what do you think of this band? where is the best place to start?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

for me it was soulseek and then go from there.

doomie x, Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I would recomend the album Lino Hi as a good starting point.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What was my starting point? *thinks, looks at CDs* Lino Hi is definitely worth it, I also like Versatile Arab Chord Chart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

also has anyone been to the termite club in leeds? each time i am up there it clashes with somethign else, and i have never been

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

just buy anything, it's pretty much all good. if you can find the "filling sacks with coloured scraps/falling free you and me" 10" that's my favorite. "my gate's open," "mothing," "their spines crumble for a hug," "versatile arab," i've heard nothing that wasn't great. see them live. buy a t-shirt. get their name carved into your back.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 22 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second 'their spines crumble...' and also suggest the split CD with Sunroof! from their recent american tour. vibracathdral gives standard issue drone & shimmer, and sunroof does all sorts of weird cut up electronics/drones/guitars/weirdness. greatness.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 22 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Versatile Arab Chord Chart and Dabbling With Gravity And Who You Are would be splendid starting points. You really can't go wrong with anything VCO, though, as others have pointed out.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 22 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth- they are playing on may 31st.

gigs may'04

Termite club has all those drone things going on but also quite a bit of free improvisation scene is there. My descension CD (great free improv group, and one of my fave CDs) was recorded there. love to go one day.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

are you going julio?

im coming back from leeds that day i think. im up for going though, i should be back in time

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 22 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

cool you'll be able to make it. I'm def going.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

They were one of my highlights at ATP this year - I got temporarily annoyed by the guy filming their set who came and stood right in front of me, until I realised it was Lee Ranaldo and then I was all like, please stand on my feet if it makes yr view any better Mr Ranaldo sir.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave is OTM.

That 10" is out of print, but one of the tracks is available, unedited, on a VO CDr (can't remember which, sorry), & the other side is on a CDr that Julian Bradley was selling last year.

Wandering Boy Poet, Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the unedited track is on "mothing."

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 22 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

man, i love vibracathedral fanboys bcz i know they're just like me except european. ♥

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like this band a lot... my gate's open is great,as is hex hostess & the last 3 studio records. versatile was my intro. I need to digimatize a nice minidisc recording I made of their most recent brooklyn show,...

autovac (autovac), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

autovac - the show at free103 w/ Sunroof? If you make a copy, hook it up! That was the first time I saw Vibracathedral & Sunroof, though I saw Sunroof later at tonic.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

how about that split they did with JOMF? textile released it. "baptism-bar-blue" is by far my favorite vibra track. i think its their most "rock" piece to date.

brock (brock), Sunday, 23 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

and live they are fucking barbarians. tequilla slugging barbarians.

brock (brock), Sunday, 23 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: drone rock psychedelia trainspottery vs. references to star wars trainspottery???

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

drone rock, dude: no ewoks.

sexyDancer, Sunday, 23 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty pleasantly surprised that gareth started this thread. Definitely the most open-minded and non-judgemental ILM poster.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 May 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to hear more Astral Social Club.
I could use some more Vibracathedral, too.
I think the last thing I picked up was a 7".

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

i like copse, mothing and the wings over america split w/sunroof!

yesssss

am0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

actually i revived this partially because their website hasn't been updated for a long time. wondering if they are on hiatus or broke up or what. last i heard neil campbell split to focus on astral social club and matthew bower was joining the group.

am0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno if they've split, but I think they've been without Neil Campbell for a while. There's a recent interview with him where he suggested that he thought VCO had settled into doing the same old thing.

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 24 July 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

Queen of Guess and Wisdom Thunderbolt both sound pretty good to me. Especially this song on Thunderbolt that goes from the opening riff of "Sway" into a drone rock jam. I think this must be the one with Pete Nolan playing the drums, cuz it doesn't sound like any other VCO jam I've heard. I can understand the notion that VCO have "settled," but that's always seemed like the point of it.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Queen of Guess was the first album I got, and I think Goodnight Stars, Goodnight Air (last track) is still my favourite track. The album cover was from a tattoo, if I remember correctly...

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

Great band

admrl, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Good to see Neil Campbell back in the fold, shame there's no Bower involvement
