Any suggestions on what to buy from these two???
I heard a song or two recently but didn't catch the names

...neither is as hott as tina hobley.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Mobley - No Room For Squares, The Turnaround, Straight No Filter, A Caddy For Daddy, Workout, Hank Mobley's All-Stars, Soul Station. All on Blue Note, all available dirt cheap. If you feel like spending more money, get The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions, a six-CD Mosaic box.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Silver - Song for My Father, Blowin' the Blues Away, The Tokyo Blues, and Finger Poppin' are all records I really enjoy.

For Mobley, I second No Room for Squares and especially Soul Station.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The 4CD Horace Silver "Retrospective" box set is rather nice too.

If you like Horace Silver and Hank Mobley you may also enjoy Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, Lou Donaldson, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine.... I'd suggest looking for a good Blue Note comp.!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This looks like rather a good one.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit, that reminds me:

This is a FANTASTIC double-disc Blue Note comp. I listened that thing to death.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody's mentioned Mobley's Roll Call yet, which has the fantastically catchy A Baptist Beat on it. Or Freddie Hubbard, who is on that album and made some excellent Blue Note albums in his own name. You can't really go wrong with sixties Blue Note albums, they had a bunch of excellent musicians (the ones Stewart lists, Joe Henderson, Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams, Paul Chambers, etc) who all played on each other's albums, so the results were almost always good, and frequently superb.

Andrew Norman, Friday, 14 May 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the bastardization of Mobley's album title only makes me hate John Mayer that much more

revive!
I second all Phil Freeman's Hank Mobley picks and Andrew Norman's recommendation of Roll Call. It always seemed to me, or maybe I read it somewhere, that he wasn't mentioned as much as he should be because he wasn't Sonny Rollins or John Coltrane, "the middleweight champion of the sax" is that what somebody said on some liner notes? Pretty much all the albums I've got on him I love listening to from beginning to end. He's a jazzman, but always with that little bit of R&B feel. He's also a very solid and consistent composer- a drummer friend of mine one time said something about him being a good songwriter for drummers- the drum breaks being essential parts of the songs.

Oh yeah, right now I'm listening to The Turnaround- if you've got it, listen to it too!

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 21 January 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Recently I've been digging Hank Mobley's Dippin' a typical Blue Note but great! Soul Station and Straight No Filter get the thumbs up too.

I'm listening at present to a weirdass Blue Note Horace Silver reissue from a couple years ago. It's three early 70s pop/fusion/funk things (That Healin' Feelin', Total Response, All) collected as "United States of Mind." Pretty good, in a Roy Ayers/Gil Scott Heron vein. Not what you think of when you think of Blue Note and Horace Silver.

My most recent purchase, Another Workout, is good too! Maybe the question should be: did Hank Mobley release any bad records as a leader?

silver's song for my father is great for many reasons, and the title track was borrowed by steely dan for 'rikki don't lose that number'

omar little, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Which became song for frasier's father to manhandle in say anything.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

i can't really listen to the title track because it's one of those high school jazz 101 tunes (see also watermelon man, work song, chameleon, etc.). blowin' the blues away is a favorite, though.

ha, there is a jam session there on fridays, starts about 1 am. the house drummer is great, but it can get pretty terrible as far as jam sessions go.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 18 August 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, maybe. Specs Wright on drums. never heard of him. still, pretty sweet recording/performance. kinda the sound of morgan/mobley coasting, but what a sound.

tylerw, Friday, 19 August 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

The "Jazz Messenger" volumes are something i return to time and time again. So too, "Six Pieces of Silver" and "Songs For My Father", however Mobley is absent from the latter.

Just picked up a copy of Total Fusion. Really enjoying the sound. Reminds me of Bartz's Harlem Bush Music (beyond the obvious Bey connection). Is there anything else in a similar vein I should be checking for?

it's strange, I was thinking "it seems like an awful lot of jazz greats have died this year" and then I thought "nah that's probably every year." But I googled 2012 and there really are a lot more this year.

I'd add "The Cape Verdean Blues" as another solid Silver pick.

Amazing how consistent those '60s Blue Note albums are. So far haven't gone wrong with any of the ones I've picked up.

o. nate, Thursday, 19 June 2014 14:47 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i don't think i've heard all of them, but i definitely haven't come across a bad 50s or 60s record by him. funny, he's probably as good/influential as anyone you'd care to name from that period, but he doesn't get the "genius" tag. must be because he wasn't an egomaniac or remotely "crazy."

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:02 (eleven years ago)

Well, I don't think I'd agree that he was as good or influential as anyone from that era, but he definitely had a knack for making really good records, developing a recognizable style and staying with it, and writing great melodies. I guess I don't find him as "interesting" as some of the heavyweights of the era? I kind of feel gross even dissecting this when he just died.

Hier Komme Die Warum Jetzt (Hurting 2), Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

My way of appreciating music is very far from considerations of influence, so I'm probably not best qualified to speak to that question, but in terms of sheer listening pleasure, I think Silver holds his own with other mid-60s heavyweights.

o. nate, Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:21 (eleven years ago)

yeah i guess that's what i meant -- just that silver was never positioned as THE DUDE WHO IS MOVING JAZZ FORWARD, like miles, monk, coltrane, etc. just he made extremely solid music.

tylerw, Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:35 (eleven years ago)

I'm listening to the Horace Silver Trio record with Art Blakey right now, and it's both a fantastic record and one where I think he sounds a LOT like Bud Powell.

Hier Komme Die Warum Jetzt (Hurting 2), Thursday, 19 June 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

true, but there are a zillion folks like that. he had a knack, like brubeck and guaraldi, for writing jazz that was extremely tuneful and accessible w/o (at least to a point) really threatening his credibility as a jazzman's jazzman. i mean, my mom is very very very far from a jazzhead but she has a bunch of horace silver records.

I think his jazz cred is still way, way above Brubeck or Guaraldi fwiw. Brubeck was a non-swingin' motherfucker who didn't even write his most famous tune.

I first discovered Horace Silver while digging into the early catalog of Art Blakey; odd how you can like something, start digging, and find something that you like so much more deeply. That "Spotlight on Drums" album posted above is truly one of the best proper jazz records ever released.
