That Mars Volta cover is just...words fail me. I can't imagine what it sounds like,

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually that Mars Volta album cover's very Hip Gnosis/Pink Floyd-ish. Not really all that odd since there are so many album covers in that style.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's very appropriate for the music.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what makes the Joni Mitchell cover the oddest is that it's by fuckin' Joni Mitchell, of all people. From Zappa or Beefheart or the Residents or whomever, you expect the odd. But Joni Mithchell? What the fuck?

I still maintain that that Joni Mitchell one is far and away the oddest, but I've always found this rather frankly bizarre as well..

What's ugliest about the Blind Faith cover - the girl or the godawful cropping?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

...Blind Faith: that's the topless-girl one, Aaron. The replacement cover (after the first one was banned) probably took 'em 2 minutes to design and is far worse:

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny thing about the Phil Collins album -- when I first saw it in a Virgin Megastore when it came out, I couldn't help thinking about how much Phil looks like Ian Mackaye, at least on that cover.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

how come that blind faith album can still be shown (at least in britain) with the topless girl? is it not child porn?

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A picture of a nude child isn't the same as child porn.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

From the entertaining coffee-table book 100 Best Album Covers:

When asked what she thought her fee should be for moldeling, Mariora Goschen said she wanted a young horse, but instead she received 40 pounds from the Robert Stigwood Organisation, Eric Clapton's management company. Mariora Goschen: "The nudity didn't bother me. I hardly noticed I had breasts. I was mad about animals and much taken up with family and friends. But now, when people tell me they can remember what they were doing when they first saw the cover and the effect it had on them, I'm thrilled to bits. By the way, I'm still waiting for Eric Clapton to ring me about the horse."

Judging from the Hirax cover, there must be more to the HUmpty-Dumpty story that meets the eye.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, did you ever consider that the guy on Paranoid's cover - a "warrior" - would've been more appropriate for an LP called War Pigs? I've always suspected just that: They originally intended to call it War Pigs (Side One, Track One of course), but decided to change it after "Paranoid" became a surprise hit single.

Hey, it COULD'VE happened that way. Who knows?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I think you're entirely correct....but the cover is no less bizarre (and rather low budget-looking).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That guy on the cover sure does look paranoid, though, so the name change from "War Pigs" to "Paranoid" wasn't too much of a stretch.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy actually explained that exact genesis for the LP cover (it was originally to be called "War Pigs," and the guy is dressed as a pig) in a recent Rolling Stone interview.
