CDR 80: What shall I play in my new car?

OK, it's Friday afternnon, I'm bored and I'm getting altogehter far too excited about going to get my new car tomorrow (just don't anyone ask what happened to the old one, it's still far too painful, OK?).

So - once I've signed all the forms and parted with the hard-earned and climbed behind the wheel for the first time: what should I play?

It's going to take me a while to get home again.... oooh, about 80 minutes I'd reckon.... and during that time I want to test out both the car and the stereo with a full range of sounds to reflect not only my tastes but also a full range of driving conditions from the misery of crawling through a traffic jam past miles of roadworks on the way to work in the pissing rain first thing in the morning; through 3:00 AM, empty Motorway, foot-to-the floor; to sunny day, open road, not a care in the world.

Points may be awarded for suggesting songs that I like / own (no clues - even if you know don't know me you should at least know where the "Search" option is); bonus points may be added for suggestions that are somehow driving / automobile related; and points may be deducted if you suggest something that I hate, wouldn't allow to defile my collection or am for any irrational reason offended by.

That's if I can be arsed of course.

Which I almost certainly won't be.

Who knows? I might even make a real CDR of your suggestions which I'll then probably forget to take with me!

You don't have to suggest an entire 80 minutes btw - just a track or 2 will do!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Buzzcocks "Fast Cars"

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah! Now I bet you're expecting bonus points for that Robert; but unfortunately Fast Cars was the very first track I played when I got into my last car - and I did ask you not to remind me about that because of how painful the memories are....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it "Driving In My Car" would set completely the wrong tone.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

A little obvious maybem, but I have nothing against a little Madness.

Shal we put down Drive My Car as another possible while we're at it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just that when I hear "Driving In My Car" it sounds like one of those clown cars where the doors blow off every 50 yards.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

OK then, another completely obvious one - Jonathan Richman "Roadrunner"

Will you be driving it around the streets of Reading anytime? How will I spot it?

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Endless Sea - Iggy Pop
Of Lillies & Remains
Death on 2 Legs (because I'm in love with my car is too easy)
Little Johnny Jewel
Tatooed Love Boys

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it a Maserati? If so Little tiny 1/8" Jack by the Rip-Off Artist.

___ (___), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Roadrunner a definite!

Robert, I'll be back in Reading by lunchtime, so if you see something rather like this heading in your direction, get out of the way:

The Endless Sea? Of Lillies & Remains? Did some bastard tell you what I managed to do to my last car?

I've only got the Queen songs on vinyl so too much of a drag; Little Johnny Jewel's a good 'un; why Tattoed Love Boys, I'm curious?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not a Maserati I'm agraid - neither is it a Little Red Corvette, a Bitchin' Camaro or even a Little GTO

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You should buy a car more condusive for us picking songs then!

___ (___), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly me, if only I'd thought!

They don't have to be car related y'know....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

why Tattoed Love Boys, I'm curious
Roxor
They don't have to be car related y'know

There was no theme intended .. just a-rockin'.

Now I'm curious what happend to your last car...

+ while you're doing Modern Lovers .. "She Cracked" ...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Roxor"

Fair enough - excellent reason.

"Now I'm curious what happend to your last car..."

Let's just say there was some terminal unpleasantness involving a river.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"She Floated Away" - Husker Du

NickB (NickB), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

First track should be whatever tune they used to advertise the car on TV, so you can see if it was well selected for the car.

___ (___), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Public Enemy "You're Gonna Get Yours"

"Out the window middle finger for all
Jealous at my ride, stereo and blackwalls"

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tinted windows, super bad
Lookin' like the car the Green Hornet had"

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"She Floated Away"

Bastard!

"First track should be whatever tune they used to advertise the car on TV, so you can see if it was well selected for the car."

Afaik it hasn't been advertised on TV in the UK - I dunno if it has been in the US: anyone?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Go-Betweens - "Streets of Your Town"

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Amon Tobin's "Sordid" is a ridiculously good song for driving to, especially if'n yer driving VERY FAST.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"My 98's fly, I don't drive no junk
No cop gotta a right to call me a punk"

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

gary numan to thread

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i would put cars on repeat for 80 minutes.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"gary numan to thread"

You really have been using that Search function effectively, Cutty!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shangri-Las "Leader Of The Pack"

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You really have been using that Search function effectively, Cutty!

actually, i'm only up to the letter M in my quest to read every post that every ILM'er has written.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"First track should be whatever tune they used to advertise the car on TV, so you can see if it was well selected for the car."

"Afaik it hasn't been advertised on TV in the UK - I dunno if it has been in the US: anyone?"

Isn't this interweb thingy marvellous, let's have a look shall we.... hang on, 3 different songs by Celine Dion? Wtf? Also something called L-O-V-E by some woman called Fisher who I don't think I've ever heard but doesn't look too promising from her write-up on AMG.

No, no, no, I'm sure we can come up with loads of suggestions that are waaaaaay better than those!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Shangri-Las "Leader Of The Pack""

As a good old unreconstituted Reading Punk, I'd really have to substitute the K9's version, which was re-titled "A Dose Of The Clap" ("I met her at the candy store / I fucked her 'til my balls were raw / That's when I fell for....")

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 14 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I should get points for the concept, although the ultimate outcome of "no!" is agreed.

Does it make you question whether you want to buy this car? I mean - they target Celine Dion listeners for those wheels!

___ (___), Friday, 14 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Not at all, it merely makes me eager to redress any damage that may have been done to the reputation and credibility of the vehicle....

Once I have got the car I shall therefore be targetting Celine Dion listeners with those wheels!
