

Been revisiting these albums recently, I was always a little lukewarm on them but everything is sounding great to me now, esp the last string of records from The Word and the Flesh on are all kind of a miracle

Should say at this point that years back Robert Poss and I became FB friends — he’s got a good presence on there, one of many musicians from the very broad time and place still engaged with things as they are while sharing tons of interesting memories and clips and things.
