Bands that have come from Leeds or the Yorkshire area...

I'm off to Leeds College Of Music next year, and in a desperate attempt to fit in with the locals want to learn a bit about the area's musical history.

After a few nights out there this year the scene seems pretty dead, but after talking to olderer and cleverer friends, I've learnt Leeds has one of the best music scenes in the country, with a strong 'DIY' aesthetic and lots of bands helping each other out. Anyone know anything about venues, whats popular around there, bands that want (ahem) a guitarist?? I've heard there are loads of good punk bands.

So everyone name good stuff to have come out of Leeds that I should get? I know I have to check out Gang Of Four, been meaning to check these out for about 4 years now, what should I buy first?

TomB (TomB), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

MEKONS.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Entertainment! by Gang Of Four. Embrace are from Brighouse/Halifax. Just don't mention Alan Smith anywhere.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the diy scene is all around LS6 rather than in town

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I go to Leeds College Of Music! I hope you hate it slightly less than I do, Tom.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(um, Chumbawamba? am always at loss re. Leeds bands)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

venues: brudenell social club seems to be something of a hub

actually there are a number of smaller nights running in the city centre also, but the main clubs in leeds seem to be running in a permanent 95 hangover state (are they endless mod/soul/britpop nights still casting their shadow there?)

bands: hood, sierpinski, vibracathedral orchestra (i never actually worked out if these were from leeds or not), there was an improv/noise kind of club that they seemed to be involved with, i forgot that damn name

labels: catmobile!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sisters of Mercy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

mark e (mark e), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the north bar, on briggate, is ok place to drink, im in there sometimes (though my visits to leeds have been infrequent for a while, due to hectic schedule:(

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Danielle Dax?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.dkemp.uklinux.net/cnr/

this link is useful for leeds underground events and stuff

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, that site seems to be in a state of flux, oh well, look at it anyway

i notice Mice Parade are playing at carpe diem on 7th june

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Doncaster...

Dude, why do you hate LCM? Tell me, tell me! I had been accedpted to all all the music courses in leeds and just this morning sent off my proper "no going back" confirmation.

I've still got the option to do either music or jazz, so if you could reccommed which one you think is the best.

I've heard people complaining about the amount of theory and stuff, but I don't mind that, the facilities seem way way better than what they've got at leeds uni. I should probably do this in a real email...

TomB (TomB), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeh, I get the cops n robbers newsletter sent to me from a friend up there.

Actually, this could be useful...

I'm moving up to live with my band, we're all going to uni in September, we have a lovely huge PA with a nice monitoring system, 32 channel mixing desk, loads of mics for every purpose. We thought it would be cool (and a hell of a lot easier for us) to store this in a pub\venue that might be interested in doing regular band nights.

So if anyone knows anyone, anything, got any good ideas what the hell we could do with a PA that'll probably fill the house we're moving into then I'd be very grateful!

TomB (TomB), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Soft Cell also started in Leeds...anyway, good luck with the upcoming stuff in Leeds, Tom!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, were Lemon Kittens/Danielle Dax from Leeds? What's she doing now? And is she still hot?!?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Christie!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yowza!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I'm late with these, but...

The Mekons
Gang of Four
Sisters of Mercy
THE WEDDING PRESENT

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really hate it Tom, I am just not hugely pro-Leeds generally. The College is quite great and nice really, I think it is the haircuts and the number of braying people that worry me most. I am a sourpuss, everyone is great really and you will love it so rah rah excellent. Best of luck and everything yes.

I think maybe it is always Soft Cell I intend (and forget) to mention in these Leedsish situations, again it is so, good work Ned.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

as alex is a southyorks man, im guessing he is predisposed to be somewhat anti-leeds;)

i like leeds a lot. and, some days, i even miss it

gareth (gareth), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pale Saints were based in Leeds, but I think they were actually southerners.

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth's refering to The Termite Club upthread. And yep, Vibracathedral are from Leeds. I think Neil Campbell gets involved in putting on a lot of great gigs up there.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Truth! Is No Words!

(also going up to Leeds for uni in September)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I hate it when that happens.

Are not the hip new things Kaiser Chiefs from Leeds too?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You are Swygart? I'd always pictured you as a 50 year old music nut who remembers the good ol days, but loves these hip new times.

TomB (TomB), Friday, 21 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm 20, btw)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bridewell Taxis

holojames (holojames), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Wire who are, judging from the three songs I've heard, really rather good. They're a new band, noisy post-punk - www.blackwire.tk.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Christie!

tony "amarillo" christie?? that would make leeds the coolest place to be from on earth.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Not Leeds, but Conisbrough, in Southern Yorkshire.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And, indeed, few come cooler than Tony Christie. He did what he did for Maria.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Delta 5

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yorkshire's greatest musical son is Jake Thackray, but I'm generally no authority on the area despite being from nearby batley, responsible for black lace and robert palmer. i left leeds four years ago and don't miss it. there seems a permanent background noise about being cooler than manchester. which is probably true with manchester presently willowing in pride about fucking joy division still, and manchester cunting on even more about being cooler than london, and neither having any genuine autonomy form our sodden capital, each of the northern two having a burgeoning electro scene and legions of attractive but slightly stupid girls. this isn't a problem though, im' angry about other things at the moment.

the kaiser chiefs are new and, most likely, shit.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I overheard two punked-out looking dudes talking about Delta 5 in Kim's last night.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

but the main clubs in leeds seem to be running in a permanent 95 hangover state

But isn't that the case in every town/small city with an 'indie' club?
The one here hasn't changed for the last 10 years.

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Delta 5 CD coming soon through Kill Rock Stars. None of the Pre stuff but all of the Rough Trade stuff.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Christie is from Conisbrough? really?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jake Thackray, aye. His music is wonderful, from the EMI compilation I have; I ought to check more of it out. Hood are from the Leeds area; "Cold House" is a very good album indeed.

Derek Bailey, Pulp, ABC, Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Autechre all hail from Sheffield.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheffield does tend to kind of piss all over Leeds quite a lot in this whole department, they have that whole joyous magnificent spikey silvery unity aesthetic and Warp-ish sensibilities and the glorious aborted National Centre For Popular Music and suchlike. The supersoaraway SheffieldPopHeritage allows you to paper over the big gaping cracks in Sheffield's general desolateness and like it better as a place, which is quite good.

Doncaster gave the world Groop Dogdrill possibly and also Honky and Lesley Garrett so less auspicious really.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Anathema were all famously from Yorkshire. Decomposed were too, I believe.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Spacehog!

chocolatepiekid (chocolatepiekid), Friday, 21 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Skip read this one - so if they've already been mentioned then sorry!, but Wedding Present were Leeds. Talking of Sheffield aswell Baby Bird were from there.

Dean Birkett (Fynci), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a Hood cd coming out this year?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry have reformed:
http://www.red-lorry-yellow-lorry.com/rlyl2004.htm

[next season Leeds will be the largest city in Europe without a top flight football club, correct?]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a Hood cd coming out this year?

"the new hood album is nearly finished - we'll have more details on this very soon."

http://www.hoodmusic.net/index2.html

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea DJ - but this surely has to be the first season that a Yorkshire club isn't in the top flight?

Dean Birkett (Fynci), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Autechre started in Rochdale not Sheffield !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a wonderful thread. Gang Of Four, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Sisters, Danielle Dax, Weddoes. Jesus, it sounds great. Thanks for the Danielle Dax pic, too.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 22 May 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Cud, surely

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Saturday, 22 May 2004 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Leeds definitely has the best mailorder around

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Saturday, 22 May 2004 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

50,000 bloody students in Leeds and they're all standing between me and the bar. Stop enjoying yourselves, y'bastards. This is Yorkshire. Dour should be your watchword.

Good current Leeds bands not mentioned so far: Bilge Pump; Claire Broadley aka Printed Circuit; Randomnumber (if he counts separately from Hood).

Labels: Obscene Baby Auction; the aforementioned Catmobile; Wrath

More stuff at leedsmusicscene

chris j (chris j), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i think random number is better than hood anyway (but then, i would say that)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Cud, surely

I haven't listened to Asquarius in a while and I will take care of that right now! It's great summer music.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hot Chocolate cover! Lotta love for the Cud over here.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rich and Strange" is as great as I remember it. And the Leeds connection is furthered because Jon Langford produced the album!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, I have now started a Cud thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

[next season Leeds will be the largest city in Europe without a top flight football club, correct?]

No idea DJ - but this surely has to be the first season that a Yorkshire club isn't in the top flight?

Sheffield's actually marginally bigger than Leeds...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not mentioned so far: Rose of Avalanche, Coping Saw, Drug Free America, MDMA.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sheffield isn't bigger than leeds. that stands to reason. it is, however, cooler.

matthew james (matthew james), Saturday, 22 May 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a band on Bloomington punk label plan i t x who I pal around with called Dauntless Elite who are from LEEDS ENGLAND which is impressive in middle america. I saw their show and it was really good even though I'm not so much a punk

sonny!!!!!!!!, Sunday, 23 May 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Anybody read I'll Go To T'Foot Of Our Stage - The Story Of Yorkshire Pop Music?
