jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, this makes me think of my fave prog rockers Van der Graaf Generator (and some Hammill songs) -- the songs were long and quite unusually structured (cf : abacab)
and the songs would often have a point
where it seemed as if they'd ended, often very convincingly if maybe leaving you hanging, yet which would usually simply be the wind-up for PART TWO, the rock-out variations section (3rd, 4th & sometimes 5th gear -- they played for "top gear" quite often)

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

MF Doom - "Rhymes Like Dimes" (We tricked you!)

Maciej, Monday, 24 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, how does "Good Vibrations" have a fake ending?

The "aaaaaaaaaaaaah!" harmony right after the "Gotta keep those lovegood vibrations are happenin' with her" bit (or whatever the hell the lyrics are).

Ultravox! - Rockwrok (actually has TWO false endings IIRC)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 24 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Which sort of reminds me:

Kraftwerk: Ruckzeug has any number of false endings (0 to 2) depending on which album/CD you are playing (Suck it and see sampler has none, 2LP has two, Exceller 8 has one I think, and the bootleggy CD has one i think...)

Wire - "Field Day for the Sundays" is the quintessential answer to this thread. Any review I read of Pink Flag talks about it has all these false endings even though the song's only thirty-some seconds long.
