So I just bought "Candi Staton"

It's a CD compilation of her stuff for FAME records, I think. I heard it playing in a local record store and it is unbelievably great. I always thought she was a disco singer, which I guess she was later, but this is just a collection of brilliant Muscle Shoals soul songs. Anyone heard this?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Saturday, 15 May 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

have all the singles and yes it is great it's finally available. IF only they'd put out the other FAME stuff as well.
Sweet Feeling kills me.

rumple, Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

very nice, haven't played it for anyone yet who hasn't gone totally bonkers for it.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought it on LP last week, actually. It's a beauty.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeh, "You Got The Love" is awesome, especially the arpeggiated lead synth and the bassline.

*silence*

*looks around*

I'll get me coat.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Teah, this is fab. I've played it even more than the Yes reissues!

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Sweet Feeling" gets to me, too. I found some of the Fame singles after first hearing "Young Hearts Run Free." I still love that, too, but what a revealation!

Anybody know if Candi is kin to Dakota Staton?

briania (briania), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'You Don't Love Me No More'
Freedom is Beyond The Door'
'How Can I Put Out The Flame'
'Heart On A String'

My favourites on that compilation. Check for her later song 'Victim' too if you haven't heard it.

W Tinasky, Friday, 21 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

In the mid-80s, Stateside issued an LP which was half Candi Staton (compiled from the Fame recordings now reissued) and half Bettye Swann (compiled from her two Capitol LPs, "The Soul View Now!" and "Don't you Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me?"). It's marvellous from beginning to end.

I've been chasing after these recordings ever since and have had virtually no luck, with the exception of finding one Candi Staton LP ("Candi", which I believe was her last for Rick Hall) and one or two stray singles. I very much hope someone gets on the case of reissuing those Bettye Swann recordings. How difficult can it be?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

does this have what you're looking for, Tim?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly no: it's Bet's Capitol rather than Money recording's I'm after. I have a single or two of hers on Money and they're just fine without ever hitting the heights of the half an LP's worth of this other stuff I have.

The Capitol stuff is the best Southern Soul I've heard, which is kind of surprising since it wasn't recorded in the South.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bettye Swann's Today I Started Loving You Again (from 1972 or so?) is one of my favourite songs.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes that's the stuff I'm on about (I had a little jag of collecting different versions of that song: I have six or seven I think, my fave being Bettye's, though WIllie Nelson's sticks out as a favourite too).

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I only know hers. It's on the Our Turn To Cry comp, I think.

Ahh.. soul Bettys/Bettyes/Betties.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been overly fond of the spelling "Bettye" but I suppose the way people spell their own names is none of my business.

Betty Lavette is the best of all, I think. She too appended an additional 'e' on some of her later recordings (the Motorcity ones, I think).

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

was this released on a french label or something? because this cd was reviewed in all the french papers: le monde, les inrocks, liberation...

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Candi Staton one? No, it was on Honest Jon's Records, West London.

(Some French label did put out an amazing LP of Betty Lavette's Atlantic / Atco recordings a few years back, most of which were previously unreleased, though I realise no-one except me was talking about her.)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that the one shared with Carol Fran or something else?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(all this is a hint for Tim to make me a compilation of southern soul)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

No Nick that one was Calla recordings from (I think) the mid-60s and called something like Blue Soul Belles. I haven't heard it. The one I'm talking about is called "Souvenirs" and is on Art & Soul, I think. It has a very gospelly version of "Heart of Gold" on it, which is probably the track I like least on the record.

I'll see what I can do re: comp. I have my record collection back! But I don't have a record player that works yet.

IIRC from examing the CD case, it's licensed to HJ's for UK release, yes. But may well have been licensed to other labels elsewhere in Europe.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so I just ordered the new CS comp from Amazon. I was going to buy it in Virgin but it was £16.99 and I rebelled.

The Pepe Bradock Mixes of "Do Your Duty" and "Evidence" on Honest Jon's are mindblowing.

Instead of starting a new thread on this, I thought I'd post this news bit on Bettye Swann (who gets mention upthread) which I read at dustygroove.com under upcoming releases:

Bettye Swann -- Bettye Swann (reissue) . . . CD . . . Summer 2004
A treasure of late 60s southern soul from the great Bettye Swann -- 22 tunes cut for Capitol between 1968 and 1970 after she jumped from the indie Money Records! Sadly, the move didn't turn Bettye into the major star Capitol no doubt expected to arise -- and these fantastic tracks were largely unappreciated at the time. This release marks the very first worthy issue of most of this material, thanks to Honest Jon's -- who did a similarly wonderful job rescuing some of the best material ever recorded by Bettye's contemporary Candi Staton! There's an achingly great southern soul feel to these tunes, which range from fragile soul ballads with sweet harmonies and poundingly righteous stompers. The feel is just loose enough, with roomy arrangements that leave plenty of space for Bettye's sweet vocals, but still with the ability to tighten up and pound at the crack of a whip! Masterful lost soul -- and a joy to experience with a reverent reissue! Tracks include "Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me?)", "I'm Lonely For You", "Don't Touch Me", "Little Things Mean A Lot", "No Faith No Love", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Tell It Like It Is", "Today I Started Loving You Again" and lots more!

Jonathan (Jonathan), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen the Candi Staton one for about 8.99 in the HMV sale. How do you rate it, N? Up there with Lulu?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i might buy this this week...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's no Lulu, but it's good, yes. I think hearing it all at once was a bit much for me but there is some great stuff on it. I guess I think her later disco stuff is undervalued while this is a bit overvalued. But it could just be because I've overdosed a bit on 60s/early 70s deep soul lately.

Looking forward to the Bettye Swann Capitol set.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Young Hearts Run Free" is clearly one of the better disco records.

I got the Bettye Swann set and had the most amazing real shivers up the spine moments twice (these are rare for me). First on her delicate version of 'Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye', then on the quite transcendental last track 'Traces'.

The version of 'Today I Started Loving You Again' on it is more uptempo and not really as good as the 1971 one I had before.

Okay. so my boss is sad today and one thing he really wants is an mp3 of "You Got The Love". Would anyone out there be kind enough to post a yousendit that I could surprise him with? It would really make his day!

thank you!

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

can i just mail it to you general?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

sure!

Yeh, "You Got The Love" is awesome, especially the arpeggiated lead synth and the bassline

Isn't that the Jamie Principle/Frankie Knuckles ripoff one? Or is that one of her other songs?

Have any of you heard the Willie Hightower reissue which seems to be part of the same Honest Jon's series?

I picked it up when it came out around February of this year, and it's excellent. His voice reminds me of Sam Cooke at times, and the album even includes his response to Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come (which here is titled "Time Has Brought About a Change"). Also, if you like the song You Send Me at all, then you're in for a treat with his cover of it.

nice track. i only know her disco stuff tho. did anyone see that muscle shoals doc? kind of terrible but the footage and music in the first half was pretty awes, like up to about the stones. rest was dreadful though, kind of inadvertently kills the myth of its amazing sound or whatever. also a couple weirdly racist moments like where the son of sun records guy recounts a story about his father looking out onto the cotton fields & having a eureka moment: "their music, so... soulful" *dollar signs pop out of eyes*

flopson, Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

for like the past year i thought her name was candi stanton, and even thought the movie poster had a typo on it

*listens to "victim" 100 more times*

Y'all know a more complete overview of the Fame stuff was released on Kent in 2011? 2 CDs. Improved sound. Unreleased tracks. You know what to do.
