Because some of us were too nerdy for PE or NWA.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

pauls boutique

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

haha nate!

Paul's Boutique....I just listened to 3 Feet High and it didn't seem as great as I remembered more incoherant and muddled and the skits bugged alot....(change the question to De La Soul is Dead vs. Paul's and the answer changes though)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not too nerdy, but if a vote for De La is a vote against the Beasties, well then, hell, sign me up for the Daisy Age, son

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

why vote against the beastie boys?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

3 Feet High - better samples, better MCing, although I do like Paul's Boutique since it's the only good thing the Beasties ever did.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"hey ladies" has better samples than all of 3ftH put together!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

why vote against the beastie boys?

because roger had a girlfriend named Janice once and he got sick of people asking for her

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence OTM (although I will readily admit that I listen to . . . is Dead more.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

3 Feet High oozes fun, so it wins.

I Wish You Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no way - sampling Sugarhill Gang is better than sampling Cymande?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

damn straight De La Is Dead is superior to 3 Feet

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

paul's boutique has "goes by the name of disco dave" ... where have you EVER heard anything that sounds like that song, EVER?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyways, Paul's Boutique in a landslide. 3 Feet High and Rising is fun but it gets a bit too twee/cartoony/precious at points ("Tread Water"... oh my GAH).

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no way - sampling Sugarhill Gang is better than sampling Cymande?

um ... it samples zapp + roger! and some other stuff, too!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I choose De La Soul Is Dead too.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah and "Hey Ladies" samples James Brown, but still I like that one Cymande sample like crazy. Since I got that record two weeks ago I've listened to it every freakin' day.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Search for the early demo versions of "Car Thief" which are damn near Blowfly-level filthy-mcnasty.

De La Soul is Dead also loses out to Paul's Boutique... barely. By a sliver. By a hair. By the merits of "A Year and a Day", mostly.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll say that the 2 disc reissue of "3 feet high" with all the remixes considerably strengthens the case for de la soul.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Paul's Boutique can go eat a gigantic bowl of pudendum.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Okay, a moderately-sized bowl.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

MINNESOTAN VS. MINNESOTAN!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost: it's mouth is already stuffed with popcorn shrimp and dutch masters

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

wishing cunnilingus on an album is so harsh

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a bad, bad man.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul's Boutique is my favorite hip-hop album of all time.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

now I like Paul's but that's just sad.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

*tumbleweed*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Another thing that sucks about 3 Feet High: Ever notice that nobody ends up winning the game show?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

A winner is announced at the beginning of De La Soul Is Dead!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Dead.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to think there's an odd sort of dichotomy about the Funkadelic songs each record centers around -- "Car Thief" with the slow, lurching psych-blues break/chord from "I'll Bet You", and "Me Myself and I" with the Worrellgasmic "(Not Just) Knee Deep". Could the records' respective personae be summed up just with that detail?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(well OK Paul's Boutique doesn't center around that song; also I am talking out my ass)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Which still isn't incredible or anything, but "Rollerskating Jam Named Saturdays"...

x-post to myself

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

they're both good records, but 3 Feet High is better. It's also the best De La record (and "Tread Water" may be its best track), while Paul's Boutique is my least favorite Beasties record.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A winner is announced at the beginning of De La Soul Is Dead!

Oh. I've never heard that record. Maybe I should.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The only De La thing I get really excited about is "Ooh" mainly because of "TO ALL THE FAT BITCHES GETTIN YOUR FUCK ON TONIGHT..."

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate it's also pretty funny that it took the white ex-hardcore dudes and black nerdy "no we're not hippies" to introduce Funkadelic samples to hip-hop!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"least favorite" doesn't count Aglio e Olio and such

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

only someone who hadn't heard Is Dead would claim that 3 Feet was better.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ridiculously over-reaching blanket statements like my last one are the fodder of ILM, obv.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Dead over 3 Feet over Paul's Couple of Good Singles and All That But Who Needs the Album Anyway

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

...Is Dead isn't a bad album, and it has some highlights (more on the production side than anywhere else, afaic), but many many people overrate it

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

where do donkey balls fit in your equation, Ned?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Very carefully.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

3 feet has so many better songs than Is Dead (or Paul's, obv). The lyrics of the best songs of Is Dead are better, but you have to wade through so much goofy experiments to get to them.

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ned i don't like your point about "who needs the album"

"shake your rump" / "johnny ryall" / "egg man"
"sounds of science" / "three minute rule" / "hey ladies"
"car thief" / "what comes around" / "shadrach"

ok three damn-near perfect triplets bookended by boringness, yes, (destroy high plains drifter and the other one)

and "b-boy bouillibaise" or whatever it's called is headspinning.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

there seems to be less in common here than on the other thread.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually there were probably groups sampling P-Funk well before '89. So I should maybe like do some research, yeah.

Ned, I applaud your further efforts to be the anti-Nate. Let us never meet, for all music will then cease to exist and people will have to dance to the sounds of photocopiers and construction machinery.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I started this thread, which means everyone has to be contentious and ill-thought-out. Me included. Me especially.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think ...is Dead is better than 3FH but i haven“t heard Pauls boutique in full since 1995 or so, gotta rebuy it, i lent it to a friend back then and never got it back.

heroes + villains, Friday, 21 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

and you not getting a haircut, neither

SCRUB (gabbneb), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

in like 8th grade or something, I asked this kid on my bus, who was a junior or senior and whose friends called him Dante, if he was the "Dante" from 3FH&R. I think he just looked at me. I hope I was joking, but I'm not sure. A few years later two of his best friends founded Rawkus.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take Sons of the P, thanks

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT IS NOT AN OPTION MR. GOAT

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ok how 'bout the Naughty by Nature debut then

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

paul's boutique by default. don't listen to either anymore. i had recently tried listening to 3' and as an album, it was pretty annoying. i say i appreciate the album much more than i actually enjoy listening to it.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 21 May 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take Sons of the P, thanks

Haha, I was thinking of them earlier today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

NO FAIR!

If j0hn gets to vote for DU and Naughty By Naturethen I get to vote for the first Black Sheep album! (the best native tongue album imo)...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cue Dan and I voting for PWEI...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah, Don't make me choose between Black Sheep and The Poppies!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that a cat being neutered without anesthesia might be a better MC than 2/3 of the Beastie Boys.

Oh Dan, you asked for it:

http://www.toysnjoys.com/carebears/grumpy.jpg

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

weird, just picked PB after years of the being hidden in the attic on cassette. so i am about to hear if for first time in about 10 years .. but damn i overplayed that tape. does absence make my heart fonder ..(shake your rump just kicked .. i'm down with it once more ..)
and we all know that PWEI nicked their whole thing from age of chance dont we .. so i aint joining in on that one ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not saying this to be facetious or condescending or anything, but I am trying to figure out how someone is physically capable of (a) hating the Beastie Boys yet (b) liking Insane Clown Posse.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beasties aren't absurd enough.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Adrock: 'When I was 9/I played with slime'"

"MCA: America's Premier Buddhist Rhyme King"

"Mike D, Man of Leather"

How the fuck is none of that absurd?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey stence, did you get the vinyl reissue of the rare Cymande LP that just came out of Paul Winley Records?

NOPE ORIGINAL PRESSING BABY, $9.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Dan....I just got to interview the ICP at the E3 convention! They were reallly nice guys....I was waiting the backroom for them at Eidos's booth (they're in the new Backyard Wrestling game as is porn star Tera Patrick who I also interviewed!)....anyway, they were 20 minutes late because they had to "put on their makeup", but then they came in and almost knocked me out with the stench of super Cali skunk weed!

Actually, really nice guys, though...Violent J is a big dude but very friendly....Shaggy is quieter (or just more stoned I guess)....Violent J talked about how Eidos were "real juggalos" and said he's too fat and out of shape....I tried to get them to bait Eminem, but they would really take the bait...said that beef was "old-school"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dan, I was pushing the Beasties as absurd people over absurd performers there, but the LTI tour, the videos = big absurdity minefields. The 'Hey Ladies' vid alone makes me laugh my ass off)

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ire ICP : is the Final Card converting the jugg's over to the Lord then ?

mark e (mark e), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

unfair to compare,
first album to second one,
blah blah blah bullshit

that having been said,
I pick 3FH myself,
that's the way I am

plus john d is high,
sons of the p is horrid,
(except 'kiss you back')

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

why is it unfair?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

cause I said so

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's bullshit.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

bullshit-and-a-half, even.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also cause paul's tone
is much more like is dead than
like three feet (I think)

whoops, I guess I took too long to submit my real reason and ho boy did stence call MY shit out! ouch! that stings! what a zinger!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

a zinger and a half, even!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If The Beastie Boys had used a narrative schtick that ran through all of their recorded output and included casting themselves as evil serial-killer clowns dedicated to avenging the wrongs heaped upon the poor and disaffected as well as macking on ugly women, plus marketed all of their releases around an apocalyptic scenario that heralded the coming of the Devil to drag the selfish bastards of the world off to Hell, they would be as absurd as Insane Clown Posse.

I mean, really. How can you even begin to claim that The Beasties are anywhere NEAR as absurd as ICP?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(Also, it isn't that I DISLIKE The Beastie Boys; it's that De La is superior to them in pretty much every way imaginable.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(Okay, so The Beasties are better at being white than De La, but that's about it.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I just love the Beasties and couldn't give a toss about ICP. Also, TS: 'absurd vs ridiculous'.

If ICP are as daft off record as the B-Boys can be, I'm happy to concede that point.

Man of Feathers (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to hear De La Soul do a hardcore album. Prolly would be better than Polliwog Stew.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

When was the last time you saw the Beasties doing any EXTREME WRESTLING? Also, how often have the Beasties been arrested for doing supremely stupid shit?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(I will concede the "absurd vs ridiculous" point, though.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Concession of sorts here too (I love the Beasties being cussed all over the front page of The Daily Mirror back home in '88, beat THAT, ICP). Also, the Beasties' 'Bob Dylan Sample Myth'. And Celebrity Deathmatch appearance (utter crap, but that was the last time I saw them in the ring, haha).

Stence, any idea what the De La record with Teenage Fanclub or Atari Teenage Riot (I can't remember) was like?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, any idea what the De La record with Teenage Fanclub or Atari Teenage Riot (I can't remember) was like?

Good god no, I think I'd rather shoot myself than have to listen to ATR ever again.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the De La/TF song on the Judgement Night soundtrack? I remember it being much more De La than Teenage Fanclub.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it was. That sdtk is not half as fun as it should've been.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I collect my comments into one post now that I've read this whole thread on a good lazy friday.

First off, I pick Buhloone Mindstate. If that's not allowed, then I might have to go with PWEI. (Ned forgot the other person on here who is going to bring them up, but I'll forgive him because I don't post enough to have developed that reputation.)

If I have to play by the rules, 3 Feet is better than Paul's Boutique. Anyone arguing that the Beasties are somehow more fun in an absurd way has probably never found joy in calling someone a scrub or telling someone with bad ass breath to take a Ludens.

I would love to hear De La Soul do a hardcore album. Prolly would be better than Polliwog Stew.

Hm. It's too bad we couldn't hear De La do a hardcore record when they were in their late teens to have a better comparison. Cause really I don't think it's that hard to do a better hardcore album than Polliwog Stew. In the Beasties' defense tho, I think Aglio is a great little record.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet, I've called women with long hair 'Rapunzel' and offered to climb up and get into their underwear. The Beasties win again.

Also, EGGMAN, sucker (round, round, round we go).

Dropping science like Galileo dropped the orange (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Eggman" is a damned good song. I'm not denying that.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

NOPE ORIGINAL PRESSING BABY, $9.

Damn you, hstencil! Is the album any good? I have the self-titled Cymande LP, and didn't bother getting the reissue cuz I didn't think lightning could strike twice.

Vic Funk, Friday, 21 May 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

uh whoops funk I thought you meant the original self-titled, which is what I meant.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

twenty-one years pass...

does anyone know what would've happened if you actually sent in the answers to the game show questions at the beginning of 3 Feet High and Rising to the stated address at the end? did anyone actually win anything?

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 17:03 (one year ago)

they sat in a pile on dante ross' desk. Other times they've said he opened them and no one got the answers right

erasingclouds, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 19:42 (one year ago)

I love both of these albums so much, I could never pick one against the other. Played the shit out of them when MCA and Dave passed away.
