? (a spin-off from the De La vs. Beasties thread)

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think most everyone thinks it's pretty good, just not quite as good as the first two so therefore it doesn't get as much attention.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it, though? Maybe it's not very good?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

what's "lost" about this album? I probably listen to this one more than any of their records, though I'd rate the first three all about equally. (Part of this may be down to my owning the most unbelievably shitty vinyl reissue of De La Soul is Dead - makes it hard to listen to).

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not as wacky or as "interesting" as the first two, but it's stronger in some other ways. One of which being heart/soul, which sounds cheesy, so forget about it.

Also to be discussed, was Stakes is High really overrated when it came out, or am I remembering incorrectly?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

De La Soul without Prince Paul is like spaghetti with no sauce.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There's one great track on Stakes Is High.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

this album hasn't been lost, it's right where it should be. eye patch, breakadawn, that silly japanese rapping track. all classic.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Lost in the sense that it's not discussed as much as the first two, at least not in the circles in which I travel.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

..Is Dead>>>>>>Bulhoon Mindstate>>>>>>>3 Feet High and Rising

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing the circles in which you travel listen to more rock than hip hop.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

stakes is high = ultimate summer album

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

email him nice lady!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

another reason to love this record: classic cameo by the Biz.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say in that other thread that this is my favorite De La album. (I also really like Stakes is High). It's just so enjoyable and not "ambitious" or "ground breaking." Just a solid hip hop album through and through. Great for parties.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

it's always over before I want it to be

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's alright...Ego Tippin is awesome....pretty messy and inconsistent though...much like it's "sister album" (in my mind at least) ...JBeez Wit The Remedy

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

also, one of the best openings of any album ever

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

J Beez Wit The Remedy!!! OMG - THAT is the great "lost" album of the Native Tongues. Seriously groundbreaking work, totally ignored, even to this day.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah...remedy is pretty cool...haven't listened to it in ages though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've championed it on other threads. No one agrees with me tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

With the exception of a dip in the middle (tracks 8 & 9 or was it 9 & 10), Stakes... remains an overlooked De La great and worthy of inclusion with the previous three.

If anything, everything since has not been up to De La par.

itzsoweezee (nader), Thursday, 20 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm guessing the circles in which you travel listen to more rock than hip hop."

Well, actually, my entourage is pretty evenly split. My bodyguards, yeah, they generally listen to more rock than hip hop. But my stylist, my PR guy, my accountant, my gopher, my sycophant, and my photographer are all hip hop junkies from way back. So I feel like I get a good exposure to both.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

more consistent than either of its predecessors, but less useful or interesting for me. maybe I'm just not at the right age/lifestyle yet.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(the Japanese rap is dire, though)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

how could you listen to takagi-kan and not smile?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss Paul and the skits, too

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never actually heard this album all the way through. What I have heard is CLASSIC.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's their best. Quite heartfelt in parts, without being sentimental or too right-on and boring. Posdnous really shines. I like all the first 3, whereas I seriously think I've listened to the last 2 once each. Bionix is particularly poor (redeemed only by the Cee Lo collab).

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dan is at the right age/lifestyle

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Bionix is particularly poor (redeemed only by the Cee Lo collab).

Wrong. Not perfect, but comparable to Buhloone. More serious, but livelier. Better rhyming and production.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to say, the people whose tastes most mirror mine or whom I implicitly trust on album recommendations have all said that Bionix is probably the best De La album since... Buhloone Mind State.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Maceo solo with the funny drums.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, wow -- I need to listen to BMS again. That's probably my favorite De La album -- just takes me back .

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i've listened to buhloone mind state more than any other de la album, i think. the cd didn't leave the stereo for a good portion of my freshman year of college, and it still gets occasional play. i got into a car accident while listening to it, in fact (i be blowin' was playing at the time). i'd call it great, but definitely not lost.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to re-buy this.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone remember the video for Ego Trippin'?

That was pretty funny, with the hot-tube and all.

You've got to love that the first single, Breakadawn, is buried as track number 13 in the album.

I adore this album. It's the De La Soul album I listen to most. Actually, I don't listen to either 'is Dead' or '3ft' anymore. Frankly, I find '3ft' pretty unlistenable. It just goes to show that the most innovative albums are often not the most listenable.

Is 'listenable' a word?

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

has everyone forgotten about the track trying people at the end of bionix?

one of the most heartfelt hip hop tracks EVERRRR.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I put it on one of my year-by-year lists of personal favorite tracks ever. It probably wouldn't be there if I, uh, got out more.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 20 May 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Ego Trippin vs. Ego Trippin (Pt.2)

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 20 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this album, obvs; "I Am I Be" is on my top 100.
That said, I prefer Stakes Is High.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss Paul and the skits, too

Paul's on the cover!

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 20 May 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I don't get that comment either, Paul's all over BMS.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the tops from de la in my book. just ego trippin' alone is reason enough.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 20 May 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the best De La album by far, with I Am, I Be meriting especial plaudits.

Just an extremely good hip hop album.

I seem to remember that it also inspired some very good 'pheNOMMMMMenon' impersonations from Beavis and Butthead way back when.

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

where's Shorty No Mas?

(i'm still seeing the girl who had a well-worn CASSETTE copy of this album in her car on first outing... mostly cuz of her/partially cuz of BMS)

naturalaw-dp, Friday, 21 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Great, great album, although I've now played it to death and can no longer listen to it.

"Held Down" from Bionix is probably my fave De La Soul song right now.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I said it on the other thread too.. BMS is my favorite De La record hands down. I actually like that they did away with the skits but didn't really change the attitude. It's nothing but improvement over the two preceding it, and I think both of those are great records.

"It might blow up, but it won't go pop" has got to be one of my favorite hip hop lines of all time.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Except that not only did it blow up AND go pop it also goes to the club and gets crunk with britney. Holla!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And "Trying" is indeed incredible, I just wish they left that pointless and damaging bullshit at the start and the end off. Just what I wanted, a bonafide classic bookended by an answering machine egotrip and an outtake from Prince's Gold album.
Actually you know what, I'm gonna go re-edit this thing right now so I never have to hear that again.
I love computers.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

this albums fuckin great, although i listen to 'stakes is high' more often.

this is great, I think it actually may be my favorite DLS album, or at least the one that's easiest to just let play. and how often is a 5 minute instrumental a non-skippable track on a hip hop record?

my favorite too

One of my all time favs. Shame this isn't streaming, because in some ways it's the De La album most relevant to the times... def the most in line with what Chance and company are doing these days
