Does Ricardo Villalobos remind anyone else of Carl Graig?

Dexter, I think, could have been written by Carl Craig in a universe right next door to ours.

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm, and then it could be placed next to 'Science Fiction' on Landcruising? ;)

Actually, I didn't make that connection. 'Dexter' to me sounds like a dubversion of The Cure's 'A Forest'. :)

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 May 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dexter" is by far the most melodic moment on Alcachofa though - I don't think the rest sounds much like Craig. More like Monolake trying to make tribal house.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 16 May 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

been listening to this record a ton the last few days. It sounds really great on headphones walking two miles through light rain to Comiskey Park to catch a White Sox day game, I can tell you that much. Almost revived this thread the other day, in fact. Love it, love it, love it. The music is so rich, the sound field so deep and vibrant, teeming with life. Beautiful stuff. Really one of those rare records that only comes along once or twice a year.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 16 May 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the best way to hear it is on headphones with the sound turned down quite low, I've found.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 16 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I really love the fact that the tracks segue into each other, but very discreetly, so that it works as an "album" - a collection of generally accomplished and exciting tracks - but also as a sort of mix, something that in fact builds up in momentum. The first two tracks are just amazing, and then that deep rumbling bass checks in for tracks three and four.... and so on.. Yeah, just a really accomplished work. Bravo.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 16 May 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i've mentioned here before just how much i love "dexter". i really do. btw who's carl graig? HAR HAR

I think my favorite thing about Villalobos is his patience. Of course I say that about movies I like and people think I'm excusing their monotony.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 May 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the similarities are that they both tend to write using unique variations of song-based idioms even though the tracks take awhile to sink it that way (well, craig is much more obvious in this regard, but still). they also both do the 14 minute epic thing...

i'm really bummed that villalobos won't be at mutek this year.

his patience

Don't worry, I know exactly what you mean. He does have a way with a sort of long-term suspense.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet it would sound great on that walk, broheems. i'm thinking of the 2 mile radius around comiskey and the area north and west would probably be perfect for the combination of music and urban environment (for lack of better words at the moment)

'Dexter' to me sounds like a dubversion of The Cure's 'A Forest'. :)

hehe, i like this.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

very dubversive

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i do wish there was a few more more melodic moments like dexter on the album, but I do adore the whole thing. Theogenese is my second favorite moment on the album so far.

The whole thing is restrained, but forceful, if that makes any sense.

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

in a word, no.

stirmonster, Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how about hard and soft?

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

silly and serious?

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

NO!!! (haha i think stirrie was replying to thread question, hector)

he reminds me more of danny tenaglia-gone-micro-techno these days more than anything else, really

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

do not mention danny tenaglia on a microhouse thread! or carl craig!!!

ILM (Ronan), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"danny tenaglia-gone-micro-techno"

wow, now that is a connection that I would have never made. I wonder if there is a Masters at Work equivilant in micro?

Maybe Luomo?

Can I mention Juan Atkins on a micro thread Ronan?

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! sorry hector. i wasn't saying you weren't making sense. as tracer pointed out, i was answering the thread question.

i haven't heard any danny t***glia for eons but am intrigued as to what he is doing now after reading yr post tracer.

a micro masters at work might be ark.

stirmonster, Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I just want everyone to know how much I lurrrrve this record (both sides) (and the goofy picture in the middle. You can just tell he's wearing sandals):

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

does ricardo villalobos remind anyone of brandon block?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

from that photo, i can now believe that his reputation as a party monster is deserved!

stirmonster, Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think danny's doing a lot of deep-housifying remix work, mainly, but i don't really know. i'm thinking of his DJing really, which manages to move from discoish stuff to really dark minimal tracks w/nice organic percussion on top of them. it's a lot more get yer ya-yas out than villalobos.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

nice!

Its kinda cool the way techno has become so... friendly!

I mean I look at that picture and think "yea I'll share my spliff with that guy". Looking at mid 90s pics of richie hawtin I always got the feeling that although I liked his tunes he would probably say something really assy and elitist if I was to actually talk to him.

and of course Derrick May personified this.

hector (hector), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

there are still a whole load of cranks, surely!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

just look at this place!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my fave villalobos quote is "i'll have time to be sad when i'm dead"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah i remember that one too! i think we have mr. sherburne to thank

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 16 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
not really. Does Carl Craig ever look happy?

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

or Carl Graig for that matter.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

i've seen lots of smiling pictures of the man.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

when he played Dublin last he said one thing and one thing only "I'm telling you now I will only speak to the man who is signing my cheque".

charming.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

haha

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

i used to know him quite well and he was super friendly, charming, funny, jovial and very unbusinesslike (he did a remix for a project i was putting together for free). but i haven't seen him in years and heard that he had beome a bit serious. that cheque comment is crazy!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

don't listen to the little rooky

pogue_mahone, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

for fun, could you try and spell the name of the first dj in this thread? a tip: it's harder than rookie.
