Kerrang gave it 5/5.
NME gave it 8/10.
Allmusic.com gave it 4 and a half/5.
Is it really a classic?

I give it a jaw-dislocating yawn.

Are you Ben Weasel, Alex?

Haven't heard it yet. And given the way Roadrunner's publicity department's been treating me lately, I'm probably gonna have to buy a copy. Which I will do, despite misgivings.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was told by some dude that promo copies sent out early on to writers had to be SENT BACK to Roadrunner after they were done with them. I wonder if you had to sign your name in blood beforehand. I asked for one anyway cuz I'm gonna write about it and they said they would get me one 3 days before release.

Are Roadrunner a major label? Because these stories remind me of my struggles to get a promo of C.Lo's record a few months back.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate their new single, embarassingly enough...

Richard K., Wednesday, 19 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

>Are Roadrunner a major label?

They were a large indie that got absorbed by Island Def Jam a couple of years ago. So I guess they're a major-label imprint now.

I have been struggling mightily to get my hands on an advance copy but to no avail

It's quirky and filled with lots of inventive elements, but rarely gets my blood boiling. Seems like much more clean singing than last time. "Three Nil" isn't that far from the way big rock groove of QOTSA, but it has a crazy fast death metal break. I think they played "Duality" on Leno a couple nights ago -- it's the rock radio upgrade of best-Slipknot-song-ever "Left Behind." Reminds me of a much better Fear Factory, of maybe a cleaned-up Brujeria. "Welcome" is an even better example of Slipknot style, this semi-exciting feeling that the band's just getting up to speed as the song ends. "Circle" is some life-affirming acoustic guitar crap. "Pulse of the Maggots" is a great representative anthem, and features a speck of an "Amen" sample. Lots of squirrely guitar leads a la Kerry King, but not much by way of evil atmosphere. Slipknot is a highly-disciplined energy machine! Except "Danger - Keep Away" sounds like sleepstrumental Slint with Mike Patton whining atop. I agree with the NME's 8/10, but it might slip to 7 -- I'm overly happy to see a band as loopy and fan-oriented as Slipknot triumph over all the shit bands they were grouped with for the past five years. Two million copies sold by end of summer, easily. But why do the drums have to sound like popping balloons?

I saw the Duality video a few days ago and the song is great.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 19 June 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like it as much as iowa, but i applaud slipknot for bringing average-to-UGLY looking people back on tv.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 19 June 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Still haven't bought it. Listened to three or four songs one day at a listening station in the Hot Topic store in Woodbridge Mall and was un-sold.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 19 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's their best album. They're the best nu-metal band out there. Take that for what it is.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Sunday, 20 June 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

those acoustic numbers are jarring to say the least. I can't tell if i love them or hate them.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 June 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a song from this yesterday and it sounded great! Thrash riffs, guitar solos, double bass, and Rick Rubin Tiny Pianos (tm), who knew.

Don't joke about that please. That happened to me once a few years ago and I had to go to the emergency room to get it put back in place. Very uncomfortable.

I'm just getting into this record now, and it's got some outstanding tracks. "Vermilion Part 2" is probably my favorite song right now. I wish I could have realized earlier that "Duality" should have been in my top singles for 2004. Maybe next time.
