All tribute albums are crappy, because most covers are crappy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hm... I dunno that I'd call If I Were a Carpenter a crappy tribute album at all. Barring a few exceptional songs, I actually think it's quite a good tribute album

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost)
Was that Carpenters tribute really THAT bad? (I haven't heard it all).
This is further evidence to the theory that Matthew Sweet was indeed on every indie rock compilation released in the '90's.
Kiss tribute to thread.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the idea of that wilner mingus one. mingus tunes played on harry partch's instruments with vocalists as diverse as chuck d and diamanda galas doing extracts from beneath the underdog.

i don't listen to it much though.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That Carpenters comp is actually pretty good. There are a lot of really bad tribute albums, but that is not one of them. Redd Kross' tune and Superstar in particular are both really fun.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty good for a tribute album or good for an album? (I'll only accept the former.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cracker song is nice. I have it on tape somewhere. It's not really that bad, I guess, but it does include Dishwalla, Sheryl Crow, Four Non Blondes, AND the Cranberries.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Here it is :
1. Deuce - Lenny Kravitz
2. Hard Luck Woman - Garth Brooks
3. She - Anthrax
4. Christine Sixteen - Gin Blossoms
5. Rock & Roll All Night - Toad the Wet Sprocket
6. Calling Dr. Love
7. Goin' Blind - Dinosaur Jr.
8. Strutter - Extreme
9. Plaster Caster - The Lemonheads
10. Detroit Rock City - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
11. Black Diamond - Yoshiki

Wow, it's a compilation of artist that were 3-4 years past their prime (1994). And the Gin Blossoms, who were not welcome at any time.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

These bands had primes?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that Carpenters tribute CD.

"Pretty good for a tribute album or good for an album? (I'll only accept the former.) "

uh, good for a tribute album. I wouldn't bother listening to it all the way through.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

That late 80s/early 90s Neil Young tribute would have been pretty good if Yo La Tengo's "Barstool Blues" would have been included (recorded around then I think).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

These bands had primes?
You're right Alex, I should have written "peaks".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

love the nikki sudden cover of "captain kennedy" on it.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

4. Imagine performed by Blues Traveler - 3:45
I am wincing right now. I can only imagine the reaction of people who actually like the song.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wilner Kurt Weill tribute album from the mid-'80s (Lost in the Stars) is really good.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

does that have sting doing mack the knife?

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah! It's good!

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

wilner does seem a wee bit more ambitious than the others mentioned here for these projects

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Carpenters one handily comes as a box of 7"s, so you don't have to listen to the songs you don't like (though I agree with the defenders here, so am possibly dumb for getting it)

I also really like most of this:

2. Fly On A Windshield - God Lives Underwater
3. Enjoy the Silence - Failure
4. World in My Eyes - The Cure
5. Policy of Truth - Dishwalla

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite, even though this is a crappy tribute thread, is the Troggs tribute "Groin Thunder" from the early 90's (Mummies, Headcoats). C'mon, it's "Groin Thunder"! The Ernest Brookings "Tribute" w/ Yo La Tengo is up for debate. I'm a little too straped for time to AMG-it at the moment.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sub Pop Kinks tribute was pretty sub par, though the one that came out around the same time with Davies' liner notes was surprisingly good.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 13 May 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

1.   My Generation - Gorky Park
2.   Holidays In The Sun - Skid Row
3.   I Can't Explain - Scorpions
4.   Purple Haze - Ozzy Osbourne
5.   Teaser - Motley Crue
6.   The Boys Are Back In Town - Bon Jovi
7.   Move Over - Cinderella
8.   Moby Dick - Tico Torres, Jason Bonham, Mickey Curry
9.   Hound Dog live - Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Klaus Meine
10.   Long Tall Sally/Blue Suede Shoes live - Scorpions, Gorky Park
11.   Rock And Roll live - Skid Row, Motley Crue, Zakk Wylde, Jason Bonham

Phew, there was some suck on this tribute album. Those live cuts especially.

CLEOPATRA RECORDS TO THREAD!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There has NEVER been a good tribute album EVER and there never will be. FACT!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like AMC's rendition of 'Goodbye to Love' a lot, but then I'm also an unrepentant fan of both AMC and the Carpenters. I should probably get the whole album.

I also love the Pumpkin's cover of 'Never Let me Down Again'; it's what I'd play someone to convince them of the Pumpkin's worthiness.

The only tribute I've got:
1. Shoot Out the Lights performed by X
2. Wall of Death performed by REM
3. When the Spell Is Broken performed by Bonnie Raitt
4. Turning of the Tide performed by Bob Mould
5. For Shame of Doing Wrong performed by Syd Straw / Evan Dando
6. Down Where the Drunkards Roll performed by Los Lobos
7. Beat the Retreat performed by June Tabor
8. Genesis Hall performed by June Tabor
9. I Misunderstood performed by Dinosaur Jr.
10. The Madness of Love performed by Graham Parker
11. Just the Motion performed by David Byrne
12. Valerie performed by Beausoleil
13. A Heart Needs a Home performed by Shawn Colvin / Wainwright, Loudon III
14. Dimming of the Day performed by Five Blind Boys of Alabama
15. Farewell, Farewell performed by Maddy Prior / Martin Carthy
16. The Great Valerio performed by Maddy Prior / Martin Carthy

They only standouts are the Maddy Prior and June Tabor numbers, as not anyone can pull off a Thompson song; REM sure can't. Putting 'Wall of Death' second on the album is a mistake too, as is Beausoleil's french polka-fest. Most of the other songs are passable.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I know the last one there. The placebo one was played on the radio, and I said "What are they doing to that poor song?"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

IIRC it came out about the time when Bis were NME readers' preimer whipping boys'n'girl, so the sacrilege was felt particularly strongly by the easily offended. I've never heard it myself but I suspect it was more heartfelt than Anal Cunt and The Meatmen's takes

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the "From Russia With Love" Pigface tribute album featuring, as you might expect, some Russian unknowns covering Pigface (although they are all pretty much coverable songs if you know what I mean, there's none of the really self-indulgent stuff on it) after Invisible/Underground threw it in with an order.

I AM SCARED TO LISTEN TO IT.

String tribute albums to something are the best/worst.

I read that as "Sting tribute albums to something" which would probably be the actual worst, should such a thing come to pass

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A string tribute album to Sting would be the nadir of music, surely?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The only track on that whole Tom Waits tribute album I could stand was the Tim Buckley one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Violent Femmes doing "Step Right Up" really did make me feel physically ill, and I like that band.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, I'm afraid tribute albums *do* get worse than that:

http://www.nme.com/news/107824.htm

( THE SMITHS are the subject of an unlikely tribute from the heroes of emo and post-hardcore.)

I have heard this. It is the worst album ever made and everyone involved should die slow and painful deaths - perhaps by being made to listen to Hundred Reason's 'How Soon Is Now?' over and over until the internal organs haemorrage
.

Mog, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the heroes of emo and post-hardcore

Not even for one day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Seems the Smiths have got a lot of unlikely fans"

FFS

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's certainly the worst album ever made, but the Hundred Reasons massacre isn't the worst thing on it, piss poor though it is. 'Death Of A Disco Dancer' by Your Code Name Is Milo (currently the worst band in the world) is beyond comment.
That 'tribute' to Skip Spence's 'Oar' a few years back was pretty good in parts, and not always by the people you might expect.

Snotty Moore, Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the neil young tribue was half-good. this was one was three-quarters-good, which i'm reasonably sure makes it the best tribute album ever.

_I Sometimes Wish I Was Famous: A Swedish Tribute To Depeche Mode_ is fantastic. How can you go wrong with a Cat Rapes Dog cover of "Something To Do"?

Heh. It is indeed a great/weird album!

That Rubayait thing Elektra put out for their 40th anniversary (someone posted it upthread) is mostly crap save for a few songs. No where near enough interesting or good stuff to balance out two whole discs.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Staplegun Records "Surprise Your Pig" Tribute to REM:

Just Say No - Radio Free Europe
Band of Susans - 1,000,000
Gumball - Stumble
Steelpole Bathtub - We Walk
Sampson And The Philistines - Talk About The Passion
Jawbreaker - Pretty Persuasion
J Church - RockvilleLyrics; Tab; Bass tab
Phleg Camp - Feeling Gravity's Pull
Mr T. Experience - Can't Get There From Here
Flor de Mal - Good Advice
The Punchline - Bandwagon
When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water - I Believe
Vic Chestnutt - It's The End Of The World As We Known It (And I Feel Fine)
King Missile - Get Up
Tesco Vee's Hate Police - Losing My Religion
Jawbox - Low
Mitch Easter - Shiny Happy People

It's kinda weird, but I actually like most of that record. King Missle's "Get Up" is genius.
