The station’s controller Andy Parfitt has said he is attempting to broaden the scope of the specialist shows on the station, hoping to appeal to more people.

He told The Independent newspaper: "All of those shows appeal to particular musical communities, I'm really pleased that they have credibility within these specific communities, but I think the job of Radio 1 - given that we are a national broadcaster - is that we can't just preach to the converted.

"What I'm talking about is trying to arrange the universe of Radio 1 specialists in such a way that it matches people's lifestyles and moods. Frankly, there will always be some compromises because there are a limited number of slots and everyone would like more time."

According to the reports, Zane Lowe, who presents the alternative music show, will increase his hours on the station to 12 per week.

Will this mean that the specialist shows will be diluted XFM style?
And does this spell the beginning of the end of the Peel show?
I wouldnt be surprised if he ends up with a graveyard shift within a few years. I can't imagine him appealing to a wider audience nor him even attempting to.
I wonder if Parfitt would dare get rid of him. Is Peel still seen as one of the 'crown jewels' of Radio 1?

until Parfitt announces the changes later this week, we will not know - frankly at ther mo he is talking branding/ marketing waffle with no concrete facts.

Noooo.

The thing that's scaring me most about this is that Zane Lowe will fill 12 hours of Radio 1 with his shouting. If Colin Murry, Chris Moyles etc aren't bad enough.

I'll need to start muffling my speakers just to listen properly.
I wished they'd be riskier with their late night schedules.. I was listening to Breezeblock last night (not with MaryAnne Hobbes, someone else was sitting in) and it was excellent. They should give the show a slightly earlier slot so more people can listen to the full show.

I guess this 'broadening the scope' means that Lamacq will be off, probably just to his one show on 6music. I really need to buy a digital radio (Even though daytime 6music is getting duller and duller at the moment).

don't care. don't listen to Radio 1 anymore. it is fast becoming obsolete.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Out in the provinces you take what you can get, but fuck John Peel basically.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

According to the article in the Independent, Peel's position is pretty safe, which is fine with me. He's introduced me to a hell of a lot of music. I quite enjoy brief moments of Zane Lowe's show, just to listen to his voice, its fucking great, not too keen on the music he plays. Chris Moyles is annoying, funny and fat all at the same time, but unfortunatly its all I get on the way to school. Every. Single. Morning.

What do you think the BBC should do with the Radio? Does anyone actually listen to the radio (for hearing new music) anymore? Digital radio sounds like such a great idea, I just wish the technology was available to everyone so they'd put more into it.

TomB (TomB), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The radio's rubbish. At least as far as pop music goes.
That could be because most pop music is rubbish, but that's irrelevant because the BBC don't even try to play good music, just what they think/want to be popular.

(Vast generalisation alert!)

if you ask me the bbc music station that needs change is .. 6 Music .. to embrace change/ be more radical/ diverse/ challenging/ eclectic and leftfield

if i were in charge of 6 Music ...there would be significant changes.. music that is not represented/ ignored or under represented at the mo

Ambient/ space music
Avant prog/ art rock/ post rock/ space rock / ethereal/ shoegazer
experimental electronics/ IDM
folktronica
techno/ tech house / electro
industrial/ gothic/ darkwave
leftfield hip-hop
post punk
jazztronica/ avant jazz/ jazz rock and improv
dark metal / metalcore/ noisecore

the current 6 Music playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/music/playlist.shtml

the current Radio 1 playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/playlist/alist.shtml

there is too much overlap with the current positioning of the playlists, and 6 music shows 7 pm onwards are very weak, plus 6 Music should do something with 12midnight - 2am slot rather than going through the motions.

There are people involved at 6 Music that would be better off on Radio 1 or Radio 2, and 6 Music plays far too much generic songs based mainstream /high profile rock/ guitar music.

the amount of inappropriate music on 6 music has increased particularly the new music selections that are dominated by singles backed by major labels and pluggers.

music news on 6 Music is also very weak, it is run by people with predictable trad-indie/ brit-pop music interests who recycle news off NME.com.

6 Music has a new boss Ric Blaxill - he has yet to ruffle his feathers or signal his intentions about the future direction of 6 music.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer R1. 6M looks like fucking Word magazine on air.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

When I first heard about 6 music, I thought it was going to be great, but it's got more bland recently. I can't even stand listening to Andrew Collins' drivetime show at the moment.

But what 6 music does really well is its weekend daytime shows. Mark Riley's show on saturday is great, maybe I think Lard has quite a say over what he plays, and Lamacq's Sunday show is pretty good too.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon a "Campaign for Music Change @ 6 Music" needs to start.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't look as bad as it originally sounds. Daytime is still crap, but they've got rid of Dave Pearce! and Lamacq and Peel still have the hours they have now.

There's an interesting thing called 'experimental' that's going to be on between 3-4am. I hope that'll be on listen again.

In other words, Kiss has beaten them in the ratings so they have to try another tack.

Radio 1 should be forcibly sold off to the commercial sector. There is no point in wasting public funds subsidising a Capital clone or an XFM xerox.

What happens to it thereafter is immaterial to me, as I prefer listening to Radio 2, 3 or 4, stations whose presenters do not feel it necessary to shout at me.

Peel has outlived his use...note his supercilious sneering at one of the records Polly Harvey brought in to play on last night's programme - "Hot Sand" by Shocking Blue (a FANTASTIC record!) and also at her choice of Howlin' Wolf song when he still managed to play the wrong track ("well it's the one I would have chosen!"). He is a sneering public school bully who should be put out of his misery.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 21 May 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I tuned into the Breezeblock on Monday evening. It was hosted by somebody called Annie McManus, and she lasted about five seconds on my radio - horrible SCREAMING and YELLING about HOW GREAT tonight's PROGRAMME was going to BE. Even James Whale is preferable to that.

RADIO 1 have confirmed the changed to their evening line-up which sees ZANE LOWE begin his show earlier in the day.

As previously reported, the station’s controller Andy Parfitt has said he is attempting to broaden the scope of the specialist shows on the station, hoping to appeal to more people.

Today (May 21) the station announced their full changes. Lowe, who presents an alternative music show, will start earlier, allowing him to "act as a bridge from daytime Radio 1 into the specialist night time line up".

Lowe said: "It has always been my goal to do more than just preach to the converted. By giving me a new time slot that gets me more into the daytime I am going to become a music missionary for all those listeners who may not know how much exciting new music they are missing out on."

Also, throughout the week, there will now be a series genre based nights of programming. These will include nights for rock, urban and dance. There will be new DJs hosting some shows, with other more established late night shows being brought forward.

The main changes, which will start in July, are:

Zane Lowe - Zane will now have four shows from Monday to Thursday. The new shows will begin at 7pm.
Mike Davies - Mike’s punk metal show 'The Lock Up' has now been brought forward to 9pm (previously 2am) as part of Tuesday night’s rock strand.
Bobby & Nihal - Their Asian beats show had been brought forward to 9pm (previously 3am) as part of Wednesday night’s urban strand.
Experimental - Every week day there will be a one hour show dedicated to showcasing the new and unusual from the worlds of music, comedy and art in a late night 3am slot.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "Radio 1’s remit is to break the best new music to the widest possible young audience."
