This is the thread about MYLO

Prompted by discovering his album review in the Observer Music Monthly (opening para hailing it easily the equal of Melody AM or Since I Left You left a bad taste in my mouth (Melody AM? FUCK OFF). But that could just be the medication).

Anyway, great singles artist and a decent remixer, so I'm excited. Ronan etc, any thoughts?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"YOUR NEW FAVOURITE SOFA ALBUM"?! Emma Warren, you are headed straight for hell on a skateboard. God help you if you review Cut Copy or something.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

played it through a couple of times now and i just can't get into it. it seems too novelty for me. the vibe is too laid back. the vocal samples sit uncomfortably. i really loved wolves of miami but this album, like so many dance albums, frankly disappoints.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Love Drop the Pressure. Not sure about the other tracks.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 May 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

His EP collection could have made a special purchase (if it was real).

Hey, this is great! Okay, the album clearly doesn't have an original bone in its body but its still one of the most purely enjoyable records I've heard in a while... it starts slowly with the first couple of tracks and I never listen to the last three but there's still this awesome seven sequence, from Drop The Pressure onwards, where everything sounds like a single. Which is what I want from a dance album really, none of this guest vocalist-proper song rubbish.

Anyone comparing it to Melody AM needs a slap.

Ha, Matt, that's because over half the album's taken from his singles and EPs! He is getting a remarkable amount of props, there are half a dozen superlatives stuck on the front of the cover. Glad 'Drop The Pressure' is getting nods, the self-conscious 20-something hipster student cunts I played it to last year weren't biting.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

they covered Capricorn's 'I Need Love' in their live set! this blew my mind as i only discovered that early 80s italo track late last year and it's great (and frighteningly contemporary-sounding).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

who i wonder is puttin in all the ££££££££££ for the literally countless posters i see all over manchester?

still, good on him. *everyone* loves the bit where 'drop the pressure' goes
'motherf-ckers,motherf-ckers,motherf-ckers,motherf-ckers'

piscesboy, Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the vocal samples sit uncomfortably

i agree so much with this

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's... immediate, isn't it? Which can be fine. To this end, I'm currently playing it to death and enjoying it immensely, whilst knowing full well that I'll be sick of it by the end of the summer.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a summer album though, makes sense

'Valley Of The Dolls' is TOTALLY Royksopp tho, perhaps intentionally - i like it

i'm really all about 'Musclecars' tho, heard it that night Derrick Carter played at The End but only just ID'd it - brilliant

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Drop The Pressure"'s pretty fun, but haven't heard the album. I think he's coming to NZ soonish - is he any good live?

etc, Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you keep him in NZ, please?

___ (___), Monday, 6 September 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

'Wolves of Miami' is so gorgeous.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The 'Paris 400' EP cuts ('Drop TP', 'Paris 400', 'Peach Melba' and 'Otto's Journey') are really wonderful. 'Muscle Cars' is wunderbar also, but my fave is certainly 'Wolves'.

Sean Bateman (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

so has anyone heard his remix of annie's chewing gum yet? any thoughts?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have. It's good. Stripped down and more dancefloor friendly, but he's had the sense to keep the vocal intact, so it's still just as catchy.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats Wolves Of Miami and where can I get it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Myke - he really doesn't do that much with it, more's the wiser!

___ (___), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Wolves of Miami is older 12"? I got it off p2p when this thread started. It's one of those perfect mantra like house things that washes all over your brain, preferably at 5am in the morning.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm.. 'mantra' is the wrong word. What am I looking for?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"looping"

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"revolving"

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess. I was hoping for something more poetic.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

A noun.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

bangalter

the mylo annie remix is nice. it doesn't do much more than make it a house track but then there probably was alot of potential for blundering that task.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"enveloping"

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone told me the album is crap. Is it worth getting if I don't have access to these fancy ep fandangles?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it is, more or less, partly because most of the EPs made it and also because I just listened to 'Valley Of The Dolls' and decided he can do fairly good approximations of 'Etoh'-style beat lushers.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it's ok.....drop the pressure is only a great idea craply sequenced and executed anyway. erol's re-edit owns.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Where did your love go?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't do much more than make it a house track

Don't say this Ronan, I've already had to fight to get it on to my reviews page, the last thing I want is the house reveiwers stealing it. (Are you on AIM right now? And have you changed your mobile number? I was trying to call you yesterday, but I just got dead phone noises.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Review the original and mention the remix.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Original decreed "too pop" from on high.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I still have the same phone, hmm, maybe I was at work or something, the reception is rubbish. if you want to mail me I use this address.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on AIM now, at 11.52, for the next 8 minutes too!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The same "on high" who allowed an RX interview last December? Who approved reviews of past RX and Annie releases? Man. Times they are...

Marianna and I discussed this in the pub. We concluded that it is a fantastic album and you are all ponces.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally heard this whole thing while shopping at Virgin - it is *excellent*!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

this isn't winning polls because "it's the only dance music album people heard this year" or any bollocks like that, it's winning polls because the way the whole thing builds and swirls into those last two tracks is amazing and beautiful.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this guy I work with who sounds exactly like Danny Bonaduce recommended them to me. I will now investigate after reading this thread.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

there's still this awesome seven sequence, from Drop The Pressure onwards, where everything sounds like a single

Completely OTM there. I love the way how I generally pick up on acts like this six months after the buzz when the album's on sale for cheap as it's been out for ages.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It still irks me that there are a few nasty sounding mistakes on this album, like jarring notes and stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 2 January 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He's at Rothko on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure I'll go, but I'm skeptical because A)he's appearing with a "full band" and B)Rothko is The Worst.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

'full band'?! that can only be bad news.

also it costs $12 ($15 at the door!)...gah!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

According to flavorpill, he's DJing at the Maritime Hotel after the Rothko show.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

he's the worst dj on planet earth

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

though he probably plays some nice electro-house, amidst some crap.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

in fact, bobby skafish (below) is actually the worst dj on planet earth.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, oh well, it's free.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

he's playing (i assume djing) here on saturday w/tiefschwarz. so he's a really bad dj then? should i not go?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

He's been doing the live band thing since Glasto at least - it works much better than you'd expect, especially tunes like Paris 500 that sound much beefier than on the record.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

so he's a really bad dj then? should i not go?

Forget about Mylo. Tiefschwarz! Go!

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

please Mr Mylo, release the Capricorn cover in some form if you haven't already

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yes s1ocki go for tiefschwarz!! you'd be insane to not miss that! i wish the schwarz brothers were playing here instead of mylo...

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i cant decide whether to see mylo live or the go team instead, on wednesday

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll go to the dj set afterwards - he's playing with cat. but the drinks there are yikes expensive. and the minimum credit card tab is $50!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd pick Mylo over the Go Team but it really depends what you're in the mood for on the night - they're about equal in live quality (quite good).

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish the schwarz brothers were playing here instead of mylo...

Miami, Toronto and Montreal next weekend. North-America represent...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

is tiefschwarz jewish?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ronan's first post to this thread is otm.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah yeah and vocal samples = annoying

and what's with the "bette davis eyes" rip on "in my arms"? thoughts on that?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

he's the worst dj on planet earth

ooh yeah, he wasn't such a great dj. played some nice songs, but yikes the mixing. he cute though.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

he played here before and the people who booked him were like "yeaaah that's ok now" after 5 or 6 songs.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha ouch

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

promoters should use "the cane" when that happens

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to remember things stopping for an awfully long time during his set at the Red Bull tent at Glastonbury last year. I enjoyed it though. I think he played 'Timecode', or maybe that was someone else. Ah, Glastonbury.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and what's with the "bette davis eyes" rip on "in my arms"? thoughts on that?

Isn't the vocal sampled from "Waiting For A Star To Fall" ? Either way it's the only other worthwhile song on the album besides "Drop The Pressure." His Moby remix is actually pretty enjoyable too, like French house by way of Kerrier District.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember he played a song (the creeps - steve bug remix) that the other dj played 30 mins before. also, he played drop the pressure. and the knife "heartbeats" - but not the rex the dog remix. possibly the worst mixing ive heard in my life. the bravery were in the booth next to ours and they didn't seem impressed either. i liked mylo's ass though. nice and juicy.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up seeing a friend DJ instead who did play the Rex The Dog mix of "Heartbeats", so I'm not so upset I missed it.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

where?

hiro was kinda a weird place to have mylo DJ since most of the crowd there was typical meatpacking district banker/ho types. and the sound system there sucks.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It was just a small thing at R1F1F1.

Apparently Mylo and Cut Copy are now touring the UK together, which is definitely worth $15.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I met Alba after that Mylo set, I had seen Erol Alkan. Alba's eyes were like giant moons.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

MYLO FORCED TO CANCEL U.S. TOUR

Mylo has been forced to cancel his forthcoming dates in the U.S. due to a hearing condition.

Having contracted a virus over the Christmas period which has caused him temporary hearing loss, Mylo had been advised to cancel live shows in Japan and Australia at the start of the year. He had hoped that his condition would recover sufficiently to allow him to perform live shows in the U.S., unfortunately his recovery is very slow and no real progress has been made. As he has been recommended to completely recover he has been advised by his doctor not to commit to anything further at least until the end of February. Mylo deeply regrets having to cancel the dates.

However, even though Mylo will not be able to tour the U.S. as planned, his new release Destroy Rock & Roll will be available in the States on February 7th.
