In the High Llama's cover of Frankly Mr. Shankly he says them so clearly and confidently you can just tell he loves them. And that's fine by me, they're great lyrics and it's a great cover.

Every hip hop track ever.

Kelly Jones to thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 22 May 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite their inarguably clunky crapness, it always struck me that Sting sounded quite pleased with his lyrics.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Morrissey, Morrissey, Morrissey.

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Saturday, 22 May 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything by Nick Cave.

You're the Wish You Are I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 22 May 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Devoto on 'Song From Under The Floorboards'.

Fergal (Ferg), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I'll second that Devoto.

"Despite their inarguably clunky crapness, it always struck me that Sting sounded quite pleased with his lyrics."

He's pleased with everything about himself. He probably thinks his performance in Dune was "misunderstood".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, for all I hear about Sting being an egomaniac... where are you guys getting this? Is he this way in interviews? Is this what his autobiography is like?

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever actually read a Sting interview?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark E. Smith in the Fall, and deservedly so.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever actually read a Sting interview?
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), May 22nd, 2004.

Why would I do a thing like that?

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I love her, but it's pretty clear Joni M loves herself for her lyrics

%90 of Gift of Gab's output to date.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 22 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

50 Cent on ''21 Questions'. (ft. Nate Dogg, though he doesn't sound any more impressed than he usually does.)

Tori Amos

Mark M, Sunday, 23 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

TMBG are often more than a little too impressed with their own lyrics, I think.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Westerberg has had a consistent tendency to repeat especially clever lyrics, and they seem to be repeated only for the purpose of making sure the listener catches on to his cleverness.

I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. I often need to hear a song a few times to catch on to how bright and witty a songwriter is, but with him, I only need hear it once.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Courtney Love seems rather convinced that her lyrics are gold, when in actuality....like everything else about her....they're overwrougt shit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Peart (Rush) is so proud of his lyrics that he doesn't even sing 'em.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that's a weird way to look at it. Geddy is the Leo...maybe Neal just doesn't want to play and sing a the same time.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 24 May 2004 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 24 May 2004 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

george michael's 'praying for time' owns thread. chris roberts memorably slagged it in the mm in '90 and for this very reason (among others actually) check that whispered delivery on 'and charity is a coat you wear/twice a year'. i love the album but hate thois song. even the closing guitar strums are pleased with themselves.

'fredom 90' however - one of the best songs ever written, so swings/roundabouts etc.

piscesboy, Monday, 24 May 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That very long version of "If the kids are united" which was a free 12" single with the "Hersham boys"? album

"Kids with feelings, like you and me!" (repeat for three hours)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 May 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Only an idiot like Jimmy Pursey could be possibly be proud of lyrics as idiotic as Jimmy Pursey's!

"For once in my life I've got something to say
I wanna say it now for now is today
A love has been given so why not enjoy
So let's all grab and let's all enjoy

If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided

Just take a look around you
What do you see
Kids with feelings like you and me
Understand him, he'll understand you
For you are him, and he is you

If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided

I don't want to be rejected
I don't want to be denied
Then its not my misfortune
That I've opened up your eyes

Freedom is given
Speak how you feel
I have no freedom
How do you feel
They can lie to my face
But not to my heart
If we all stand together
It will just be the start

If the kids are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids are united then we'll never be divided"

Lyrics so inane they'd make Bryan Adams cringe! A retarded four-year-old given a rhyming dictionary for 10 minutes could do better.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 24 May 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 May 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Monday, 24 May 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

cw28 (cw28), Monday, 24 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This far in the thread and no Stevie Malkmus?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Malkmus, no question.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, at least most of the lyrics mentioned so far make some kind of sense! Malkmus be nonsequitoring!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 May 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Greg Dulli to thread

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 24 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my list, and this applies to their work in general:
Ani DiFranco
Stuart Murdoch
David Byrne
Jello Biafra
Roger Waters
Lou Reed
Stephin Merritt
Leonard Cohen
Randy Newman
Wayne Coyne
David Bowie
Peter Gabriel
I'm not hating here, most (but definitely not all) of these people have every right to sound proud IMO.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Bern

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

We are all listing people now even though the question is about songs.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I find that a lot of singers who get that smug "gee I'm a good lyricist" timbre to their voice will pretty much have it all the time.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I add Nicky Wire for mouthing every single crappy lyric to a MSP song ever, despite not being the singer. No?

___ (___), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Mclean sounded proud when he announced his induction into the songwriter's hall of fame when I say him in concert some months ago.

U2, "One." Which I think has pretty good lyrics, actually.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I add Nicky Wire for mouthing every single crappy lyric to a MSP song ever, despite not being the singer. No?

can I agree with that? The resentment I feel when singing along to "South Yorkshire Mass Murderer" despite myself is amazing
