Depeche Mode 81 - 85 vs. Depeche Mode 86 - onwards

I recently got the earlier hits CD after years of having the 86-98 greatest hits and i really like it. Not sure which one I like the best now.

Please don't just pick one, just compare.

Was "Just Can't Get Enough" written during David Gahan's infamous drug addiction or had he not started yet?

"It's Depeche Mode from another era, back when Vince Clarke wrote the songs and the only drugs they'd do were aspirin." - Nick Duerden in Q, November 1998.

Dreaming of Me

says what I think

I think it's funnier to listen to their earlier songs as if they were on skag. Funny how "Just Can't Get Enough" was David Gahan's first big "hit"(!)

also I reckon "Everything Counts" just edges in over "Enjoy The Silence" as best DM song ever. Especially the live version - god damn!

Post 86 for me.

And I don't reckon Dave Gahan's drug addictions really made much difference to the songs, what with Martin Gore writing them all.

Don't you be forgetting the ones Vince wrote...

I didn't realise Gore wrote the songs (for some reason). I mean, stick a needle in the lyric sheet for Violator and there's a drug reference ;-) (see Sweetest Perfection etc)

I thought Gahan's 'habit' started before DM, but there you go. And anyway, New Life was their first hit proper...

I guess Gore wrote about what he saw. Which typically was Gahan off his nut.

Gore has some weird thing that he will only ever write songs for DM, hence two solo covers albums.

As for the vince thing...yeah, well....

Didn't Gahan get cross with Gore taking the piss out of him all the time then? I mean if you were in a band with someone and they had haemmorhoids, you wouldn't write songs about it for them to sing now would you?

Gore was also a MAJOR alcoholic for a long while, which may explain so many addiction references.

Funny you should say this dog latin. This was the similar to the point where Gahan broke, and they agreed to change "constipation" to "condemnation".

FACT.

Ah, makes sense now.

The choice is a huge mismatch. '81-'85 contains a few good albums, but '86 - onwards contains only classics, including their three best (Violator, Masses, Ultra).
As Ned wrote on the other thread (linked by Dr. C), "from my cold dead hands", etc.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 20 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

1981 - 85 DM was vey good single band. Their albums had really bold titles "Construction Time Again" etc. but were boring. BUT in opinion in 1983 DM was much more innovative than New Order or smth.

The early stuff is all I can listen to. They were like a breath of fresh air at the time...and then became yet another rock band (imo)
