Well, now Bryan McFadden's left, that's true. He wrote "Girls Allowed" by Girls Aloud, which was rather brilliant.

Loads of famous and serious bands have no good songwriter in their lineup. Radiohead is the greatest this kind of band. Brilliant structures, but not very excellent tunes.

Probably why they seem to have been covered so much by jazzers (Brad Mehldau etc.).

motley crue. don't get me wrong, i love shout at the devil as much as the next guy, but there are no good songwriters in that band.

Booker T. and the MGs

(wait, 'songwriter' means you compose music, too, not just lyrics, right? oops.)

There are thousands upon thousand of bands that fall into this catagory, and most of them realised and split up as a result.

___ (___), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately not, most of them were signed and made terrible records

Yeah, well that is kind of what I meant. I mean, its not exactly worth me listing "Ged" from my local pub, as no-one knows who they are!

The signing bit was taken as read, I feel. or, I can list 95% of local bands I have seen.

hmmm...virtually any good band who are more sound-based than song-based would fit the bill (personally, i think radiohead were reasonably song-y for at least half their career).

sonic youth

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(wait, i thought the thread title said great bands with no great songwriters - so basically any crap band will do)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus, Three Dog Night is the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread title, too. I think Xgau described them as "interpretive rock." Is anything similar, or even possible, in today's musical climate?

briania (briania), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

DEREK BAILEY IS NOT A BAND.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

for large portions of pink floyd's catalog i get fooled into thinking they fit into this category.

Ride fit this to a T. They were one of those bands where the "sound" was all, ably illustrated when I saw Mark Gardener play Truck festival with Goldrush as his backing band. as might be expected, his set leant heavily on old Ride songs but, shorn of their swirling guitars, and played by adistinctly average bunch of country-rockers, I could only cringe at the dull arrangements and dismal lyrics as I turned away in embarrasment. Contrast with the criminally underrated Magoo, who though they have a "sound" that is equally based on FX and studio trickery, play breath taking acoustic gigs that are quite simply magical.
