I'm thinking of buying a Motorhead album today. Should I?

Ace of Spades

It's not really my cup-of-tea, but it's so highly spoken of around these parts. Would someone possibly like it, if they don't generally go for that sort of thing?

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Go for No Sleep `Til Hammersmith instead. Louder, faster, sloppier.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You may not like it, but at the very least, you'll probably respect its purity.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The louder, faster bit is what concers me. So Ace of Spades is quieter, slower?

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

why are you buying something you don't think you'll like? what do you like?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"why are you buying something you don't think you'll like? what do you like?"

I like all kinds of things. But that's a good point. I don't think I'll like it. But sometimes I surprise myself. Sometimes I like things if i give them a chance.

hmmm...

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally speaking, I think Motorhead are head and shoulders better than most the bands they're lumped in with. While they set the template for bands like Venom and Slayer, there's more to their music than simply relentless sonic onslaught (though relentless sonic onslaught can be quite satisfying in its own right as well).

Maybe you'd be better off buying a Blow Monkeys best-of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch to the last part.

"Personally speaking, I think Motorhead are head and shoulders better than most the bands they're lumped in with."

That's what made me think of buying it. I enjoy discovering the genius in a band that doesn't innately appeal to me. That's the pleasure of buying something outside my comfort-zone.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Motorhead are as inaccessible as you might expect. I mean, they're not Burzum. They are still recognizably musical.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, alright. I'm gonna buy it.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bombs away.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Now you'll be punching octagenarians, clubbing stray kittens and popping children's balloons in no time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

At heart Motorhead is a rock'n'roll band, only the loudest one around. The interplay between the bass and guitar is simply amazing. I'm with Alex in NYC on this, No Sleep is the most extreme record of its time. But note that it is a live album. For a clear picture of Motorhead's songwriting abilities and musicianship, listen to Overkill, Bomber or Ace of Spades. The latter is the loudest one, but also the most straight forward. I personally love the thoughtfully contructed songs of the former two albums a bit more. Also of interest is their debut, simply called Motorhead, because of its greasy blues sound and swing.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Friday, 21 May 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm getting excited.

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not DL a few select tracks from your friendly P2P (or even Amazon, fer crissakes) and see if you like it first?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Next thing, it'll be off to the tattoo parlor to get one o' these...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that you Alex?

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I may be an idiot, but I'm not that bad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Either No Remorse or The Best of Motorhead is all the Motorhead anyone really needs.

abegrand, Friday, 21 May 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

See, now I made a similarly sweeping statement like that a week ago on a SKA thread, and everyone jumped on me and practically ripped off my arms and beat me to death with them. Now I understand why there were upset.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

abegrand is right - that's all you need. to START WITH. but the 2-disc "best of motorhead" should hold you for a week or two. plus it's got the motorhead/girlschool collaboration in it's entirety, i think.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 21 May 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're new to Motorhead, you just can't go wrong with either of those two compilations. I tend to prefer the 1993 Roadrunner comp, with its inclusion of "Orgasmatron".

abegrand, Friday, 21 May 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Burzum is as inaccessible as you might expect. I mean, it's not Beherit. He is still recognizably musical.

At heart Motorhead is a rock'n'roll band, only the loudest one around.

That's the essence of it, yes. Not punk, not metal, straight blues-based rock 'n roll. BTW they've got a new album coming out one of these days, haven't they?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm selling mine. I respect its purity, but I never listen to it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran - Beherit isn't a name I've encountered before. Just how extreme are they then?

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Beherit is as inaccessible as you might expect. I mean, it's not Merzbow. He is still recognizably musical.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 21 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting confused. are people repeating each other, or am I just imagining it?

Debito (Debito), Friday, 21 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Beherit was a chaotic, melody-free grind/black metal band who were notorious (circa 1990-1993) for just blasting away without really bothering with riffs or songs. They were not particularly "heavy" in a crunching guitars sense (it was all quite lo-fi) but their foul, violent, primal and ugly approach was very enjoyable.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i have an entire collection full of albums whose purity i respect. nowadays i just listen to Wayne Wonder - "No Letting Go" on loop.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Whilst I'd certainly agree that "Motorhead are head and shoulders better than most the bands they're lumped in with", I'm also with the "The Best of Motorhead is all the Motorhead anyone really needs" contingent.

With the greatest possible respect, too much purity can start to get a bit samey after a while.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Motorhead album, Inferno, comes out June 22 in the US. I have it. It's uglier than their last album, and a little thrashier - close in spirit to We Are Motorhead or Bastards. Be warned, though: Steve Vai contributes guitar solos to two songs.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh, beherit had songs. many's the day i walk around supressing the urge so sing along with that catchy "ave satan! ave lucifer!" bit.

I don't think Beherit is as inaccessible as you might expect. I mean, it's not ___Abruptum___. He is still recognizably musical.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve Vai contributes guitar solos to two songs.

GAH!

The word "abomination" comes to mind. Never have the frets been as needlessly harried as when Mr.Vai is strangling the neck.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sixteen years pass...

I don't think __Abruptum___ is as inaccessible as you might expect. I mean, it's not Portal. He is still recognizably musical.

Ha!

I wonder if Debito liked that Motorhead album...

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 28 January 2021 00:12 (five years ago)

"Please Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me" I heard for the first time last night. that was...unexpected

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Thursday, 28 January 2021 00:35 (five years ago)

Apparently Lemmy wrote that hoping that some of the female singers he knew might record it, but they turned it down. I wouldn't say it's in bad taste, but I wouldn't say it really works either.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 28 January 2021 00:50 (five years ago)

it was kind of akin to hearing Slayer do a piano ballad, I mean it was tasteful and Lemmy surprisingly sang well on it, but....I kinda didn't expect it.

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Thursday, 28 January 2021 00:55 (five years ago)

Led by Lemmy's corrugated, driving past-the-verge-of-collapse lungpower, Mötörhead always seemed like scarred old bikers veering in and out of the desert, via that endless two-lane highway in the MAD MAX movies (my kind of "proto-metal" appeal)---but worth noting some of the detours involved changes of personnel (also for inst those xpost Steve Vai solos). I do wanta get back to the really early stuff mentioned upthread, but also rec No RemorseOrgasmatron(Laswell-produced, freaky dystopian demolition derby under the stars ; it works) Rock 'n' Roll (maybe a back-to-*their*-kind-of-roots move, also works), 1916, and Under Cöver, incl. Lemmy singing "Heröes," yeahhhh, good collection.

dow, Thursday, 28 January 2021 19:27 (five years ago)

Sörry, No Remorse is sep album, despite my typö mashing it in w Orgasmatron, which öf cöurse shöuld have been Örgasmatron, althö Ö may have been töö öbvious tö böther with, while Lemmy was still around tö have a say in it(Under Cöver is pösthumöus emissiön)

dow, Thursday, 28 January 2021 19:40 (five years ago)

And No Sleep At All is real good live (been a long time since I heard xpost No Sleep til Hammersmith, can't remember how they compare, but I prob need that one too)
