Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

For a second I was wondering what the hell those earliest singles were doing higher than Bananarama and Ric Astley in their pomp. Not to mention Dead or Alive, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: WRESTLEMANIA--WWF Superstars 3/ 4/1993

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They wrote the Wrestlemania theme music?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not the Wrestlemania theme tune, the novelty song featuring the WWE stars going "Woaaaaahhhh, woaaaahhhh, Wrestlemania, fighting to survive", whilst the verses were various grap-superstars trash talking you down hard. "I'm Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and when I get in the ring, I'm going to show you how to get beaten up".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"What Do I Have To Do?" is, for me, their finest hour. Which makes it one of the greatest things ever.

"S.S. Paparazzi" is cheeky and prescient:at a time when most of their acts should have been so lucky (sorry, couldn't resist) as to be papped, SAW foresaw the Hello culture of the next 15 years and gave it the Vees.

"I'd Rather Jack" is Classic, obv. Death to Yr Parents.

Apart from the last stuff they did with Kylie, (Rhythm Of Love is way my favourite of her albums) I like them best when they're being most flip/punk. The earlier stuff with established artists is good, but their own creations suit them best.

Destroy? Well I think the world can live without Pat and Mick or WWF records. And I always thought Big Fun were a bit wanky, for some reason. Oh yeah, and Sonia as well. Too Mumsy by half.

73 41 LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE/MR SLEAZE--Bananarama 10/10/1987 3

Look no further for pop perfection with archers and lemonade.

Johnney B, Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

SAY I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE--Princess
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP--Rick Astley
THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL--Donna Summer
WHEN I'M GOOD AND READY--Sybil

Those are my favourites.

It's funny seeing names like Brilliant, Pepsi & Shirley and Haywoode (I'd completely forgotten her) in there. Interesting..they had 4 goes with Brilliant before giving up.

David (David), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll Keep on Loving You - Princess & Heartache - Pepsi and Shirley, are both rather good.

I've yet to hear enough of these really, though many from 88-93 will be somewhere in my distant memory.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any producers with a recognisable "Sound" that have a comparable record of success in the UK? I assume, say, ChinniChap scored a lot less Top 5s.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Hatch...? Though again, it's doubtful that he had so *many* Top 5s, say. Trevor Horn may be closer...

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

God, SAW really bombed out towards the end, didn't they?

Can anyone confirm or deny that 198 136 HOT HOT HOT--Pat & Mick 15/ 5/1993 47 is actually Pat Sharpe and Mick Brown covering the "Ole, ole, ole ole, feeling hot hot hot" song?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That is an unbelievable list. Georgie Fame worked with SAW?!

57 32 LET IT BE--Ferry Aid 4/ 4/1987 1

was this to raise money so that bryan ferry could have drink and gambling funds in Monte Carlo?

I love the Bananarama stuff - i have that one single where swain/jolley and SAW both take a crack at the same song, but i can't recall what it is. "More Than Physical" maybe? There is a true Taking Sides.

You Spin Me Round might be the tops up there though. As obvious a choice as it is. I'm not gonna destroy anything though, cuz most of that stuff never even made it over here and I've never heard them.

No wait, destroy "Help" with Bananarama and nanenoonoo. THAT I have heard.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell, Divine worked with SAW!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"You Spin Me Round" is classic

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, and the first two Mel n' Kim singles are marvellous

it's a shame Donna Summer had a minorish hit with the avant-pop 'Dinner With Gershwin' but then had bigger hits with possibly the weakest material of her career thanks to SAW

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Judas Priest recorded 3 tracks with SAW in about 1986 that never saw the light of day. I really want to hear them.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That is exciting. I would also like to hear them.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

One suspects they are deep, deep in a vault somewhere, under lock and key, guarded by the Metallian.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm surprised they did 'Wrestlemania'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a tie between the two Rick Astley singles and DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 17 May 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

There's one missing: the 12" mix of "Young Hearts In Germany" by U-BahnX. Early 85, very much in the vein of Dead Or Alive.

As well as the obvious big hits, search:
BACK IN MY ARMS (ONCE AGAIN)--Hazell Dean
THEY SAY IT'S GONNA RAIN--Hazell Dean
LOVE IS WAR--Brilliant (somewhat SOS Band-ish)
IN LOVE WITH LOVE--Debbie Harry

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't have four goes with Brilliant so much as WEA tried four times to get hits off the one album that SAW were hired to produce (also NB that Mike and Matt weren't writing the songs on this). Still, the money helped set up PWL and Drummond & Cauty used the work as a learning experience to apply to future projects.

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

.. and their last two top twenty hits were Bill Tarney (Jack Duckworth) and Wrestlemania?

"Lousy celebrity.... Makes Record... SMILES AH!!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Wilson wanted SAW to produce New Order, but unsurprisingly this was vetoed by the band. Would've been interesting to hear what that would sound like to.

The O'chi Brown song Whenever You Need Somebody is classic. As is Happening All Over Again by Lonnie Gordon.

I always get Lonnie Gordon confused with Frances Nero for some reason!

How come SAW produced a lot of Haywoode songs I've never heard of but didn't produce Roses???

four years pass...

The O'chi Brown song Whenever You Need Somebody is classic.

Obsessed with this song at the moment, the Rick Astley cover is decent too.
