Defend the Indefensible: that goddamn "I'll Tumble For You" song

You know the one I mean. It's by Culture Club I think. They're usually pretty inoffensive to these ears but today I was shopping and that song starts pummelling my ears, and I had to cut my trip short.

A slight aside: I've noticed that every single time I'm in a store or restaurant or some kind of commercial space where soft rock is playing, a Rod Stewart song comes on.

"I'll Tumble 4 Ya" is the correct title.

I think you must just hate fun.

"I'll Tumble 4 Ya" vs "King of Wishful Thinking"

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 17 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Defend: Use of "tumble" in a lyric - tumble is a fun word!
Are there any other lyrics besides the chorus? Boy george did a cute tumble hand motion in the video. The song sucks.

Defend the Indefensible: that goddamn "I'll Tumble For You" song

It was put to damn good use in "Lesson One: The Payoff Mix" by Double Dee and Steinski.

1. It's a good pop song.
2. Rap section, then "It's love in stereo...."
3. Horn madness at end.
4. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" could have been anything, really; "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" was full-on gayness and thereforew awesome.
5. Adam Ant/second line drumbeat.
6. "I'll be your baby, I'll be your score" ROUGH TRADE
7. Its remake, "It's a Miracle," is pretty boss. Also related: "Favourite Shirt" by Haircut 100, "Shoot Your Shot" by James Brown, "Fire on High" by Electric Light Orchestra, and "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" by the Four Seasons.
8. This song, running through my head, helped me run a really good 400M in an indoor track meet in Moscow, Idaho, in 1983.
9. Not-liking Culture Club is the OLD not-liking-fun. It's like not-liking sex with an anonymous stranger one night in the basement of a club, only to find out that it's your friend's older sister who is really hot from the right angle.
10. "King of Wishful Thinking" blows.

Go West had better songs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(Better songs than "King of Wishful Thinking" -- they most emphatically did NOT have better songs than Culture Club.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest i confused go west with boy meets girl for a sec there, i still stand by my assertion though

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haikunym do you hate "don't think twice, it's alright" too????

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, but if a person HAD to rank those early 80's Culture Club hits, put them in order, like, are you saying "I Fumble Tore Ya" would be one of the top 5? I'd have to disagree.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

look Boy George isn't in any shape to kick our asses anymore, it's safe to come out and say that this song blows.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"i tumble 4 ya" isn't top five culture club (i suspect) but culture club had more than five great songs so lo-di-do.

was he ever in that kind of shape?

Buster (mokey), Monday, 17 May 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

> was he ever in that kind of shape?

I was talking to my uncle over the weekend at a birthday party. The DJ put on Karma Chameleon, and my uncle reminisced about living around the corner from Boy George in London in '82, and how he'd spot him in the local cornershop every couple of days. Even though he would have only popped out to buy a few teabags, George was always in full-on geisha regalia. Anyway, according to my uncle, George was a surprisingly hefty guy - so yeah, I guess he would have kicked your ass if you'd hated on his debut single.

It provided fodder for a memorable Zappa spoof. Hey, "spoof-fodder"!
