is that why they weren't very impressive when i saw them? this sampson character? (i am a dilettante, obv.)

It's Samson (no 'p'), and yeah, they lost something when he quit the band. I don't think he's in Bobby Conn's band. He played on a Smog record - Rain on Lens, I think.
Last I heard, he was in this shockingly un-weird band : http://www.westerngrand.com/

Bobby and his violinist pal Monica BouBou have deepened their musical partnership, resulting in rich, intensely detailed arrangements. There are lots of lush strings, horns, keyboards and vocal harmonies to drown in. The beats are courtesy of Bobby Conn Band touring veteran Colby Starck, new Wilco ace Glenn Kotche, and U.S. Maple drummer Pat Samson. And Josh Abrams, etc.

He has cute pigtails.

Pat Samson = what happens when someone who can't drum very well is impressed by Kevin Shea.

That's from a description of a three year old record. Thanks.

I just saw this:

Damn Colin, you sharp!

In Seattle, the drums were way too loud, overshadowing the reason every sumbitch who cares about US Maple goes to see them live: the guitar interplay and Al mushmouthing his hilarious nonsense. This poor mix ruined the gig for me.
