or maybe 'blinded by the lights' vs 'weak become heroes'?

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it! It's so sad. The strobing stagger of that beat is so on point - slow panic at realizing that you're doing it big just to keep from going nuts, instead of to add rapture to an already satisfied you (like you used to).

Classic, possibly the only full-on classic on the album. Not as good as "Weak Become Heroes" though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason it reminds me of "Stan". ??? In a good way.

LC, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see how it could possibly be a dud. Not as good as Weak Become Heroes, but what is?

I was listening to it the other day and was struck again how brilliant he is at picking out the evocative little things that are so blindingly obivious but often unmentioned. Like Nicholson Baker or that 'most boring blog in the world' bloke.

Best thing the album

I also love the second half of Empty Cans (the surprise ending!) when the lyrics are more upbeat and there's just that piano change to the music.

And it always gets me when he finds the grand. "...and that's where it was in all it's glory - my thousand quid"

(hope i havent spoilt the plot!)

Silly me for thinking this was a Manfred Mann thread.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too. I still don't know what it's actually about.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry yourself

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate it when fucking pills taste of hairspray!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how he sees his girl cheating on him, but he's too messed up on drugs to notice. Best lyric: "I hate coming to the entrance just to get bars on my phone. You have no new messages. So why haven't they phoned? Menu. Write message. 'So where are you and Simone?' Send message. Dan's number. Where have they gone?"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

classic of course.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Streets song ever is classic.

Except for OPM's only real duffer, "Geezers Need Excitement."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wrapped up like a douche.
Total classic. The girl's voice is SO sad.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i have gotten halfway through the album and so far, this is my favorite track. i like the trance riff he pulls out, and, whether it was his intent or not, i like to think of the riff as belonging to the song itself, and also as the music in the club where the song takes place.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. The album is classic too. I listened to it the first time at work today and there were all these spots where i really got into it, a phrase he said made me really happy or sad or whatever, it played with my emotions the way a good movie should. I played it two more times in a row after the first spin!

Making a long-form narrative 'rap' album seems like such a grand idea, but it sounds home-made and intimate. And effortless.

Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Geezers Need Excitement" is fine.
The only dud Streets track is the one on the newie about gambling.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone ever explain 'who dares wins'? i mean really, what was that?

'blinded by the lights' is by far the best track on the new one i think, it stands out a mile. and 'not addicted' sounds good, i just think it's weak in terms of progressing the story. it seems totally superfluous.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic.

For the whoooosh sound as the pills kick in.
For the flawless evocation of being on your own in a busy club.
For Dan and Simone.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
The video for this shows Mike Skinner at a wedding reception. So did he ever say that it's a nightclub-set 'sequel' to 'Weak Become Heroes' or did everyone just presume so?

Classic if they did the video this way to change people's opinion of the song, but serious dud if it was only this way because to hire out a hotel conference room than the local Academy or Ikon.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 25 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The lyrics clearly set the song in a club. I saw the video a few weeks back. It's crap, and has no bearing on the song at all.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 25 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The lyrics clearly set the song in a club

That's the thing. I just read them and they don't, really.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 25 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

How did he not find the baggy, with his hand in my shoe?
Way too close for me, ah well at least they allowed me through.
Should be a good night in here, Ramo in the main room,
People keep pushing me though, no reception on the phone.

Not even in Birmingham do they have bouncers on the door doing body searches at wedding receptions.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 25 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"For the whoooosh sound as the pills kick in."

Yes! And then those very light double-time beats in the background, almost like a helicopter in the distance - amazing! It's a very Underworld effect actually, but done fantastically well.
