mmm. if memory serves, it'll be about 16, but we're playing a few other shows along the way and house hunting while in tennessee, so should be really fun

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

better "late" than "ashcroft"

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

good one. But I regret never actually having seen Ashcroft play. I loved the concept. Pro-administration hardcore. Genius! I mean it.

Wot a lovable nutjob.

Alright, now that sobriety and wakefulness have set in, here's a more thorough rundown.

The most wonderful surprises were The Skaters, Isle of Citadel and Spires That In The Sunset Rise, none of whom I'd heard before and all of whom ruled. The Skaters rocked the noisy tape loops/hand drums/craziness. I must be out of the noise loop or something for having missed out--WHERE IS THE HYPE? Really interesting gritty noise over crazy rhythms. Isle of Citadel are a vaguely Sonic Youthy drone/rock band. Their drummer really held it all together, and reminded me a lot of the Intima's drummer with lots of solid changes. Spires = discordant psych with crazy crazy vocals. Bizarre howls and chants over clattering with the occasionally really sweet lead melody.

Non-surprising highlights = Jack Rose, Black Forest/Black Sea, the Blithe Sons, Wooden Wand, Pelt and Born Heller. The Blithe Sons in particular deserve credit for playing in a culvert that ran from a dried-up stream/ditch underneath the road. I was particularly drunk during their set, so maybe the beauty was magnified, but chimes and acoustic guitars and candles in a corrugated metal tube seems like a winning combination to me. I kept falling asleep during Pelt's set (late Saturday night) but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Mr. Adultery, I also must let you know, that the second tune you guys did at Pasture (with Jessica singing) blew my head way open.

The atmosphere at the fest was consistently amazing. All the folks who lived there were incredibly nice and accomodating, and the grandmother knows how to cook a wide variety of delicious pasta dishes. Similarly, the complimentary oatmeal was just what was needed to fill the belly before a day of drinking/tripping. The bullfrogs were amazing; the bonfires were amazing. The dampness and rain weren't quite so amazing, BUT the rain did incite a mad dash to the Son of Earth tent. Once at said tent, various bottles of bourbon were broken out along with a box of wine. I'm actually kind of impressed with myself that I didn't need to wander into the woods to vomit in private.

Hilarity: the event was sponsored by Red Bull!
