Lemmy and Jon dis The Darkness
"I hate them. They suck," says Bon Jovi leader.
OTHE BACKLASH AGAINST THE Darkness appears to have begun with the UK sensations feeling the wrath of some of their fellow stars and even being accused of exagerrating their record sales.
"I hate The Darkness. They suck," says Jon Bon Jovi, "They're trying to mimic Spinal Tap."

Not so long ago, Lemmy concurred with JBJ's verdict, stating: "They're a novelty group like The Barron Knights. A cabaret act. they should be on at Wigan Casino."

Buster (mokey), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they're just jealous of his voice

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I read somewhere else that The Darkness wanted to cover 'You Give Love a Bad Name' and that's what prompted the Bon Jovi statement.

Buster (mokey), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bon Jovi in accusing someone else of sucking shockah

BRITNEY GO HOMO

Britney Spears has been spotted walking hand-in-hand with another woman - after spending five hours at a notorious gay nightspot.

The pop princess giggled as she left the club in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the sexy brunette, along with Britney's new boyfriend, Kevin Federline, and another man.

An onlooker said: "Britney was all over the brunette in the cab on the way back to the hotel. They were laughing and giggling and Britney made sure she sat next to the brunette, not Kevin. They all went upstairs together at the hotel.

"Lucky Kevin if anything happened. It must be every man's fantasy to be alone in a hotel room with Britney Spears and another woman."

The threesome had earlier spent a wild night at the Pan Club - the biggest gay bar in Denmark, where Britney is currently on her Onyx Hotel tour - with the sexy singer performing erotic dance routine in the club's VIP area.

A security guard  told Britain's News of the World newspaper: "Britney certainly wanted to have a wild time and didn't care who saw her."

Another onlooker noted how close Britney and the mystery girl were, saying: "Britney was on her boyfriend's knee and this girl was sitting next to them. She and Britney were giggling all the time. At one point Britney stood up and started dancing round the table."

Yes, we get the idea. Britney is a sexy old woman now.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

As if Motorhead have done anything half as good as that Darkness album in, like, the past twenty years or more. To hell with what Lemmy thinks. (At least Bon Jovi made a decent album in, um, 1987.)

chuck, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, have the darkness, like?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemmy's more pop than most, so he can't be accused of rockism at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

jaz coleman slated the dorkness in public at the Kerrang Awards last year.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

they'd have got bottled off at the Wigan Casino, much as they should be everywhere

chris (chris), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

word has it that Lemmy has since apologised as it was an out of context quote anyway.

as for : "accused of exagerrating their record sales"

well, anyone with access to CIN can answer that one straight away.
wouldn't that be an interesting game eh? find out what all those 'big name' and 'most important bands in the UK this week' band ACTUALLY sell?

i.p.j, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jealousy is only a feeling

Patrick Kinghorn, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

JBJ OTM!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness is silly bullshit that only exists because of jaded self-ironic hipsters and dumb trailerpark blonds - another band for the trashheap of history.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so incredibly jealous.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaded self-ironic what? Somethingsters? Dude, what's with the weird insider terminology?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"insider terminology"

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Nate I also loathe their receded hairline smug postmodernist scones. But both my girlfriend and my 4 yr old daughter disagree, and have urged me to buy the album. Sarah-Jane: "I like de way he sings".

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds good. Now give her some paint and let her decorate the house!

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i think bon jovi just hears the chill wind of colonisation somewhere within the darkness's vast fretwork, and has rejoinded on behalf of the downtrodden civilizations of the past, everywhere. i mean aren't they (bon jovi) the american version of U2, with everything that implies?

and lemmy is high.

duke roanoke, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

As if Motorhead have done anything half as good as that Darkness album in, like, the past twenty years or more.

holy shit, Chuck's done a 180 on Orgasmatron!!!!! Boo!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

NOBODY IS GOING TO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE DARKNESS SOON. AND THANK FUCK FOR THAT.

WTF WHO CARES?, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still never heard The Darkness.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE ONE LUCKY MAN.

WTF WHO CARES?, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Barron Knights? Wigan Casino? You call that a dis?

As for Anglikkka's most wanted:

THE DARKNESS will embark on a U.S. arena headlining tour in September and they've asked THE WILDHEARTS to be one of the tour's opening acts, according to an online posting by THE WILDHEARTS frontman Ginger. The bond between the two bands is so close, according to Ginger, "that the thought of them playing anywhere this year, without us playing before them seems preposterous. Australia, Europe, UK. Fuck man, if you see the name THE DARKNESS playing a gig in Brunei, then I'd turn up early to see the opening act if I were you."

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still never heard The Darkness.

Me neither! It's weird, but now I almost don't want to....the Darkness are like macaroni and cheese for me...I never tasted mac&cheese until I was 21!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

THE DARKNESS will embark on a U.S. arena headlining tour in September

This is like when (the) Verve thought they were huge in America after "Bittersweet Symphony."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"I hate them, they suck" - wow, he must have given that one some thought. At least Lemmy tried to say something interesting.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost
don't know. shit is beyond gold here. and the album is all singles. i would apply that more to franz ferdinand. though they might do better than we think too.

duke worse, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

shit is beyond gold here

Hm, did they outsell the Strokes? I'll be terribly amused if so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU SHALL NOT FIND AMUSEMENT!!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

doh i sux

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm even more amused!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

As if Motorhead have done anything half as good as that Darkness album in, like, the past twenty years or more.

1916, easily.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"No Voices in the Sky" was a pretty amazing song.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hm, did they outsell the Strokes?"

it's probably close to the first record's sales by now. i.e. just under platinum...
obv not both strokes' combined.

duke diamond, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I was referring more to the Strokes' followup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemmy accuses band of being novelty act.

Pot accuses kettle of being black.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

As Ian said, Lemmy's comments don't seem like off-track. I like the Darkness but I know what he's talking about.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Heh, I was referring more to the Strokes' followup."

i'm positive it has dusted THAT. probably two to three times as many.

duke busted, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That would make sense. Permission To Land has 4 or 5 singles in the UK by now, doesn't it? vs Room On Fire's 2 singles, one of which, although it's a fine song, is not exactly radio friendly.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I followed the laughter to Wigan Casino -- turns out it's a pretty cool place.

Ground zero for Northern Soul, known for it's all-night parties in the early 70s, hence the night owl mascot.

"vs Room On Fire's 2 singles, one of which, although it's a fine song, is not exactly radio friendly."

yeah i personally actually love les strokes. just so no one don't get me wrong. these are only facts i am presenting.

*waits for poster to reveal 'serious', 'novelty-free' music choices that will show Motorhead up for the flimsy jape they OBVIOUSLY fucking are*

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 20 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

As if Motorhead have done anything half as good as that Darkness album in, like, the past twenty years or more.

The Lemmy song ("Shake Your Blood") on the Probot record is great.

Russ, Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

I love Motorhead, but if you can't see the increasingly cartoonesque aspects of their schtick then I fear for yr sense of humour.

Then again, the only person who doesn't seem to find Lemmy amusing nowadays is Lemmy.
