Outside My Door: The intro to this is so fucking perfect... When the organ comes in I kinda don't like it but, the first 40 seconds rule so much and it gets good again.

Father Cannot Yell is almost as good btw.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

amazing. album. too. short.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well...Yoo Doo Right.
Is Mary Mary So Contrary the same song as Thief (from Delay), but with
dumb lyrics?

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What other Malcom Mooney material is good?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i love little star of bethlehem!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the empress and the ukraine king, yo

owen hatherley, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this was said in the damo vs malcolm thread, but i will reiterate, i don't think he had a dud song with can.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Really like Fall of Another Year, too.
Actually, I hear Cannabilism 2 for the first time last night.
What is the last song on that disc? It's a Malcolm tune and it
really struck me.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

melting away. brilliant!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard "Mary Mary" in 10+ yrs so I can't remember how great it is, but I'm still gonna go with "Father Cannot Yell." Actually I liked Malcolm Mooney better than Damo Suzuki, probably a minority opinion. "Mother Upduff" is great.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Father Cannot Yell is my fave (and in fact what made me think Can was fucking brilliant genious), ...but Yoo Doo Right could stand to be twice as long.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yoo Doo Right". How could it be anyhing but?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an early Stereolab song, off Switch On Vol 1, that totally cops the melody to "Mary, Mary"...

I was hoping, since Unwound were all huge Can fans, that they would one day record a version of "Outside My Door", but I guess that won't happen now.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

DB, I kiss you -- I was listening to Challenge for a Civilized Society earlier.

Anyone know what Justin is up to? Wasn't he supposed to play one of the ATPz a while back solo but he didn't.

Is Replikants active?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There's only four tracks on the album, and the ones not titled "Yoo Doo Right" are disqualified from the discussion.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I saw Justin was at the Sun City Girls show in Tacoma at Bob's Java Jive last December.

I'm guessing he's doing more recording of other bands than his own stuff, and that he and Brandt are still hanging out and working on something, maybe Replikants, maybe not. I think the Portland folks would have more insight, since I think Justin regularly goes down to PDX to DJ at a club, if I'm not mistaken.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to be Contrary and say Mary Mary but really it has to be Yoo Do Right

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yup... yoo doo right. this is the first can record i heard.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Likewise. I'd heard Thin White Rope's cover of it (it's on Sack Full of Silver), but their live rendition is what made me seek it out. Can's original shits all over TWR's version, in any case (no undue disrespect to TWR, though, who were a criminally undersung band).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't have Monster Movie, but "Yoo Doo Right" has always struck me as the only Malcolm-era Can song that Damo could've sung...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Changing Uphill
Going Slowly.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst thing in the world is the absolute abomination that is the Geraldine Fibbers' version of "Yoo Doo Right."

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Didn't know they covered it. I quite like their first album.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it's fucking terrible. It's on that Butch record. Somebody please buy Nels Cline a decent guitar tone!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"father cannot yell" for karoli's "solo", if nothing else. "yoo doo right", great as it is, always struck me a sort of the dry run for a sound they'd do better, later.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, Father Cannot Yell roXorz so hard. Ideally heard at 7 AM after a night of debauchery

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tease Me Please Me"

dave q, Thursday, 20 May 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

All of Malcolm's songs are good, which certainly cannot be said of Damo - tho don't ask me to choose between the two as I love 'em both. OK, "Man Named Joe" is not great.
