this here guardian article re-tells the tale of those near misses
that were held off the 'top spot' by something rubbish. vienna by joe dolce, the fabs by englebert humperdinck etc etc. but i'm sure there must be less canoniacal/trad examples than the ones mentioned here. id forgotten that kelis ent to number 2, and was kept off by michelle from pop idol. it's stil happening today so that's cool!

wasn't suede's stay together kept off by something rather terrible?

only 5s for moving too fast and teenage dirtbag?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and no score at all for 'song 2'? i assume that's because you feel it transcends the decimal rating system?

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That page was going so well until you gave an 8 to Mis-Teeq.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

my marks were moderated to appease ILM somewhat. Teenage Dirtbag will always be a 0 for me, Moving Too Fast is the worst Artful Dodger track by far. Song 2 should have a 7.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know why The Living Years has a 6 tho, jeebus

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

3T ft Michael Jackson 'Why' gets 7, nice smooth vocal work

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

french kiss!!! a (10) if ever there was one.
a tune actually *designed* to make kids in clubs go crackers.

piscesboy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Ya never made it to number two. Go figure.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That article celebrates the fact that 'Mull of Kyntyre' kept the 'Floral Dance' (which I think featured Terry Wogan) off of number one. I think I prefer the latter.
