gygax that was beautiful.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear to god i almost clicked on fave flick before remembering that it was, in fact, a still image. I am officially brain-dead.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you seen the latest one? Mary-Kate digs that Ryan Adams.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew this would be an Alex in NYC post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife actually got me to like that moon and antarctica album. I had never even heard them before.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

because he's married?

Something about the phrasing too.

Ha Ha! Hey, they are well on there way. Besides, all teen billionares love Boredoms.

HAHAHAHAHHAHA... <3s -> JW

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoshimi, they don't believe me, but you won't let those Olsens eat me.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What else could I put on for Alex in NYC other than Killing Joke?

Also what should I put on one for Ned other than MBV?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

can you make their fave flicks Caligula and Last Tango In Paris?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

those poor adorable teen billionares. I'm usually so good about not making fun of them.

Mary-Kate and Ashley's hip picks: Clam Lappers and Sonic the Hedgehog

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

she's skin and bones i tell you. I'm worried.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

can you imagine being 18 years old and seeing a picture of your bony back on the cover of a national magazine. Even for teen billionares that's gotta hurt. they are gonna drive her to heroin.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

JW:

i would love to see a Wolf Eyes/Animal Collective one. That would be "white-hot"!

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The best thing was I was in the Rite-Aid drug store the other day, and in the checkout they had the tabloid with the bony back, and right next to it a magazine with the olsens on the cover and the cover story was teen weight loss tips.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about putting the Wolf Eyes record on Sub Pop on one.

Also: Karlheinz Stockhausen / Kevin Drumm maybe?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Night Time"
"Q: Are We Not Men?"

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like that Modest Mouse single too. The song that is apparently going to be the second single ("Ocean Breathes Salty") is even better. The record is pretty good all around, actually. I was very pleasantly surprised - I've always liked some Modest Mouse songs here and there, but this was way better than I ever could have expected from them.

FAVE FUCK

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I really only know their major label stuff well, "Float On" is easily one my favorite Modest Mouse songs ever (right up there with "Brilliant Disguise" and "So Much Beauty In Dirt").

C'mon, it's like "Once In A Lifetime" covered by the Pixies! What's not to like!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Float On" is absolutely, fantastically brilliant. Not so sure about "Ocean Breathes Salty," though, Matthew... But OTM about the new record vs spotty older material.

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

...Among my favorite singles this year. It's a balance between Tom Waits and cheap disco beats that doesn't sound silly or contrived. Also, it's one of the best rock vocal performances I've heard in a while (though admittedly I don't pay attention to rock vocals).

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 16 May 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

petpretua is going to break modest mouse just like he did with lcd.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 16 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I caught about five minutes of the Olsens on SNL last night. One of them does look dangerously thin.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 May 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if Mary-Kate or Ashley would be willing to post on the Rolling 2004 Metal Thread. I'd really like their thoughts on that new Killswitch Engage album.

TomB (TomB), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Modest Mouse..are virtual unknowns in the UK.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not not licking toads.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
This song rips off "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Same key and same exact tempo even.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

are you sure?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

uh lotsa songs are in the same key and tempo and sound nothing alike.
rip-off? nah. a much better accusation would be "all those people that you know" ripping off tom waits' "singapore" they sound almost exactly the same.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and MM song is called "Devil's Workday", not what I said.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the same tempo, key and nearly the same melody are on Rod Stewart's "Attractive Female Wanted." I HOPE that its a rip-off.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

actually it's a little slower but it has the same lope

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's quite slower but the vocal melody is really similar. so float on = rhythm from SBS and melody from AFW.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for clearing it up, fellas! I heard them both on the radio within a few minutes of each other and it was striking.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The radio volume was really low and I thought this was that Franz Ferdinand song for a minute...

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The drums are sort of similar..

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only does it sound like Franz Ferdinand, but the video is totally ripping off the one for 'Take Me Out' in its style. I actually liked MM more before they started this totally blatant bandwagon-jumping (though admittedly it's probably the record company's idea rather than the band's).

Mog, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

my girlfriend loves the album, i hate it. she wont be convinced that the single sounds like franz' take me out.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I can just see Isaac cackle as he tells the guy to play U2 while he sings Rod Stewart. "We're gonna make a million, baby!"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Float On" and "Float On" video >>>>>>>>>> "Take Me Out" and "Take Me Out" video

What bandwagon is Modest Mouse jumping on? The "good pop song with decent backbeat" bandwagon? Since when is having a decent rhythm section some kind of evil trend? It's common sense, really. It's about fucking time.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This song (along with The Killers et al) sounds so much like the Talking Heads I nearly crashed my car when I first heard it. And I wasn't even driving at the time. Everything about it is 'Heads - the yelp, the tone, the melody ("Nothing But Flowers"?), the whole nein yards.

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The next MM single has a guitar line that's very late-period The Edge.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they really should of broke up.

kephm, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats the next Modest Mouse single Mathew?

Not only does it sound like Franz Ferdinand, but the video is totally ripping off the one for 'Take Me Out' in its style. I actually liked MM more before they started this totally blatant bandwagon-jumping (though admittedly it's probably the record company's idea rather than the band's).

There are about 7 or 8 videos in this style I've seen on MTV the last few months and they are ALL stealing from Michael Jackson's "Leave Me Alone"

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

um, is there any possibility these things have the same director? Don't know, myself. I mean in the '90s folks weren't ripping each other off so much as frequently hiring Matt Mahurin.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I turned on conan o'brien the other day and saw some band playing a song and had to wait to see who it was at the end because it was one of the worst songs I'd ever heard. And it was Modest Mouse playing Float On! My ongoing hate of them continues to be justified.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i predict this song will sell a whole lot of minivans.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The next single is "Ocean Breathes Salty." That's the song they played on Conan, not "Float On."

"Ocean Breathes Salty" is definitely my favorite Modest Mouse song.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Take Me Out" was directed by Jonas Odell, and "Float On" was directed by Christopher Mills.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't sound anything like Franz Ferdinand, it's boring drifter crap. Also the lyric is incredibly dumb "if things get heavy we'll all float on!"

"Thinking too much makes your head hurt"

"Let's make ice cream for the boys"

"If things get heavy we'll all float on!"

"Life is life, la-la la-la-la"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody's grumpy

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

No no that's me laughing!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

mainly at the fact I got the album to review as my first bit of work in 3 months last week, after missing out on orbital's last gig ever, and a whole load of other records, they oddly gave me modest mouse's album.

it was actually not as crap as the single.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am of the opinon that the single is the only good thing on the album.
