what no Big Bad Voodoo Daddy?

harshaw (jube), Sunday, 23 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

All suitable for becoming coasters, apart from Tom Waits and bits of Screamadelica

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Questionable? What don't you all like about these albums? I haven't heard all of them yet, but they're all regarded as classics (apart from the Blood Brothers) and the couple I have heard (Alien Lanes, Controversy, and especially Third/Sister Lovers) are great.

Robert Hell, Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking shit! Replace the word "questionable" in my last post with "coasters." Not sure how I got those mixed up.

Robert Hell, Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that Big Star album. It's not as great as some people would have one believe, but it's still really gorgeous in a sort of brittle way (also the fact that it was unreleased for so long gave it that unrecognized genius cache.) Controversy is good too, even if it is overshadowed by the albums that bookend it. I haven't heard Screamadelica in ages and I don't remember that Tom Waits album.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The rest are band I have nothing much good to say about.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 23 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If You're Feeling Sinister is one of my favorite CDs ever made

Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers
masterpiece, start to finish - A+

Blood Brothers - March On Electric Children
dogshit

Guided by Voices - Alien Lanes
masterpiece, A+

Primal Scream - Screamadelica
overrated, lyrically dogshit - C

Tom Waits - Small Change
haven't heard it

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right roger, Bobby Gillespie is a crap lyricist. Well, that's the case against Primal Scream made, then.

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Rubbish

Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers
Pretty good

Blood Brothers - March On Electric Children
Well, I quite like it

Guided by Voices - Alien Lanes
Crap

Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Pretty good

Prince - Controversy
Ronnie Talk To Russia! Great but deeply flawed, really

Tom Waits - Small Change
Pretty good

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

7/10

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I totally love that B&S album, it's the only one I do!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The B&S album has the title track, which is still somewhat redeeming. The rest is pretty forgetable though. 6/10

Alien Lanes may as well be any other home made GBV album, right? It's nice I guess, but if you've got Propeller or Bee Thousand or whatever, you're fine. 5.5/10

The Tom Waits and Prince albums have their moments, but are really fan only type material. 3/10

Screamadelica is a classic, obv. 10/10

The rest, meh.

minolta (minolta), Sunday, 23 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The GBV and B&S albums are decent, but very rarely am I in the mood to listen to them, and even when I am it's only for a few songs.

The Big Star is classic, but again I hardly ever listen to it, except when I feel self loathy. Small Change is very good too (if only for the Piano Has Been Drinking) but Tom Waits has much better albums.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 24 May 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers is, at the very least(!), among the great albums of well, ever. i generally have issues with all rest of 'em, but not that one.

duke personally, Monday, 24 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious, what CONNECTS all these albums? This question seems almost non-sensical in its randomnous.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

They all get Magnet lurve?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: B+S, Big Star, Blood Brothers, Prince

"I'm curious, what CONNECTS all these albums? This question seems almost non-sensical in its randomnous."

Maybe he currently has them in his Amazon cart and is having second thoughts?

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
fuck the haters, I'll give it an 8/10 out of spite - the LLPJ eps and the This is Just A Modern Rock Song ep I like better though....

Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers
my fav big star 9/10, a couple weak tracks dock it a point.

Blood Brothers - March On Electric Children
?/10 don't have this one

Guided by Voices - Alien Lanes
used to be my fav band, 9/10. I prefer Bee Thousand to it slightly, that's a 10 for me.

Primal Scream - Screamadelica
?/10 never really got into them....

Prince - Controversy
?/10 one of the only eighties Prince CDs I've never owned

Tom Waits - Small Change
8/10 probably my fav 70's Waits. Bone Machine is a 10 to me, an all time favorite...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister 9/10
I'm with AaronHZ on this one, why the backlash against B&S? Not original by any means, but a worthwhile genre exercise with great lyrics.

Big Star - Sister Lovers 7.5/10
Most of it pretty damn great, especially "Jesus Christ", "Thank You Friends", and "Holocaust."

Blood Brothers - March on Electric Children
do not own

Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes 7.5/10
Not as good as Bee Thousand, but worth it for "My Valuable Hunting Knife" alone.

Primal Scream - Screamadelica 5/10
A few great singles: "Higher Than The Sun", "Come Together" etc. Not really cohesive as an album.

Prince - Controversy 6/10
Love "Do Me Baby", "Annie Christian" and the title track, but again not a cohesive album.

Tom Waits - Small Change
do not own, but got love for Swordfishtrombones and Frank's Wild Years

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one I have is the Belle and Sebastian one, which I will give 7.5/10.
