The current lineup of Deep Purple contains only one original member -- drummer Ian Paice. Even Paice wasn`t exactly original member, he was second drummer of DP Mark I.
In Estonia was a band called Fix, starting 1968 as a pseudo-hippy group and dissolving in early 70s. But in 1975 original guitarist Väino Land formed a new line up with young musicians but remained himself only official leader of the group, not playing any instrument or writing songs. This new line-up was later called "classical" survivaved mostly about 20 years.

(umm, didn't Jayne County not do the final op on mental health grounds (i.e. psyc tests showed he was not prepared for that final stage))

Gong: this would have certainly have been true around the time of Gazeuse and Expresso (1977-78), but Daeivd Allen & Gilli Smyth have been fronting the band again for the past, ooh I dunno, 5 or 6 years.

The Supremes spring immediately to mind.
