whos heard it? im generally pretty disappointed. most of it just sounds like a clinic impression to me with all the elements only slightly rearranged but generally a lot weaker. i thought walking with thee actually brought some new moods to the table. maybe itll grow on me. i havent actualyl listened to the whole thing yet either.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

don't they have only one song that they have re-written 30 times?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

HATERS SHUT UP; TIME FOR SLSK FUXRZ

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, you should just copy/paste that answer onto every future Strokes/White Stripes/Beck thread ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i will defend them by saying that they have at least 3 or 4 different songs. maybe this isnt a final mix or something? tracks 6,8,&9 seem stronger to me then most of the rest of the album.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

But I would have to vary it -- this is a leak thread, hence the "SLSK". For Beck threads I'd have to type "MOLDY CROUTONS"; for White Stripes threads I'd have to type "EYE JAMMIES"; for Strokes threads I'd have to type "GENIAL BISEXUALITY", etc

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Most wise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

fine, go to slsk. i'll just listen to the old album and pretend it's the new one. a lot easier.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ft whatever cutty u dont know ade like i do so take yr stank azz elsewhere!! the only scrubs clinic wants are the ones they wear lol!

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hah. if you know ade, then why are you soulseeking this? you should be giving him notes over a pint of lager.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus fucking Christ, it's the year 2004, can bands stop being put down for not being fucking Ween and making every single song a different genre/style/whateverthefuck?!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and the year has WTF to do with this?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'Cause it's 2004 motherfucker, I refuse to box

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(note to self: for future reference, quotes from Ghostface tracks may be looked upon with suspicion by people in Clinic threads)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

naw, i like you better now!

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't they on Universal now?

I have the studio version of "The Magician," but that's it. That song is just okay, I'm holding out for the more interesting stuff.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone has it and is online, would you please message me? I'm "perpetua" on slsk.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

can't be fucked to reads this. so is this leaked?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

roxy, im not saying they should play a zillion different genres but this album seems to me to be rather stale and covers no new ground in terms of moods or emotions etc. and the even in repeating what theyve done before, it seems like theyve gotten worse at it.

and i hate ween.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "history would be kinder to them," yes, they've been SO harshly judged by historians.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

time has been compressed

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

we've hit a wormhole

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

from the back

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

only if she 5'3"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyhow, I heard "The Magician" and it is almost exactly like "Welcome" but with the melodica played in this sort of klezmer style. It's not two-Nickelback-songs carbon copy, but it's really close. I am baffled. But I have my fingers crossed that it will have Walking With Thee's rhythm emphasis mixed with Internal Wrangler's sub-basement creepiness and do a few new weird things.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

nate i'll have this for you later tonight

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray, etc

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i just want you to hear how SAMEY it is!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

>:(

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

im still trying to hold up the idea that they purposely did a bad clinic impression and leaked it to trick everyone thats downloading it illegally.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

keep holding that up, your arms will get tired

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, most of these tracks sound like they were taken from a live rehearsal soundboard or rehearsals or something. Track 2 sounds like it has potential; it's got some odd Roxy Music-ish quality to it (the piano, mostly) that I like. Track 6 is very reminiscent of "Goodnight Georgie" and "For the Wars", but prettier. Track 7 is their token Buzzcocks nick bit but unless my ears deceive me this is just an early alternate embryonic take of "Pet Eunuch". Right? Oof.

I'm starting to wonder if they just leaked all their reject/future b-side material as a red herring.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

this is making me sad

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

They should sit down and listen to some '69-'70 Isaac Hayes records

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh what a radical departure in sound! this is really everything i don't like about clinic on one record. the truth is they cottoned on to a fantastic unique sound and for that they will always be remembered but the sound sadly appears to be impossible to develop. i mean, i assume they have been trying. or maybe not...

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a bad record, but it's not as special as the previous three. I'm kinda used to them reworking all of their own material - I suspect that they may be doing it on purpose - but the tunes mostly aren't clicking with me. "Falstaff" is a total gem, though. That one is just lovely.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

must everyone keep justifying why a band is unable to write fresh material?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if anything i like the more absctracted versions of clinic on this album . i concur matthew, that 'falstaff' is one of the better ones. mainly just because it's not the standard clinic stomp. i also really like 'fingers' for its pseudo honky honk piano coupled with classic clinic drive. but that's about it for the album really which is quite sad. the official deapotheosization (sp?) starts here.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty - i think's it's because we/they set clinic such high standards and we're so fickle we can't accept the same thing again and again. probably one of the side effects of modern music.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

myke, what i'm referring to is:

nate:
I'm starting to wonder if they just leaked all their reject/future b-side material as a red herring.

perpetua:
I suspect that they may be doing it on purpose

tom:
im still trying to hold up the idea that they purposely did a bad clinic impression and leaked it to trick everyone thats downloading it illegally.

roxy:
can bands stop being put down for not being fucking Ween and making every single song a different genre/style/whateverthefuck?!

the real reason is, they are a ONE TRICK PONY. stop coming up with other excuses.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed cutty. they are, and the act is starting to where thing. i think it's quite silly to expect anymore of them now. and besides how many bands throughout history have been critically applauded precisely because they are a one trick pony. clinic aren't breaking boundaries but they're hardly kings of suck either.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care if they are a "one trick pony" (which isn't even accurate, cos it's more like there are five basic Clinic song types, not just one). All I want is really good songs, I don't give a fuck if they are similar. To me, Walking With Thee is a better record than Internal Wrangler because it had more songs that I really, really like and less filler. Winchester Cathedral isn't as good as either because it has fewer songs that I'm really into. Simple.

I'm not terribly concerned about them not "progressing" or whatever. When I say that I think that they may be writing music in some kind of strange modular formulaic way, I don't mean that as an excuse for the generally lower quality of the material, nor as a complaint. If Clinic revealed that this was in fact their method, I think that it would be pretty fascinating.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Clinic on Winchester Cathedral = still waaaaaaay better than 99% of all indie bands currently going. Face it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly they aren't kings of suck as i said. but i did expect a lot from clinic as soon as i picked up one of their early sevens. they do have different song types but their sound is just so very clinic. i do think people maybe expect too much.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that perhaps they are more about having an airtight aesthetic - that goes a long way. They borrow quite a bit, but they don't sound like anyone but themselves. That's a good thing. Why should they reinvent themselves? There is a wide range of artists out there who are never expected to drastically change, so why should Clinic be an exception?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that *not* changing is a great thing (I would have preferred them to shake things up), but I am suggesting that maybe they are still growing at their own pace. They aren't ready to change yet.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

fair enough matt

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe their idea of change is different from what a lot of us expect. You know how some folks get really hung up on the technical details of their art? I get the sense that they are like that - "What do you mean, it sounds the same? There's piano and the lyrics are about different things and we're using different percussive instruments and we did some klezmer-ish stuff and we recorded it with ______ instead of ________, and the micing on the drums is ______." They may be more focused on craft.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, I'm not arguing or anything, just unpacking some thoughts.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(not so much justifying Winchester Cathedral -- yet -- as I am sayin' that "all their songs sound alike" is not necessarily a devastating criticism on its lonesome)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you tried listening to some of those late eighties albums, though?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but Clinic aren't exactly at their Halfway to Sanity point yet, chronologically or drummer-firingly

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)
