"version 78 style" - king tubby

there's a mix of "ali baba" by tubby, too, but i don't know exactly what it's called ... it's a bit trippier than "i shave the barber"

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops that linval thompson tune is actually called "six babylon"

scottontharox (scottkundla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Current favourite : the Studio One dub of Delroy Wilson's 'Run Run' (Running Dub), slashing horns, a super-tuff riddim, fragments of voice and then 20 secs before the end Delroy's vocal cuts loose.....'Girl, I'm gonna hold you tight'. Fantastic Stuff.

Crystallites, "Dubbing the Chariot"

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr C I don't know that Hookim dub but I have a "Send Another Moses" on vinyl, on the 12" of "Five Man Army" by Dillinger, Trinity, Wayne Wayde, AL Campbell and Junior Tamlin. Is the rhythm "Five Man Army" (as used by Massive Attack on the track of the same name?

That 12" is a particularly proud posession, best 10p I ever spent (OSD 002, as seen here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~tapirs/osd12.htm)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Congos did a song with a line that said "send another moses" but I doubt that's what you're looking for.

Dubbing the Chariot is ace.

"Pop A Top" - Andy Capp is good too and one of the earliest dub tunes.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That was "Children Crying", wasn't it?

DL, what's that Tamlins track like (and what record's it on?) I know nowt about the Tamlins.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Five Man Army by Dillinger et al with me here at work on a CD that YOU burned for me, Tim! (It's called 'I Will Cool You' and is fantastic). Will give it a listen and see.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, it's one of my favourite all time reggae tracks. Cover of Randy Newman. I got some other stuff by the Tamlins but they were piss poor by comparison.

King Tubby: "Dark Destroyer Dub"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 14 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Feeling a *bit* hesitant here to name this for an 'all time best' but ...damn, it's a great tune, and there's more than ten minutes of it :)

"Tarab Dub [Wasteland Mix]"- Nicky Skopelitis

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 14 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i needs to get me some more dub.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the dub of the Tamlin's Baltimore is called Demolition City btw. Sly & Robbie.

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 15 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks mullygrubber! :-)

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha - in fact 'Send Another Moses' is ON IT, but it's credited to Dillinger alone, and is not the same rhythm as the 'Send Another Moses' that I was talking about. In fact it's not the same thing at all - from the fragments of the Hookim dub you can hear a mighty organ intro and the vocal and rhythm is smooth-ish trad roots circa 75-78, not steppers. This is really bugging me!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Personal favorite probably 'Black Vest' by The Upsetters or 'Frozen Dub' by Augustus Pablo. Maybe 'Michael Talbot Affair' by Keith Hudson.

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"King Tubby's Meets the Rockers Uptown" agustus pablo
LPs: Garvey's Ghost/Burning Spear and LKJ in Dub/Linton Kwesi Johnson
obvious picks, but great ones IMHO

patrick dujon, Monday, 6 February 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

What's a good place to start getting in to dub?

Englebert Humperdinck Fan Club President (R. J. Greene), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Lee Scratch Perry's "Arkology" is a great place to start

bendy (bendy), Monday, 6 February 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

HELLO MIKEY DREAD AFRICAN ANTHEM DELUXXXXE!

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

(all of the album songs... just best dub ever)

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Arkology is a good place to start with L Perry, but he was never very good at making full-on dubs. Get King Tubby's Special or a Scientist Meets.... album.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

re: Arkology, Congos' "Don't Blame It on I" is an all-time fave. Dub with falsetto, can't get better than that.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 02:26 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
anyone else check out Scientist's latest, 911?

patita (patita), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

picked it up a couple of months ago. the first three tracks are killer, but the vocal numbers that follow seem weaker and a little less inspiring musically as well. then a fine segue of "Run Saddam, Bush Coming", "Find Him In A Hole" and "Punk Motherf**er" (there's a missing asterisk) but things become sort of diluted again afterwards. there's an unexpected dancehall riddim tucked at the end too.
