GUITARISTS... an info page for the ignorants...

Alright, I know that everyone on this bitch who plays basically has the CHORDS issue of the Guitar Grimoire completely memorized except for my slack ass. Since my ax lessons got cut off 2 years into it (heh, back in 95) I've basically had to create all my masterpeices using majors, minors, 7ths and power 5ths. I got a few "9 Jillion Chords For Guitar" books, but lets face it, I'm lazy and my inspirato fades quickly, too quickly for me to try and flip through 400 pages of chord charts to find out what chord I made by mangling my fingers in a new way on the fretboard. Thus, my idea:

Someone should make a website that is basically a blank chord chart (you've all seen'em, the 6-vertical by X-horizontal line grid that folks put down filled and hollow circles denoting the root/other notes for the chord on it) where you can just click (regular note) and double click (root if you know, note you'd want the bassist to play if you were guessing) on various parts of the grid and VOILA! it would tell you what chord you came up with.

That way when an idiot like myself was trying to teach a song I wrote to the other guitarist I could say something other than "Alright, it goes: B, A-minor, weird chord, E-minor, weird chord"

You get what I'm saying?

Actually, this one might be more to your liking "Helltime", if that is your real name.

Helltime, Friday, 21 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How about you buy some shit for me on Amazon?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I see your point, but where's the bonding in that?

Helltime, Friday, 21 May 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Helltime, are you new or have I just missed you here before?

If you're new, welcome.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If you know the notes that make up each chord that you're playing and have a little knowledge of theory (specifically naming chords based on the notes contained within them), that's all you really need for explaining your songs.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 21 May 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No, martin m., not new, I've been posting here ever since the pre-Alley-dating Tombot Millar (see, 2 major poseter to ILX references) showed me this board in Nov or Dec of 2002, right after the inlaws bought me this here shweet 'puter. I just only post every once in a while now because now my wife has more college night courses to go to so I have more time to look at silicon tits on the web.

I used to always be "Helltime Producto", but since a virus fucked me up and I had to reformat my harddrive, I've just been using variations of "Helltime" because the ZoneAlarm fucks with me every time I try and log in, and then again every time I post or look at a page after I log in.

Anyhows, that's for the welcome, I'm glad and honored that folks around here still accept/get a kick out of my fat-guy-who-just-got-out-of-the-military-and-is-persuing-a-career-in-alcoholic-asshole kinda wit.

If you show up at said Ween show with said beanie, I'll buy YOU 3 beers, Martin. Word is bond.

Curt1ss ,

Man, I don't wanna be like, "Okay dude, the verse goes like, A-minor, Gee, See, then that chord that's like E,C,F,G,A,B (I know, that's one fuckin nonsensical chord)"

Helltime, Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's more punk rock just to write everything with minors, majors and 5ths anyway.

Fuck all those crazy jazz chords.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, punk rock. You can only do punk rock for so long, and I did it for SOOOO LOOOONNNNNNGG.

(Don't get me wrong, I still keep Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Ramones, Fear, Black Flag and Dead Kennedys in rotation here.., I just felt the need to branch out. A two month Parliament Funkadelic kick will do that to ya.)

You guitar picker dudes should add posts to this thread-

Strange Chord Progressions You Have Known And Loved

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheheh... I'm talking out of my ass about the punk rock.

I've done the whole music theory on guitar thing... It's not really as necessary as it seems. I mean I can't remember the last time I played in a band where everyone knew what an 11th chord was anyway.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I don't wanna be like, "Okay dude, the verse goes like, A-minor, Gee, See, then that chord that's like E,C,F,G,A,B (I know, that's one fuckin nonsensical chord)"

BUT you could say "Emadd11(b9b13)." Not that that would be a very pretty chord (nor one that the guitarist would readily know how to voice). But what I was saying was that these chords DO have names.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I see your point, but where's the bonding in that?

Bonding, huh? A novel concept... but ultimately too human an endeavor.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, King Kobra, post a mailing address and I'll have Amazon send you the Burzum or Gorgorath album of my choice, deal?
