TS: Coldplay Vs. Modest Mouse ???

Can these two bands be compared?

They both do a similar(ish, pushing it a bit here, I know!) sound; 'altern-easy-listening-hooky-nocock-pop-rock'.

They both seem to appeal to girlfriends! Am I right in thinking Modest Mouse are quite "big" in the states, much in the same way Coldplay are "big" over here?

There seems to be similar attitudes from music-geeky people over here towards Coldplay as there are from US music-geeky people towards MM.

They've both got that College/Student music stigma.

I have to favour Modest Mouse on this one, just cuz they've released way more stuff and they arn't shoved down my throat everytime I turn the radio on. Or maybe its just the few MM songs that made it onto some particulary good 'summmer driving fun' compilations that I remember. (I'll admit, I've never made it through a whole MM album.)

Not really. Modest Mouse have more of a hardcore influence, in his screaming, and occasionally get Tom Waits-y weird.

Not really. A kind of big indie rock band, just now starting to have a video played on MTV late at night. By no means "big."

Yeh, I get the hardcore connection, but since The Moon and Antartica this always seems much less like a connection to his hardcore roots than one of his trademark voices. (I love what he does with his voice btw, especially the Ugly Casanova stuff, the 'Barney from Simpsons' voice especially). Plus pop music is full of screamy stuff like wot Issac does nowadays, see the new Pink tour!

Right.. for some reason I'd assumed that they'd suddenly got the big "best band in the world, but not quite as best as coldplay who are the new radiohead who were the best band in the world" label and America had gone MM mad.

So I take it the MM 'backlash' has more to do with the reviews they've been getting over the last few years?

Most of the Modest Mouse fans I know prefer the pre-Moon+Antarctica stuff. But I really don't know that many people who watch MTV late at night. Which is a shame.

'altern-easy-listening-hooky-nocock-pop-rock' seems a really bogus description for MM. I reckon they have plenty of cock.

Anyway, the answer is Coldplay because i like to hear them on the radio

I'm still completely shellshocked by this insane revisionist history of Modest Mouse I keep seeing lately, this attempt to totally paint them as some kind of toothless, safe alterna-pop band...i mean, i've got much less against Coldplay than most people, but it's still an insult for MM to be compared to those guys...their back catalogue is exquisite, and not just that, but the new album is highly underrated and excellent, just everything you would want out of a mid-life indie band, real hooks, sharp lyrics, and genuine passion, very comparable in those respects to Ted Leo's latest, though not in terms of sound necessarily

my guess is that this all has to do with the van commercial, whether ppl are willing to admit it or not.

I say this every time Modest Mouse comes up, but "Lonesome Crowded West" is a perfect album.

I've always been surprised that, of all the mid-90s indie fave, Modest Mouse would get a major label deal and a modicum of popularity. Isaac Brock's vocals seem so not-ready-for-primetime to me. Anyway, though, "Lonesome Crowded West" is an A+ and the rest of their album fall in the B/B- range.

Chris Martin is douchebag. He named his daughter Apple.
