Convince me not to put my live Aninal Collective LP up on eBay

It's my favorite thing they've done by far. And there's only, like, 200 or something, right?

On the other hand, it's probably on slsk by now, right? and it's fetching big coin on eBay, right? shit, people, i need to move halfway across the country in two months. Is there any reason I should keep this?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

YOu could listen while you go halfway across the county.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, well, that is if you record it onto a tape

Aja (aja), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd keep it dude. it will only help you down the line, even if you do so decide to sell it at some point. mark my words...

duke keeper, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm...good advice. i guess i'll keep it. but i will have a fit if they reissue it at some point.

i've gotten burned by reissues so many times!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

How much is it going for right now?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

last i heard, neighborhood of $200

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sell it. It's never gonna be worth much more than that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And it's infinitely more likely to be reissued it is to rise significantly in value.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

even if reissued i'm telling you. collector-people are sometimes out to disavow the "reissue." almost always! and i would say it's reasonably doubtful it will be reissued on vinyl.

duke knot, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

thing is, its a great record. its the only one i play often. i'm really torn here. $200 would be sweet right about now

i could finance a house if i sold all my nnck records

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

haha you can get those back.

duke kidding, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It still drops the price significantly, duke. Either way I can't see Animal Collective getting any "hotter" and driving the price up much more (I think they have reached their band of the moment limit basically.)

Also Roger I would encode it to mp3 if you can before you sell it. But I would still sell it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

$200?! people are so stupid. (...said the man who just got $140 off of two muslimgauze cds from my junkbox.)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have the capabilities to encode it, but i'm sure somebody's sharing it. Right??

Maybe I'll just put it up with a ridiculously high reserve - like $250. I definitely can't pass that up if someone wants to buy it then.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"It still drops the price significantly, duke. Either way I can't see Animal Collective getting any "hotter" and driving the price up much more (I think they have reached their band of the moment limit basically.)"

the last point is crucial to your argument, yet could very well be fallacious in my humble opinion! roger don't get no satisfaction from pronouncing them as peaking. and that's all you're saying really.

duke blimpie, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think with Sung Tongs coming out we have yet to see the height of their popularity, actually

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think your right, roger, especially considering that the new one is more pop than drone than here comes the indian.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely. i mean give me a break, anyone see the recent shows with like one song from "tongs" and five more new and amazing ones?! and as a full band.

duke anthology, Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I didn't realize the new album wasn't actually out (I assumed it was since I had heard so much about it.) So I am changing my mind. Keep until the new "pop" album comes out and either a) contributes to them gaining tons and tons of new fans or b) losing a bunch of old fans who want to retreat to the days when they were "good" and then sell it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

who on earth pays $200?! i just went to ebay and i'm not seeing what you're seeing!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the price was $178. it was a completed item about a month ago...trust me on this. I spend hours searching completed items, its how I figure out what to sell and what to not bother listing. But perhaps I've said too much....

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes now we will all search completed items and. . . and. . . what will we do then?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes we will all sell our rare live Aninal Collective records. TAKE THAT PEOPLE WHO WAIT TOO LONG TO SELL RARITIES!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yikes

duke arena, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaaa. anyway, poke fun all you like, but it works. I've been on ebay since the item numbers were four digits, buddy. OLD school, sucka!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, your like so cool. I wonder how much money you could get if you just offered yourself up for auction.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

helpful advice is sure to originate from such character as this, eh?

duke moonlit, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Who said I was giving helpful advice? I was just saying what I would do if I had somehow gotten an Animal Collective record worth $$.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and then I was making fun of Roger for saying doofus-y stuff. But that was separate.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd have to have bought one. i have one myself see. and i am so cool as well, right?

duke borneo, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you search completed items on eBay?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it is on slsk. they don't plan on reissuing it. on the other hand they do plan on selling live recordings via their website, so maybe that might make the price drop?!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

all i have left now for ebay is A.R.E. wepons demo CD, rather an opposite case in every way, which i'm sure would be borne out by a search

duke manhattan, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then you aren't as cool as Roger. Also you may not be as "old school" depending on how long the digits were when you started eBaying.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa... "how long the digits"? is that what this is about?

duke benn, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ROOOOOGER. The answer is: tape it, download it & burn it, sell it with a high reserve. I mean, shit, dude. That's a lot of money for a piece of plastic--go for it. I don't own a single record I wouldn't part with for that type of money. (That's either a testament to the lameness of my record collection or my avarice; I'm not sure which.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of pieces of plastic go for way more. all the time. ever seen a serious soul/funk collection?

duke wayy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i know people pay ridiculous amounts for records--that's not surprising. just that i don't own any that are worth that (as far as I know.. though maybe when, in 2035, noise is the new krautrock, i might be rolling in the doubt.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

in the doubt?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

DOUGH.

also the doubt. the doubt of whether or not to sell them on ebay.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the thing. who knew indistinguishable-at-the-time vanity pressings of various psych and funk shit would go for 600+ dollars? or house twelve inches for upwards of 200? who is to say, especially when NO time has thus elapsed...
and "hollinddagain" IS a vanity pressing basically, each cover different, the whole nine yards.

duke gekko, Thursday, 13 May 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i want someone to pay me $200 for my lightning bolt LPs with screened covers.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

May I please have permission from ILM to turn this thread into a one-act play? It's a thing of beauty. It's got everything. Tension, pathos, anger, confusion. I love it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sell it. It's a fucking record not a baby. Plus, if you horde it waiting for the price to reach "$600" (ha ha ha ha haha), then it will never happen -- pure karmic consequence.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

pertty good when a no-neck rip-off record fetches no-neck prices... grow a beard, dicks!

sexyDancer, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it is on slsk.

I have looked for it (not recently, though) and have never been able to find it. Any tips on what I should be searching for, or will it turn up by searching "hollinddagain"?

Ryan WS (fffv), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott Seward is going to Broadway! What will you call the play?

As for Alex, who works in grammatical and spelling errors the way other artists work in oil and acrylic paints, your jealousy of my eBay veteran status is childish and appalling. You sure are prissy and hostile for a dude. Maybe you've just had those flowers in your hair for a bit too long.

Ian - i think you're right. I've sold records for ridiculously high prices - lived off eBay for an entire 7 months once, it was beautiful - but never really sold off anything I actually LIKED, you know?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, IS that ARE Weapons demo cd worth anything? I'd guess not.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

record collectors be hatin on ARE.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My play will be called: for ebayers who have considered suicide/when the coloured vinyl is enuf

It will star the Baldwin brothers.

Daniel Baldwin will play Aja.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I just want to point out that you mispelled the name of the band in the thread TITLE, Roger!

Also I am the farthest thing from jealous of you. Go on laboring under whatever delusions you like though if it helps you sleep at night.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, don't misspell your ebay listing or you're not going to sell shit, ROG.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"You sure are prissy and hostile for a dude. Maybe you've just had those flowers in your hair for a bit too long."

that's a line for the play.
next line:

'i guess that that's what san francisco can do to a man..."

duke shaw, Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Roger, Alex, try to remember a time when you were REALLY angry. Like when your dog died or something. This is all good stuff. All useable.

Okay, ACTION.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm not playing MYSELF. You'll have to audition.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, you're genius. wanna help me write my certain-to-be-a-blockbuster west coast pop art experimental band biopic?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger- Oh we will be casting. I'm just looking for choice lines. Maybe you could go into a monologue that would show motivation for your character. About that time that your mom wouldn't let you buy a Kiss record or something like that. Just so we can flesh out the role and have people understand the obsession with vinyl better.

Lauren- Sure! They had a great story.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Although why someone hasn't written a screenplay about The Monks by now is beyond me.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My Destroy All Monsters 7" is still up for grabs!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom not buying me a Kiss record would have been worth a million Mothers Day presents. Besides, something more dramatic, something less universal would be better...like, my father was killed clutching a Velvet Underground and Nico album with the peelable banana or something. By hippie comic book collectors. Or something.

Try to get either Vince Vaughn, T Model Ford, or the ghost of David Koresh to play me.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i do not want to be in this play, as i'm already committed to the film version of "stream-of-consciousness cover connections," which we're trying to finish in time for sundance 2005, but, at the risk of stating the obvious, i'd just like to point out that you could fund the entire production by selling the damn LP on ebay, so that should make up your mind for you right there.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What if I were to tell you that putting this record on eBay could endanger the lives of our troops?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

my father was killed clutching a Velvet Underground and Nico album with the peelable banana or something.

maybe killed BY the velvet underground and nico album, ninja throwing star-style.

"MM: I guess there are different mentalities. You hear boring-ass, ambient hippie crap, and somebody who considers themselves pretty punky would think of that shit as crap. There's people who use electronics to be aggressive and entertaining and there's people who do it to be fucking trippy and healing, but what they're not realizing is that being aggressive is also being healing. But some of that really fucking heavy techno shit - I see glimmers of good shit in it, but it's fuckin' boring. They should throw some singing over it."

I just suddenly remembered the first time I heard the term "freak folk." It was maybe 2002 or 2003, and a few friends of mine had decided to become crust-punky dumpster divers (it was also the first time I became aware of dumpster diving as a lifestyle choice). One of these guys had bought some music mag and it had Sunburned (burnt?) Hand of the Man on the cover and a tagline with "freak folk" in it. It all seemed very strange to me at the time. Just thought I'd share that.
