I'm listening to it for the second time end to end and ... it's really good. But is it lasting good? Remains to be seen. The Writz, Real MCs, and Moonshine are the current trumps.

dud.

fgfg, Saturday, 15 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

When is this released anyway?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 15 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Came out Tuesday in the US and Japan, next month in Australia and Europe. I ought not to flog my own dolphin too much here, but I will say that I personally came to enjoy Gab's record more once I got used to the idea of it not be a Blackalicious record. Vitamin D and Jake One are definitely two very talented cats.

And the Maroons record that Xcel prodcued, with Lateef on vocals, that's done, and I got it, and it's out of hand.

Isaac/Quannum

Isaac, Saturday, 15 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway, dud.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember one time i think it was me, ethan, and maybe alex in sf (? i could be completely off on this one) talking about how fucking fierce gab was on that one freestyle on the solesides best of and wondering why he traded that for the "world-weary raconteur" schtick he's been peddling since "swan lake".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend hated it. I have yet to hear it. He said it sounded like Blackalicious b-sides.

DEAR INDiE RAPPERS: YOU DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE OLD PEOPLE OR SPACE ALIENS, YOUR PAL, STRONGO>

What the hell are you on about?

djdee2005, Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, old people? like goody-two-shoes -shit?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 16 May 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard Way Of The Light and it's a nice track, I thought the beat sounded fresh.

Did hear him do some other tracks from it live and wasn't too impressed though.

Mil, Sunday, 16 May 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a dud, but it's hardly Blackalicious, either.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that Solesides freestyle is ridiculous. Just the other day I was thinking that I should listen to that to see if Gab was actually that good or if I was just imagining things.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

pure rim rest (Spottie), Friday, 25 June 2021 21:21 (four years ago)

he had been in such ill health for so long, but it always seemed like he was going to pull through and be that cool old rapper that could still hang. wasn't meant to be though, i guess. nia is an alltime classic in my book, and the first two eps are not far behind.

rest well, tj.☮

Wow. What a story — I appreciate the spiritual perspective even if it doesn’t work for some folks here. It sounds like whatever you want to call it, he somehow found a reserve of creativity he could basically tap into at will. (I haven’t listened to much newer stuff from any of these guys tho tbh.)

And still touring while on dialysis, damn.

Davis is basically a cow town too, how is it that the entire Bay Area is almost outdone by Davis in terms of conscious rap.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Saturday, 26 June 2021 03:07 (four years ago)

Blazing Arrow is probably my all time favorite rap record. Numerous songs on it were pure therapy for me and I always put it on when I was down. "First in Flight", "Aural Pleasure", "Paragraph President" (especially the 2nd half when he walks halfway home), and especially "Feel That Way" were doses of sunshine when I was in dark places. The fact they were also local gave me a warm feeling too - it was like my cool neighbors just dropped an all time record. Made me feel at home with all that funk, love and pure joy put to tape. I think because of the connection I had with it and also having been blessed to see him live touring for it back in 2001, this news hit pretty hard last night. Put on Blazing Arrow very loud and it brought all those memories back. RIP my dude. Halfway home.

octobeard, Saturday, 26 June 2021 20:11 (four years ago)

Damn, RIP. There probably would not be a Daveed Diggs without him.

Octobeard, Blazing Arrow was a favorite of mine too. Sorry cause I wasn’t trying to dis Davis there, hope it didn’t seem that way.

I saw Blackalicious once on a Quannum tour with DJ Shadow, Lateef, Lyrics Born and a few others. Gab really stuck out, though, as a savant among savants.

Man I haven't listened to any of these tracks for a loooong time:

RIP, this guy was an immense talent. Sadly I never followed his solo work too closely, but I was a huge fan of the first three Blackalicious records. Nia is probably the better album overall, but Blazing Arrow was my starting point and I spent so much time with that record that it will always be my favorite. I need to revisit Imani one of these days, I remember not being wowed by that one.

Was getting really annoyed to see how many people were shouting him out on Twitter by posting fucking Harry Potter's take on "Alphabet Aerobics" though.

This was probably my introduction to Gift of Gab. Still one of my favorite of his verses.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:35 (four years ago)

man viborg! i haven't heard that in probably fifteen years! that is some rare blackalicious action — props for the reminder!

also holy hell — the latyrx album was some O_O shit when it came out.

i know a lot of people didn't like their turn towards a more radio friendly sound, but i was genuinely excited the first time i heard "powers." while it was a blatant attempt to have a hit, it felt like a natural and organic progression for them. i really admired gab's attempts to stop being a preacher and just lead by example. he was really was trying to be the change that he wanted to see.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR15tl4l7_g

it never was a hit and i always felt some bitterness about that.

things repeat forever and there never is a remedy (Austin), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:49 (four years ago)

Cheers. Powers is solid too, I see no reason to hate it. Better than J5’s pop turn was. Although if you’re bitter about your fav indie act not breaking thru…well, I guess we all choose our own battles.

Very nice selection from Pres Keyes there too, I hadn’t heard that one before thanks.

I didn’t really see much on Twitter about him passing but then most of my feed in UK electronic artists, and US political accounts. I really need to find some more good hip hop accounts to follow — any suggestions, or if y’all post about hip hop you feel like sharing your ID?

I’m @danielviborg. (If any one does check on me, plz to disregard any minor drama I may have been involved in recently. I don’t post that much anyway.)

"the ride of your life"

i swear, since he passed i don't think i've understood him more thoroughly. man. this one has become monolithic for me over the past little while.

incredible sample source, as well. somehow makes the songs feel like extensions of each other; like a binary star in song form.

Missed hearing this. Did love Melodica in its extended form back in 96. Seemed to be stacks of those around cheap at one point.
Picked up a few of the later cds a few years later. & saw the band in Galway then Dublin. Great stuff.
Loved his cadence when he rapped. Wanted to hear what he would have sounded like over a full live band.

Stevolende, Sunday, 1 January 2023 08:40 (three years ago)

So sorry to hear he died. R.i.p
