Does anyone know if this band has any other recordings other than that song that appears on the Can't Stop It!: Australian Post-Punk comp?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:44 (nineteen years ago) link

they have lots!

"help" is my favourite track of theirs but another you might know is the track "mr somewhere" that was covered by this mortal coil.

albums: "the evening visits", "a life full of farewells", "drift" and "apart". most should still be obtainable from Hot Records. there was a good number of years between the first and subsequent releases.

apparently Peter Walsh has retired from music..

they're pretty wonderful. things you keep is almost a dsert island pop song for me.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:41 (nineteen years ago) link

There's an excellent EP called Life which has:
Things You'll Keep (excellent from A Life Full of Farewells)
All You Wanted (an Aussie single, I believe)
The Shyest Time (from Some Kind of Wonderful OST)
Make It Count (B side to Shyest Time single)

My old roommate (an Aussie, now living in the US) was in the original version of the Apartments.

been on a heavy apartments kick of late, after falling in love with them all over again having seen one of the reunion shows last year (which was nothing short of incredible, PMW's voice sounding stronger than on any of the recordings)..

the album/song titles almost tell the whole story on their own. there's a resignation that drips from every word that i find irresistable.

i hope against hope that he has another album (or a few) in him..

fuckin brisbane. why oh why do all the best aussie songwriters come from there

electricsound, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

C: seeing an Apartments thread at the top of New Answers
D: it's not early announcement of a new album.
C: the eventual appearance of a new album. Per his MySpace page & linked interviews, he's continued to write songs - just hopehopehoping he releases them.

Did you pick up Fete Foraine, the live album? I don't see it listed in your mentions above, but it's a must-have. Beautiful, sparser versions of "Not Every Clown Can Be in the Circus", "Knowing You Were Loved", "End of Some Fear", etc.

been revisiting the later albums (farewells/apart) over the last couple of days.. i'm surprised at how weak the 'apart' album is as a whole. 'to live for' is up with his best work, but the rest of the tracks are okay at best, and tracks like 'cheerleader', which feel like a very misguided experiment, are just straight-up bad.

i had hoped that spending a bit more time with it would help but it hasn't. such a shame, considering 'drift' and 'farewells' are close to perfect.

Beautiful song. Got it last year on .mp3 when it was briefly available as a download. Will be buying this single post haste.

No Song...the most devastatingly sad yet beautiful album I've ever listened to. Trouble is, it's almost too painful to listen to!

yugi ex, Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Missed last year's request for recommendations. YMMV, but A Life Full of Farewells is my go-to, then either Apart or Drift, then The Evening Visits...

FYI, Mr. Walsh has a show next month (October 16) at the Make Out Room in San Francisco.

From his FB page: Stateside friends. I'll be doing a solo set in San Francisco, Sunday 16th October, my first show in the US playing Apartments songs. The club's called the Make Out Room—a beautiful room. San Francisco's Sea Dramas (drama was once my North, my South, my East, my West etc.) are playing at 8pm, I'll be on at 9pm. Doors 7pm. (Not the band The Doors—just plain wooden doors).

This is really good - musically pretty much on a par with ‘No Spell’ (imho) but maybe not quite the same lyrical/emotional punch - but I don’t think that’s a criticism or issue at all.

michaellambert, Friday, 25 September 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

Agreed on the solidness. While I wish PMW was more prolific, this was worth the wait. His voice is right up with Paul Buchanan for me, as far as instant transport to a particular mood. "hold on...no feeling is final" in "Write Your Way Out of Town", eyes welling. The trumpet in "The Fading Light", "Pocketful of Sunshine", and "We Talked Through Till Dawn" is lovely. This'll sync up nicely with A Girl Called Eddy on the year-end list.

I underrated the new album - hitting me really hard tonight. Quiet, graceful and beautifully low key compared to the more demonstrative emotional register of the previous album.
