The Politics of You Are The Quarry

Been listening to it all day - in the car during a storm, at work, and right now at home. How I feel about it isn't the point of this thread, though since I haven't weighed in on any of those intimidatingly long threads yet, I will say that I think three songs are fantastic - among his best - and the rest are merely pretty good. There's a listless, droning quality about some of it that I don't like. Oh well, anyway, I'll make it over to those other threads one of these days and go into more detail...

anyway, what's up with Morrissey being all Green Party and 'conscious' all of a sudden? Isn't this the same Steven Patrick "rap-is-vile" Morrissey, author of Asian Rut, that was once accused of having right wing sympathies?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's not writing songs about The National Front anymore. But the lyrics to "America Is Not The World," as somebody here alreday noted, are abominable. I haven't felt this struck by one of my favorite artist's tastelessness since Neil's lyrics about fighting evil on the wings of a goddam dove.

Is Morrissey not familiar with our system of democracy? The reason there are no black, gay, or female presidents is because, shockah, most Americans don't WANT one. I assumed Moz would be above the boring 'i'd elect a nazi if she was a black lesbian in a wheelchair,' Air America rhetoric. But, sadly, no. And handled with all the subtlety of a backyard wrestling match, too, I might add.

The rest of the album's lyrics are fantastic as always, by the way

Yeah, and that song's placed up front on the album too. I love Irish Blood, English Heart, though.

"The reason there are no black, gay, or female presidents is because, shockah, most Americans don't WANT one."

Wouldn't this prove his point that the USA isn't inclusive or just?

what's not 'just' about the democratic process?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing. There can be unjust reasons for voting/not voting for someone though

listless droning quality = morrissey's entire career, non? not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

Oh, roger.

listless droning quality actually a good thing according to my recent cd purchases.

morrissey wants the cover story in spin magazine AND to shove a hamburger up my ass.

he's lovin' it (tm)

what's not 'just' about the democratic process?

the tyranny of the majority

This is a joke of sorts, yes? Also: you're not a Democracy, you're a Republic. Several Americans have told me that the distinction is important.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Morrissey wants to shove a hamburger up my ass because he doesn't eat his friends. He uses them as weapons! We should send out the nefarious Hamburgler to shake him up at his Los Angeles villa.

I love the Smiths and much of Morrissey, but his reputation as a Wildean lyrical wit continues to baffle me.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Morrissey's best lyrics are the ones that allow you to camp it up the most. "shy bald buddhist..." "tatooes boy from birkenhead..."&c. &c.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

sam Y, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're thinking of Jack Bruce, formerly of Cream.

america is not the world doesn't really have anything remotely new to say on the subject, but just hearing morrissey moan about how everyone in estonia says "you fat pig" and the hamburger thing make it all good for a laugh.

i've already changed my mind on the rest of the album - I now like every song (even "America... despite the lyrics)

But I wonder, "has the Moz changed or have I changed?" Because his great songs (and there are several truly great songs on this record) used to overwhelm me, would genuinely make me feel something, and now, they're just beautiful sad songs, and don't carry the resonance they used to. It's probably because I was a teenager when I was heavily into his solo stuff, and now my emotions are firmly in check and I don't feel bad about treating girls poorly or about leaving high school anymore.

Either way, I'm still a fan.

We're all getting older I guess...
