So it's like mid-May already and I feel like there is no summer anthem yet... why is that? Did I miss it? If I did, tell me what it is please!

summer blues, Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Lou Reed featuring Groovefinder-Satellite Of Love

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it snowed here today

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

probably something by Kevin Lyttle or his ilk

soca-pop is all the rage, y'know

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

this is urgent!!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i know, i was going to start a similar summer jams thread myself! what will they be?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY YA!! HEYAA HEYEAYAAYAYAY!!!!!!3000

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ty feat Roots Manuva "Oh U Want Morre"

superultramega (superultramarinated), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote The Sport Of Kings by Cursor Miner. It may not be exceptionally summery, but it sure is one hell of an anthem.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Be patient. There will be one. I promise you.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"yeah!" is as close as we've got so far, but it got released too early for true summer anthem status.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that Beyonce nazi cheeseburger anthem?

sexyDancer, Friday, 14 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Lovin It"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chicago Sold Out"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, it's track 4 from the new Black Dice. You know, the banger.

I just think they should re-release/remix "The Best Things In Life Are Free". There's a summer anthem and a really strong message for us all.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Failing that, the triumphant return of Crystal Waters or Lou Bega.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

we need a good summer teen movie sndtrk stat

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But no Smashmouth plz.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

slicker - knock me down girl
demon - in the park
nina sky feat. fabba - move your body

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Maroon 5!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

jabba not fabba sorry. although i'm not sure which one i'd actually choose to be called.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That Nina Sky song SHOULD be.

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah!", obv.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i went for 'should be' rather than 'is' on the basis that there aren't any. are there? are? there?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

looking again at the pazz & jop 2003 singles list makes me think we'll never have another summer like last summer - "crazy in love", "rock your body", "ignition", "danger! high voltage", "house of jealous lovers", "beautiful", "pass that dutch", etc. last fall wasn't bad either what with "milkshake" AND "get low".

here are some more prospective summer anthems (these will be my anthems, anyway):

- yung wun "tear it up" ... is the fucking business
- young gunz "friday night" ... probably not, they annoy too many people
- busta rhymes etc. "shorty" ... woulda happened by now, i guess

here's theory #2:

- nina sky "move ya body" ... myke is on point, they're twins!!
- beenie man "dude" ... because it's got the hook.
- elephant man ft youngbloodz "jook gal" ... because of the "i'm sean paul from the home of the strip club" verse

maybe it will be dancehall summer!! a new dancehall wednesday night just started a couple minutes from my house. ihopefully it takes off.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i think "yeah!" maybe has burned itself out? everyone i know is starting to get sick of it. i'd like to hear a remix where they take ludacris out and put j-kwon in.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Thus far, tipsy is still getting unstoppable play. and i second the dancehall summer. This is the year of legit dancehall breakthru w/hip hop guests out th' wazoo.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh Tipsy is soooo blah. Not bad, but not good either.

Dancehall forreal though. I'd get behind that.
ESPECIALLY MOVE YA BODY!

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

people say "dancehall breaks through this year" every year since forever. you could even probably argue that it has already, really, or as much as you could expect it to.

OTOH, this year feels different somehow. i'm not tracking the amt of dancehall videos per hour on each of the music video networks but maybe somebody should. it seems very very high right now.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

so you're agreeing while not agreeing vahid?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yes and no.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

signs point to maybe and elephant man

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I donno, it seems like momentum has been building for the past couple years now though. I mean, Sean Paul was a big step up from Shaggy.

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid otm about 2003 being an amazing year for summer anthems

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"you want the remix? call me. you want your cheese sticks? call me."
see, if Korn took themselves just this seriously; I'd be all over it.

No i wouldn't; but you know?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf it's tipsy, easy

g--ff (gcannon), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Young Gunz are far too slept on.

"Friday Night" >>>>>> Tipsy

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

cold summer scenario: it will be the mobb deep track.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 15 May 2004 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i love friday night, but it's got nothing on tipsy.

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 15 May 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the Nina Sky song, and here's a proper Summer house music anthem: Lies to Yourself by Dr. Kucho!, you read it here first. It reminds me a bit of that Cassius tune, The Sound of Violence.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jason Forrest's "10 Amazing Years" won't be getting radio play, but I doubt there'll be a better summer jam for 2004. Unrelenting Sounds of the 1979 Post-Disco Crash is a perfect sumemr album.

Kareem Estefan (Kareem Estefan), Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Another shout-out for the Jason Forrest CD - I just got it and it rocks possibly even more than his Donna Summer CD from last year.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"It reminds me a bit of that Cassius tune, The Sound of Violence."

Big recommendation as far as I'm concerned!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 16 May 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Urm what's so great about Tipsy? Sup-gridnin drums, boring rapping, it's a decent club jam at best.

djdee2005, Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"What Makes You Think You're the One." Remix f/t J-Lo.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Urm what's so great about Tipsy?

It's all about the synth-bass thing that comes in mid-verse, man.

Maciej, Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That, and the shout-alongability of the hook, of course.

Maciej, Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

NINA SKY! And if that don't work, I'm sure Beenie Man's "Dude / Vitamin X" or something from Mr. Vegas will do juuust fine.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

David is "Vitamin X" a Beenie cut or do you mean Baby Cham's (excellent) "Vitamin S" on the same riddim as "Dude" (Fiesta 2003)?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 16 May 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

btw Ronan there's a Linus Loves remix!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, soddit, in chart terms it's blatantly gonna be Mai-Ia-Hii. Or another three months of Eamon & Frankee.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nina Sky and "Tipsy" both seconded.

I want "Fallen" by Mya and Chingy to be released in the UK, but I don't know if it will be...

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fallen (Remix)" is more like five different summer anthems played on five different radios all in the same room (it's the Zaireeka of pop!).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

'Rubicon' needs a remix. I need more time.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Zone 4 remix of "Fallen", yeah? I can't actually find (and have never heard) the original of it anywhere. You're right, it sounds like a bootleg!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The original is very different - sumptuous classy soul-pop rather than compressed distillation of everything on the radio right now.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it on whichever Mya album has "Things Come And Go"? If it is, I may have to acquire that album.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No Lex the real reason you need the album is WHATEVER BITCH!!!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, that's sorted - another post-exam present to myself. And it's probably got "My Love Is Like... Wo!"

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it does.

Do you have Fear of Flying, Lex? It's pretty good. "Free", "Case of the Ex", "Again & Again", "Best of Me", "That's Why I Wanna Fight", "Ride & Shake", "Pussycats" --> all great tracks!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have any Mya album, she doesn't seem to bother with the UK at all - "My Love Is Like... Wo!" only just crawled into the top 40 at No 38 - and so I've only heard a handful of her stuff. I wonder if these US R&B divas draw names out of a hat to decide who has to break the UK (Kelis, Blu Cantrell) and who can stay at home (Mya, Brandy).

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You also *need* "It's All About Me" (from her first album) and the lovely "Best Of Me (Trackmasters Mix)" with Jay-Z.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I also *need* an endless supply of money. Downloading R&B is so hazardous, the beats never sound crisp enough for me.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No these ones are worth it trust! You'd be hardpressed to find the latter any other way (while yer at it get the glorious trackmasters remix of "Bills Bills Bills" which has a similar fragile elegance vibe)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, just cos the sound quality bugs me doesn't mean I won't download it anyway in lieu of having cash...

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

insania, duh

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 20 May 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, listening to Superpitcher. I'll download the Armand remixes tho!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

otm about the AVH track. wicked. but all these things really do need it not to be raining and maybe have some beach in the locality.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hear my name is almost electroclash!!!!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

jentina - bad ass strippa (esp. radio slave remix)

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
This article talks about how there wasn't really a consensus summer anthem in 2004 -- which I'll agree with -- but the details and examples are kind of baffling.

First, the article claims that the summer anthem of 2003 was clearly "In Da Club" -- I dunno, I thought "In Da Club" peaked a little early; I would've said "Crazy in Love."

Then, the candidates it offers for this year are Lil Flip's "Sunshine," Terror Squad's "Lean Back," and Juvenile's "Slow Motion." Obviously, all three of those songs got mad airplay, but "Lean Back" is the only one that seems anthem-worthy. And why not also mention "I Like That" and "Move Ya Body"? (I was hoping "Move Ya Body" would be the summer anthem, but apparently it didn't take off nationwide.)

Anyway, your thoughts? Now that the summer's almost gone.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, this summer was all about "Lola's Theme". Obvious, but true.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I never did get that Linus Loves remix.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Later I graduated and worked for my dad's company, Archi-Tech, I never saw Ralph Zuckenheimer again either. That all happened a long time ago. I guess if I learned anything, it was that good friends last forever, even when they're gone.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm Still in Love with You" by Sean Paul for first part of the summer, anyway.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that article's wrong--Summer '03 was clearly owned by Beyonce. For all of June and July, you had like a one in two chance of finding "Crazy in Love" on the radio at any single point in time (and then same for "Baby Boy" in August). "In Da Club" peaked too early.

The most obvious song of the summer of '04 would've been "Yeah!," but it was released a couple months too early (and neither of the follow-ups are exactly summer anthem types). The omnipresence of "Lean Back" on the radio didn't really hit until late August, so that's out, same goes for "Sunshine". "Slow Motion" isn't nearly banging or anthemic enough, "I Like Dat" was really only a minor hit, and "Move Your Body" never hit that level of over-saturation.

The article is right about that, there was no summer anthem to match 2003.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Lola's Theme and Baby Cakes, obv, it's really easy to pinpoint what the summer anthems were when the summer's over.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

in clubs most definitely-

Tiga-Pleasure From The Bass
Alter Ego-Rocker
Mylo-Drop The Pressure

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"She Will Be Loved", obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

also See It In A Boy's Eyes to an extent.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

you know i finally heard Van Helden's 'Hear My Name' last night and can't see the fuss. ditto 'My My My' - when you think what this man used to be capable of...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

In the US it was "Turn Me On" (only released here recently) and/or "Take Me Out" ("Lean Back" and "Move Ya Body" would be runner ups).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a "maroon 5 dance megamix" last Friday, it was so bad, a big thumping beat behind parts of "this love" and the new one. dire.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: but yeah, there was no 'anthem'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON THAT RONAN?????

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

over here, in order of omnipresence:

O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei
Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get Retarded
Freestylers - Push Up
Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme
Mylo - Drop The Pressure
Nina Sky - Move Ya Body
Milk & Sugar - Let The Sunshine
Armand Van Helden - My My My
Royal Gigolos - California Dreaming
Danzel - Pump It Up
Junior Jack - Stupidisco
Alter Ego - Rocker (was more of a club hit, not on the radio)

I'm actually quite baffled why that Freestylers track hasn't received any ILM comments - I would've expected that every Basement Jaxx fan would be all over it!

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Are those all actual radio hits in the UK?? I've only heard Black Eyed Peas and Nina Sky.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm talking about Benelux/Germany - probably not all tracks made it (in/to) the UK.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Push Up is probably the weakest track on the new Freestylers album. It's just a bit gay.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

in Croatia:

Junior Jack - Stupidisco
Danzel - Pump It Up
Usher feat. Lil Jon & Ludacris - Yeah
Martin Solveig - Rocking Music
Armand Van Helden - Hear My Name
Maroon 5 - This Love
O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei

"Move Ya Body" was getting big over the summer but has become omnipresent only during the last month or so.

that "Madan" shite by Martin Solveig was huge (and i mean HUGE) since the end of last year, and is still a floorfiller - this summer i've heard it in every place i went to that played poppy house, aaaaarrrgghhh!

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

On my shores, 'Trick Me' ruled the summer.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Push Up" doesn't have any friction to its Prince-aping though. One of the things about the Renaissance of Prince these past few years is tat most of the artists involved still sounded like themselves. Not so with "Push Up".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it may not be amazing but it's the best track on that dire Freestylers record. I swear if I hear any more bad breakbeat this year I'll faint. So much crap coming out of that scene it's untrue.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

seems harsh, isn't it just that you and many people (including me) are just bored of breaks generally again?

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

no honestly I think it's just become really massive, judging by Glastonbury, and there are so so so many breaks bootlegs of classics, all of which are nasty and close to hard house type stuff.

the impression I get from the guys in the shop in London is that breaks is HUGE now, like the new trance/progressive.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And I wouldn't say it was crap just for being "the new trance" or something, it's just terrible, so much of it is entirely lacking any groove whatsoever, just a massive break ruining any chance of you wanting to dance to the record, which sounds ridiculous but is actually the case, the actual breakbeats are what's ruining the breakbeat records! The new Evil Nine record is quite good and I still can have a laugh at a Plump DJs show but other than that.......brrr

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

and Santos can be good too.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What a shitty year for it's been for pop music. I can't believe there hasn't been a truly massive summer song. Closest thing I can think of was "Yeah" (Usher, not LCD Soundsystem), but that song sucks.

Does anybody know where I can find out what really were the biggest hits of the last four months? Any Billboard chart databases out there? There's gotta be a better candidate for summer song of the year than fuckin' "Yeah."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly you haven't heard that Shifty Shellshock song

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)
